November 4th - 2024 Final inspections - Winter is coming!
November 4th Final Inspection, getting the bees ready for winter, candy boards and quilt boxes to be put on later this month.
Note: Nothing was execpted to be done here other than "balance" the hives and get the entrance reducers on the healthy hives. The weather spiked to 70 degrees after being below 50s the previous 5 days. The girls were aggressive here MAINLY because it's super late in the season.

October 22nd - Weak Hive (Hive #3) Inspection
Просмотров 621 день назад
We decided to do an inspection at 2 weeks of the weak hive that was hit by a bear 2 weeks ago. I'm super worried about this hive going into winter, but we're going to check in on this hive this week. Come join us, we do get to see the queen. There is SOME brood, but they aren't eating the liquid feed. The bees are finding pollen somewhere, but it's going to be a REAL struggle this winter. Which...
October 6th full inspections - 2 STRONG hive inspections, the bees are preparing for winter.
Просмотров 753Месяц назад
I've started raising bees. This is my journey. This past week we saw our weakest hive get ravaged by a raccoon or a bear. We're still not sure. But this weekend we inspected the two strong hives. Spicy First and then the hive with the MOST strength we've seen out of the 2 years of our journey. We didn't get to see spicy queen but we saw some larvae. We did get to see the middle hive's queen @53...

October 2nd - I don't want to... bee... here talking about this

So this video was supposed to be a joyous one, talking about how the colony accepted the queen that we installed on 9/22... but it looks like we had an intruder. And it's not looking good for the long term health of Hive 3. Check out the video for what happened last night.
September 22nd - Requeening Hive #3 (verifying one last time no queen)
Просмотров 776Месяц назад
So we had to requeen hive 3. We could not find the queen in the previous 2 inspections... We'll check back in a week but here's our placement into the hive. NOTE: Not sure why the filming stopped at some point after placing the queen (but nothing of not really happened here) then we resumed filming once noticed.

I took my Tail Air on a vacation and to the Grand Canyon on a selfie stick. The Tail Air captured the canyon during the Golden Hour and the footage was amazing. I've removed the onboard mic audio and replaced it with some music, because the Canyon was/is always super windy and without a mic muffler, it's audio was loud. So enjoy this use case of the Canyon as it will show you what it can do whi...

Obsbot video that starts at 8:30 (filming starts about 15 minutes after Sunset) The Tail Air was in near darkness by the time we reached the Lincoln memorial and fireworks began. The "low light" capture of the TailAir was amazing. I was even able to follow with my remote a plane rather easily. This is amazing and I can't wait to see where the OBSBOT team goes next.

07-28-2024 Hive Inspections - Only 2 Hives (3rd Hive was done on 8/11)
Просмотров 922 месяца назад
We got back from vacation and decided to check on the girls. We realized pretty quick they were honey bound, and pulled a few frames. The one hive is EXTREMELY aggressive due to the summer dearth. However, they were finding water and enough food to keep the hive growing. The middle hive has absolutely exploded in strength and while we didn't see the queen we did see plenty of evidence she's ali...

Started on the far "left" hive which we did 2 weeks ago. This hive was the least spicy, and the one we saw the queen in last. However, this time we didn't see the queen. AND we went all the way into the bottom deep. We're not very hopeful that this hive will make it through the winter, but we will check it in mid September to see where it's at. Active today, time of year and weather can get the riled up good.🤔When mine get 😡Grumpy they get the ☁SMOKE!☁tell their 😭eyes water.😁Don't get to frustrated, I ran into a similar issue with a bunch of frames I built my 1st year.

      This is the end of my second season, last year I had 2. By now I had one colony die out due to starvation, and the second hive was dying out and would die by Christmas / New Years (When I found the queen on the ground). This year I have 2 REALLY healthy hives and a 3rd where the hive is weak, but if I keep an eye on it "might" make it. We'll see. Smoke does make the "Spicy hive" riled super quick. The Middle hive doesn't like the smoke but they behave as I'd expect. And the 3rd hive just isn't strong enough to want to smoke it. The frame situation is super annoying. I need to figure out a long term solution for frames I build. They worked for one season (last year) and this year I had 3 frames fall apart. ACK! Hopefully I can come up with a solution for that. The commercial built frames are holding ALOT stronger. The ones from the NUCs also are holding up (but when I asked the one he said he used glue). I will need to find a non-toxic glue to ensure I don't poison my bees. On to hopefully a successful overwintering and I can graduate from "Bee-Haver" to an official "Bee-Keeper"

    Looks like beekeeping is not your “ thing “ ?? Did you import those bees from Africa ?

    • @dcsblessedbees
      @dcsblessedbees 7 дней назад

      No that can be pretty standard Fall/Winter Behavior, Bees are Bees not Pets.

      Hey! Thanks for stopping by. I'm not a professional by any means, but been having fun doing the beekeeping thing. This is the end of my 2nd year. The video here is a little boring in nature but I felt it was important to show how bees behave when they've been couped up in cold weather for 4 days and then you mess with them even when it's 70 degrees out (unseasonally). Fall bees will be super aggressive in late fall. I needed to get the entrance reducuers into the hive for winter. I had to wait for an optimal day to "break down" to fit them in. So content is content and others get to observe how the bees end up behaving. Hive 1 has been super aggressive all season. I called it the "spicy hive" because the girls have a mean (but not entirely africanized) nature. I'm going to let them over winter and see if they get better temperment. If they make it through the winter, requeening is definitely in the cards. Hive 2 (Middle) is way calmer, and more productive. They are going to be the ones I hope the most survive the winter. I hope they all do, but my betting money is on the middle one to make it. Hive 3... original queen absconded, replacement queen had 4 days and a bear came and tipped the colony. And so far the replacement queen is making a really decent go... but the girls aren't eating their food. I'm not hopeful that they survive the winter. But we'll see.

    • @JeanLaValley
      @JeanLaValley 7 дней назад

      Agree - Bees are no pets and this is one of those things where I needed to make sure the bees got their entrance reducers on. I'll make one final video where I wrap and put the candy board and quilt boxes on it. Then they will be on their own till March.

    just posted a video myself of this same thing. bear got 3 of my hives. put an electric wire about knee high around your hives with charger. they get hit once and theyll never come back. I feel your pain for sure its so heartbreaking especially this time of year when you know without a queen they wont make it. glad you found your queen though. you could reduce them down to one box and get some candy boards made up to keep them through winter. you could even just pour pure granulated sugar into that top feeder and take off that center cap.

  • @dcsblessedbees
    @dcsblessedbees Месяц назад

    Nice the others are looking good, maybe a bit grumpy but they are that way this time of year. Was that the one that got knocked over, oh ok ya.😁Ya they look like they maybe ok, that would be sweet.👍

      @JeanLaValley Месяц назад

      Yeah the first hive in the video was the one knocked over mid week prior. The othe rhives look great. The weather is starting to change so while I would like to think the hive will survive but it's going to take alot of will power from the girls. So winter feeding is gonna be essential. Candy board making over the next 10 days

    That's no fun, gather them back up set them back together. In many cases bees can be more resilient then we give them credit for. Give it a few days and see how it looks, give them a quick inspection and some extra food. Sorry for the situation stick at it, beekeeping is hard. Thanks for sharing.

    Hi from southern New Zealand 👋😮tough and upsetting discovery. Im glad you found all the frames and the queen thats positive. Personally from what ive learned i would suspect a bear attack. If its any consolation, that bear would have got more stings than i care to think about. Theres a number of clues, claw traces on the super, dragged and chewed comb. Honeybees are very resilient to these kinds of attacks, its similar to a hive collapse which I have dealt with, one of the hazards of living in a earthquake prone country, big shakes knock over hives. No bears, lots of earthquakes. you will have lost bees and brood but the colony will instinctively cluster around the thickest area of brood regardless of the orientation of the box. I encourage you not to get disheartened, its a nasty thing to find but its unfortunately a part of beekeeping. Hives do occasionally get attacked or collapse. Strapping your hives with a strong metal strap, we call them emlocks im not sure what the North American equivalent is, a strong strap will help, the colony will still get knocked around but the boxes won't separate. If youre part of a bee club or have a commercial beekeeper you can consult talk to other beekeepers in your area and take thier advice and suggestions for solutions. Dealing with the unexpected is part of keeping bee's, no matter where in the world you are. Unfortunate discovery but your colony will bounce back 👍👋

      Thanks for that. The good news here is we saw the queen towards the end of the video. So she didn't get killed. The downer is it's SOOOO late in the season that trying to get to full strength for the winter is going to be super tall order. I'm not very confident about that hive. The other two hives are VERY strong and healthy though. So Fingers crossed.

    Might be worth putting a cover on the bottom of the hive before winter sets in. Open to the weather on the bottom in winter has to make it hard to keep warm.

  • @rtxhoneybees
    @rtxhoneybees Месяц назад

    Sorry that am seeing this so late but you need to take that top box off and freeze the frames. You are 21 days from your first new bee and there are not enough bees to guard those resources. Smoking your new queen is a really bad idea. You need her pheromone to help with acceptance.

    • @JeanLaValley
      @JeanLaValley Месяц назад

      I was using the smoke to move the girls around and didnt even think that may have had an impact on the hive acceptance. I lucked out and they have accepted her on visual inspection yesterday (she was out laying eggs). I will keep an eye on the resoueces, and its being late in season has me worried. Good suggestion.

    Just a little observation, they only stinging your gloves because you are handling them a little rough. Think about it. Be a little more careful and yoy will be surprised at how calm they will be. Just trying to help.

      Totally agree, great observation. I have been having a tough time with glove fit. I am either comically oversized (clown size) or they fit fine, but definitely rough on the girls as I find a good pair. When I am slow and steadt they are super calm.

      I am a 2nd year hobbyist. I am attending a local bee club monthly, and attended last years state bee convention. I spent 2 years during covid fascinated with local keeping. Jumped right in, and my only regret is not having a mentor within an hour to work with. Lots of commercial keepers, but no real backyard hobbyists... so it's been a self taught experience. I will most likely make a video explaining the past years at the end of the season. Thanks for the idea!

    Sir how to identify the queen cell? Thank you

    • @JeanLaValley
      @JeanLaValley Месяц назад

      Hey - Good question! They look like peanuts. If they exist mid-frame, they are supercedure cells. If they are at the vert bottom of a frame, they are swarm cells. They are usually 1/2 - 3/4 inch in size. You can tell they are startibg to build them or creating a practice "play cup" when they take a cell and create a cell that extends out and is twice the with of a normal cell. It will look like the top of an acorn shell.

    Try drilling a hole in the bottom back side of the box . Make it a little bigger then the tip of the instavap. And treat your bees at night that way all your bees are getting the treatment. I use a golf tee to plug my hole after I'm done treating. Works great

    • @JeanLaValley
      @JeanLaValley Год назад

      Thank you for the advice! after my experience treating this first administration with a vaporizer. After this first aplication and also because I want a little space between the opening and frames, I bought 1 inch spacer boards to lift the bottom brood box up. I was thinking about drilling a hole and administering from the back. This is a great confirmation that was going in the right direction. Administering at night was something I hadn't thought about, but definitely seems like it would be the optimal discouragement from leaving the hive right away. Do you put a towel to close off the front of the hive when administering at night?

    • @charliedwelly9392
      @charliedwelly9392 Год назад

      I've done it with and without blocking the entrance with a towel . Some bees will come out of the hive but they don't fly off usually just climb around the hive then go back in.
