Forrest Gump sure has gone places!

First, great movie. But JFC, is Zemeckis capable of even a single iota of subtext? He has to smack you over the face with everything. "LOOK HOW TIME OBSESSED MY MAIN CHARACTER IS!!!". The entire film is like this. Narratively, this scene is also made irrelevant by a directorial choice- the kid. If this whole package delivery is meant to illustrate the importance of time, then who does he have it shipped across the city to a location that now relies on some kid running with said package? Since when does FedEx include foot traffic to deliver a package? Why not just send it to the hub who's employees you are currently chastising? And this was clearly premeditated as he knew the kid's name and that he worked for candy bars and shitty electronics. It's HIS fault he delivered the package to the wrong address. Also, did he forget that FedEx has a range of delivery options at different price points? No delivery company ever just delivers "as fast as they can". It's 3 day, 2 day, overnight, etc. C'mon Chuck. Get your shit together. I'm starting to thing that God just got tired of your whining and delivered you next day to that island deliberately.

This scene has not aged well at all. First of all, Russians are not Americans and never will be. I doubt very much that hanks’ approach here would be effective. The Ukraine invasion proves how utterly silly we were in thinking we could just transport our values to another culture.
