It's so aggravating that so many people are overlooking the Trails in the Sky remake announcement because it only got 10 seconds of footage as part of the sizzle reel. This is the perfect jumping on point for anyone that's been curious about the series, or are just fans of JRPGs. The world building, character writing, and narrative are insanely detailed, to the point where nearly every NPC has their own detailed narrative happening in parallel to the main plot.

Cant wait to snag a physical of the Plucky Squire when that comes available

I remember where I was, but only because I was an adult at the time. Unlike you, Brain, I wasn't a Nintendo fan. I never owned a NES in my life. My sister bought one for her daughter, but I rarely played it. I had the first Sega Master System, and yes, there was a US release, though it didn't have a whole lot of games. When the Genesis release; I ran out to bought one. I was still living in California, very near the Huntington Beach Mall, where I worked. This console was very important to me, as it helped to shape my Console video game life from that point forward.

I have very fond memories of both the GBC and GBA. Some of my favorite games of all time were on those handheld systems.

Trails is a really slow burn type of game, so I'd recommended playing it alongside something else and just take it at your own pace. Trails mechanics really haven't changed all that drastically over the years. Daybreak really is the biggest departure gameplay-wise. For being turn based RPGs, I think they've aged rather well considering the first one came out in 2004. personally speaking, the Sky games are still some of my favorites, whereas the Cold Steel games (the first two specifically) I think have aged the worst given that those were the first games to move to full 3D, and the series experienced some growing pains during that period. They got getter with 3 and 4, but I'd say Reverie is where falcom really figured out how to do Trails in 3D The story order goes: Liberl arc 1. Trails in the Sky 2. Sky SC (Second Chapter) 3. Sky 3rd Crossbell arc 4. Trails from Zero 5. Trails to Azure Erobonia arc 6. Trails of Cold Steel 7. Cold Steel 2 8. Cold Steel 3 9. Cold Steel 4 10. Trails into Reverie Calvard arc 11. Trails through Daybreak 12. Daybreak 2 There is an overarching story that continues through the whole series, but you can pretty much start at the start of any story arc, since each arc contains a mostly self contained story as well, but obviously, starting from the beginning is ideal because the later games are always referencing stuff from earlier games, and there's character cameos and stuff. and just to dive a bit deeper, I can tell you what platforms they're all available on, and the best platform to enjoy each game on and why Sky/Sky SC - best on PC. also on PSP -The PC version includes higher quality assets as well as an updated translation via a patch that came several years after release in order to keep names, terms, and lore consistent with later games in the series Sky 3rd - only available on PC Zero/Azure - best on PC, Switch. also on PS4 - The PC and Switch ports were developed by PH3 (lead by famed PC game modder Durante) and include several QoL option, additional graphics options, and much cleaner looking textures and are just definitely the better versions Cold Steel 1+2 - best on PS4 (except on PS5 through backwards compatibility), PC (not required but I recommend using the SenPatcher mod with it). also on Vita, PS3 - The PC and PS4 versions have better performance and look better while also adding over 5000 additional voiced lines each. There are a few bugs running the PS4 games on PS5, and PC has a few missing sfx, but SenPatcher, which is an extremely easy to use fan patch, fixes a lot of small issues with the game Cold Steel 3+4/Reverie - best on PS4, PS5, PC. also on Switch - not much to say here other than the games struggle a bit on Switch Daybreak - PS4, PS5, PC, Switch - I've not heard too many issues with this one on any platforms. surprisingly stable on Switch (though obviously at the cost of graphic fidelity)

Just curious, you've mentioned you are from PA, as a PA resident myself, where about are you originally from?

Turns out if you don't have NSO then Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition is just the 2 main modes you are able to play. Also I read on Reddit that some people are saying that the main reason for games missing is due to the hoop and loops Nintendo would have to do with the rights along with getting those individuals to agree to them for cutting and editing different segments in those games.

I'm gonna start with Trails through daybreak and just got caught up storywise via YT videos. Trails through daybreak starts a new story arc so most people are saying you can start there.

Fantastic show as always! One overlooked first party game that came out this year (Jan), given its niche status, is Another Code Recollection, my goty so far. A fantastic remake of 2 adventure games from the ds/wii era.
