Excerpts fromTraditional Folk Sessions.
These are extracts from folk sessions mainly across the North East of England and are primarily Irish music.
Feel free to name the tunes.
Invite me to your session.
Public Notice:
Most of the sessions I attend are in the public domain. Frequently we see more than one mobile camera phone capturing events.
Leaders of some sessions invite me and so ensure more publicity for their gathering. Others appreciate there is a historical record for future generations.
Invites to private events are again on the basis that occasions can be shared wider afield by relatives and friends often in far flung countries.
If any musician does not wish to appear please advice me before hand and we can then agree positioning so you are not in shot.
If anyone is unhappy about an existing video and wishes it to be deleted, please do make contact. Others may be upset if we delete.
I emphasise there is no financial gain through this channel.

Outside the weather had been awful! But there was a warm welcome at this session. My first time at this session and both the music and conversation were good. Stories were told and the background to tunes discussed. Our host Tom Walsh was most convivial!

There is something about an Irish Session where musicians enjoy sharing their music and banter. It invariably is a good place to be, no matter where in the world you come across such a session. Your all over the place Seamus - worse than me ! And that's saying something 😂
I am one of those freeborn men of the travelling people
It was a great weekend
Great music and great coverage Seamus.
Anyone know the names of these tunes?
The Loudon Wainright 111 song 'The Letter that Never Came' was sung by Tom Kinsella, I believe.
Apologies, Des Maguire and Karen Day... I left out your names. The Four Provinces Band are Ian Kirkpatrick on piano box, his son Calum on fiddle, Des Mcguire on two row box, his daughter Katy on fiddle, Bennie Mc Hugh on fiddle and Pat Bass on piano
Please add your name in the comments if you attended, and I missed you out. Apologies.
What fun!!
Days gone by but loved it
I'm glad you enjoyed it. Maybe the next one?
The fiddler next to “Barney” is really enjoying himself. HNY fella
Dan Hands ... a superb fiddler!
The fellow on the right hand side looks like Barney McKenna but, alas, Barney had left us in 2012.
You prompted some great memories of days gone by.
Pure joy. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
What a session!! Joyful noise to welcome the New Year. Great stuff.
lovely session
Fabulous way to start a new year! Well done all ❤
We hope you have a good year Carol
What a sound loved it... Well done every one Amazing...
Thank you kindly Ronnie.
Well done Seamus. HNY.
Anyone know what the tune from 7:48-9:15 is called?
I wonder is this the same tune? thesession.org/tunes/4587.
St. Anne's Reel. 😉
@@johntait491Thanks John
@@seamusbreen-shey No I was wrong. St. Annes finishes at 7.48. Don't know the next tune. Sorry.
@@johntait491I think it might be Aires De Pontevedra. But then I'm a bodhrán player .. so what do I know!!😅
Corrections: celebrations, Newton Aycliffe, Steve Lacey also played the guitar, and Geoff Wallace played the Bodhrán
Where is that?

God blessed us with Mike Harding, I for one have enjoyed what seems like a lifetime of fun with his comedy, his records and his music, and of course those wonderful nights seeing his live shows. This is indeed a treat for us all. Many thanks for sharing this.
When are these sessions normally on? Thanks
The Elm Tree Durham is on every Monday night starting about 7.45
Check Durham Folk page on Facebook for updates
@@seamusbreen-shey thank you, I’ll have to call down some night.
I see Jed’s still playing his £20 fiddle !! 🤗
The closing piece should read 'Thank you to the Elm Tree' etc
A truly splendid session, even by Elm Tree standards.
Sadly, 2 weeks after that session, and over 40 years of regular traditional sessions, the musicians were told they were no longer welcome.
Jack, this is verry very sad. Strangely enough, I detected that possibility when I was there. They took more and more chairs away from the musicians & I thought then the writing was on the wall. 😢😢
agh! another of them boghrans again !
I think my spell checker is tuned to the key of G. Must retune it to D! 😊
@@seamusbreen-shey hi seamus, only fun intended !great videos of great sessions.nice to see what's happening across the pond.i am a full-time bodhran maker since 2006,a dubliner based in brittany, where irish music is very much alive and well.thanks for the reply, joyeux noel !☘🎶🐐
boghran??
oh, there's one of them "boghrans.
boghran ??
anybody know what a boghran is?
It's lovely to hear sessions in other parts of the county. Great video.
Thanks, Stephanie. Where are you? Any sessions there?
Nice one Seamus🪗🙂
Another professional job. Thanks Seamus
Glad you enjoyed it, Sean. I enjoyed your playing at the weekend .. if I have the right Sean! 😅
@@seamusbreen-shey Tis me!
Wow ! Well done !👌
Thanks a lot 😊 Joyeux Noël
Slàinte! 🍺🍻
slainte means health/good health, and not cheers
@paulloughlin1529 oops 😬
I'm always so fascinated to see, all over the world, people who don't necessarily know each other, meeting up in a pub and managing to find common points in their knowledge of this famous and very broad music that has become universal! Finally a positive point in this world where individualism and money seem to rot humanity. Bravo to all these “resistance fighters”! And Bravo to you, Seamus, for highlighting this!😀
Merci beaucoup, cher musicien. The social camaraderie is as important as the music, I believe. For a few hours, we focus on the music, enjoy the banter and leave a complex, difficult world outside the door. You know the same in your wonderful gatherings.
Great Montage.
Go raibh maith agat a Sheamusín
You've captured another great bunch of sessions Seamus. Well done everyone...lively, vibrant and great tunes. There are a few faces I recognise and have not seen in while...so to Gill, Matt and Benny, I send my regards.
Thank you for sharing this wonderful time
From one seamus to another ... you are very welcome 😊
Keep it coming Seamus. Andy
Andy, that's the plan! 😅
What was the song at 12:29? Cheeres👍

@simonmarsden7610 Ty🙂👍
@simonm7610 .maybe a little fast? Thanks for replying to @EnglishRepublican48
@@seamusbreen-shey Yes, maybe a little fast. Certainly faster then I would have played it if I had been the one starting it. But then I like slow airs, so might be criticised for playing a waltz as if it was a slow air! 😀
Excellent work Seamus. Thanks a lot.
Nice
Irish music, song and dance has been a component of the whitby experience for the very long time I have been going there. Long may it be so. Even the Catholic priest at St Hilda's, who has just retired, was a member of the "Chancey Brothers", a tribute group composed of Irish priests. . Ironically, following the Synod of Whitby, hosted by the great St Hilda and at which the Northumbrians decided to adopt Roman over Celtic ways, many of the English monks in the Celtic camp left England and settled in Co Mayo. Thanks for another great video, Seamus.
Always nice to see Mally.😊
English folk tunes are just dead😂
I videod a festival in Sheffield earlier in the year, and I have to say, English folk is alive and well and is most enjoyable
Proper Job. In the Groove.
Wish I'd been there.
It would have added to the enjoyment of all!
just watched 5 of your videos, still looking for someone smiling.
My kind of session.
Good to hear that.😊
