The real last Samurai were the Tokugawa loyalists inc the Army and Navy who took possession of Hokkaido and formed a democratic government with an elected President Enomoto Takeaki, one of their core programs was preserving Samuai culture as well as modernizing . This happened in September 1868, the rebel colony .made their headquarters in Goryokaku the star shaped fortress built by the French in 1865 . In March 1869 the Meiji army sailed to confront them . The defense was led by people like Hijikata Toshizo and what was left of the Shinsengumi and Iba Hachiro . On June 28th the rebel government surrendered after huge casualties inc Hijikata and Iba . This was the official end of the Samurai and the last battle of the Samurai era . There were other rebellions over the next 10 years but this eas the biggest . Many of the samurai ended up in the army or police after 1-3 years in prison .
