Splitting rockwool plants great germination rate! Tower garden flex and home.
Using a great germination rate to my advantage of course!! Lots of times my plantings germination 80-100 percent of the seeds I plant. And I like to use up as many as I can.
I have one of each tower, so I own 2 tower gardens. Tower garden flex and home.
So starting up both towers is easy. One planting for quite a few varieties can give me enough for both towers.
Although I do like to add variety to either tower, I do still plant some of the ones I love in both towers!
Even if you only have 1 tower you can use this to your advantage. Only plant up about half your rockwool needed. And split once they’ve germinated. That way you won’t waste a bunch h of seeds. But still be at the same growing...

Creating cucumbers in tower garden home and flex
Hello my lady. The house tower is very beautiful. I am curious about the answers to a few questions about the tower and growing vegetables in the tower. I will be very pleased if you answer. You said that the house tower is 24 inches round and 58 inches high. Is 24 inches the measurement of the water tank's circumference or diameter? How many centimeters of pot diameter can fit into the tower's planting areas? How many inches or centimeters high and in diameter are each of the 5 compartments in your tower? Thank you in advance for your answers. I am sending my love and greetings from Türkiye.
@@halilbalaban1056 hi there. Thanks for your questions. The tower garden company states these dimensions. So the tower garden Home is 23 inches across. I stated 24 by mistake. Pretty close though:) “Dimensions: 58"x 23" x 23" inches / 148 x 59 x 59 cm (without lights)” I will respond on the others as well in a different comment 👍
reply #2. I want to make sure I understand your question, but I'll answer to what I think you want to know. The 'pods' in each tower garden section number anywhere from 4 to 8 (depending on the tower garden you would like), each 'net pot' measures approx 2inches across and 2 inches deep. The rockwool, aka the growing medium, sits in these net pots. I'll send you a photo so you can see what I mean. In the Home tower garden though, there are 16 planting spots that measure as the rockwool does, they do not need a 'net pot' to grow. They sit in the growing are without. I hope that helps ca.towergarden.com/collections/nutrients-supplies/products/net-pot-30

What variety is that?
That is gourmet lettuce. That particular seed came with the tower garden kit.
What kind of lettuce is this?
@@kathrynwhelbourn2140 it is called bronze arrowhead. I’ve done a few videos about it
What veg is that?
I said it right at the beginning. Sorry it wasn’t very clear!! Arugula. Lovely plant. Very versatile!
@audreystowers I did not hear that, kinda figured that might have been arugula
After purchasing all that, I can imagine that any food grown in the tower would be more expensive than the same food bought at the grocery store. After the first year, you still have the expense of the nutrients. It seems to me that these are for people who like to fiddle around with plants and don't mind the expense. Even growing some food, you still can't grow enough so you'll still need to shop for groceries.
Hi, thanks for the comment. It seems you don't know too much about growing aeroponically in vertical towers. Just for one you mentioned the cost of the nutrients. They last close to a year, and that was using in 2 towers. Which comes out to about $7.50 CDN a month, give or take. Such a minimal expense. There is also so much more to growing your own food, like knowing where our food comes from, the quality of food we eat, what was added to your food when it comes from other unknown places, being able to source healthy produce all year round even in cold climates, when buying from grocers (yes even organic) you have no idea how that 'food' was treated until it ended up in your own fridge. No to mention the increasing cost of food in the stores. The more food I can grow outdoors, and indoors, the less I need to source from the grocery stores.
Tell us about the clay balls
The clay balls or pebbles are often used in hydroponics. I bought them from a hydroponics store. They work for supporting some plants and roots. Especially some of the heavier ones. But I have used them instead of rockwool as well.
Do you use your swiss chard in a salad or do you cook it?
You can do either! My sister eats a lot of my chard, and I asked her too. She said also eat in a salad, or a stir fry, in a smoothie also. Some like it raw. Some like it steamed or fried, or in a soup. A simple search for recipes will bombard you with options!
They are beauties. Did you say rain plant?
Actually that is hard to hear isn't it! That would be 'romaine' lettuce. An absolute favorite of mine on tower gardens.
What kind of peppers are those from incredible seeds?

Hi there, where do you order your microgreen seeds? Thank you!
Hi there, thanks for the question. For starters there is confusion between what is called microgreens and what is called babygreens. When I started out planting in my tower gardens the company called what was planted in the smaller ports, 'microgreens.' They are now called, more accurately, baby greens. Microgreens are generaly grown en masse, have a one time harvest, and then need to be planted again. Baby greens as grown on the tower gardens, if harvested correctly, grow back again and again for several months. The baby green seed mixes that the company sells are great. Also there are a couple of Canadian seed companies that sell baby green seeds. I use chives and garlic chives in the baby green sections which grow awesome there. I grow a couple of different varieties of parsley in the smaller ports. I have used gourmet lettuce and arugula as baby greens as well. I have used peas as baby greens in the small ports too. I hope that helps!
I really want to set up a system like this to supplement my outdoor garden (which is too cold to produce anything in the winter), but I'm curious: the Flex Tower (the one on the left with the lights on) has what appears to be only LED lights. Am I right about that? If so, how are you tomatoes doing fine? Don't flowering plants need full spectrum lights?
Hi there, thanks for the question. The LED Indoor Grow Lights webpage states this, "The lights are full spectrum and support fruiting and flowering crops. Just stay on top of your pruning and pollinating game...unless you have a house full of bees." I hope that helps! I can help you get a tower, or answer any questions you have. If you want a personalized, more informative conversation about the towers, where you can ask questions specific to your situation just get ahold of me at audreystowers@proton.me
Very nice garden thanks gor sharing
Well thank you. Yes it’s doing very well!!
Hi there~ I know I keep asking questions but I don’t know how else to ask but here on YT. I have my seedlings in my tower garden, they are coming along quite nice. It’s been a week and I want to turn the system on but I’m still very confused on how much nutrients to put in You said in a previous post do half of what they recommended, that seems easy enough But how do I know when I’m supposed to adjust it to regular strength? This is all so new to me and your channel has been super helpful. And what ph am I looking for in the beginning. I don’t want to mess this up! Thanks so much!!!
Hi there, thanks for asking. I may need some clarification though. You said you have your seeds germinating in the tower garden, but its not turned on yet? So the water pump and lights are not on? RE minerals, yes. Start with only half of the minerals solutions they recommend. With brand new seeds that haven't even germinated, and/or brand new seedlings (an inch or so high) they don't require much nutrient help yet. Once they get to be bigger, 3 weeks or so, then I would top up my water and minerals then. I am always aiming for a pH of ~ 5.6-6.5. That is what the company quotes for best pH. Many plants can handle a bit more one way or the other. It takes some experimenting if moving beyond the range of 5.5-6.5. So I try to stick within that range.
@@audreystowers thanks for answering so quickly! I have them in the tower with the grow lights on 16 hours a day and I’ve been watering my hand with a spray bottle to keep them moist. It’s been two weeks and I feel it’s time to turn in on and get the nutrients going. First time doing this, I’m used to growing outside. I will follow your directions and go from there. I appreciate your guidance very much!! Thank you !
@@CheflisashomegrowngourmetTV you’re welcome. And ok I understand what you’re doing now. As long as they’re growing. I’d just want to make sure that the misting is enough to keep them saturated. Yup get the lights and water going 👍👍 Feel free to post a few pictures as a reply if you can
How does the system let you know when to add water?
Hi thanks for the question. There are 2 different tower gardens. The one you see here is the ‘flex tower garden.’ It is a bit bigger than the other so you don’t have to add water as often. There is an access hole on the flex reservoir that you can just pull the lid off and look inside. I add water when it’s a few inches above the water pump. Easy to see. The other tower is the ‘home tower garden.’ It is different in that it has a water monitor on it. So it’s super easy to check water levels. I hope that helps!
Hi. This is very helpful in helping me decide which one to get. My plants should have more room to grow with the Flex!. :-)
@@raphael210 I’m glad I could help. I am a distributor of the tower gardens. I’d be more than happy to answer any other questions you have. Or to jump on the phone. And help you get your food growing phenomenon!
Hi you came up randomly on my timeline so I checked out your shorts. I might have missed it but I was wondering if you have to have a continuous water feed or does it recycle water like a garden fountain?
Hi, thanks for your question. The bottom reservoir holds water and minerals. And there is a water pump in the reservoir that is on a simple timer. It runs for 5 minutes every 45 minutes if your tower garden is inside your home. It will run more often on an outdoor setting if using the towers outdoors. It is all timed, no babysitting the tower. I hope that helps!
@@audreystowers yes it did ☺️! Thank you! I subscribed to your channel so that once I settle in my new place I can order one to test out. Was there a big change in your electric bill because of the lights and water tank?
@@oooreginasaid thanks for the reply. There has not been a big change in my power bill, and I have both models of the tower gardens. Tower garden (the company) provided an estimation a few years ago of 4-5$ per month. I am from Saskatchewan Canada, and I had a local fellow who works with solar energy, do an estimate for me based on Sask charges. It came to ~ 8-9$/month. @@audreystowers I'll definitely check out your videos and FB. I'm a little overwhelmed right now with my move 😅, but I have been looking for an alternative way to garden for awhile now. Thank you again for answering my questions. I also followed and will definitely share your videos on my more active social media accounts. I don't have a huge following or anything but I'm in a few groups that would find the towers useful.
Which tower garden fo you prefer?
Thanks for your question, that is a tough one to answer. It really depends on how much room you have, and what you want to grow. I have room for both towers, so I never had to make that decision. I do love both towers. They absolutely do each have their own wonderful aspects. If I could only pick 1 tower, and I had the room for it, I'd likely choose the flex tower. And I would add the combo extension kit to the top of it for extra growing space for things I like to grow, like chives and garlic chives, pea baby greens, etc. Do you have a preference?
Good to know! I just started my seeds the other day (5 days ago) I did notice I don’t see anything happening with spinach but I do with the other greens. So helpful~ thank you 🙏
Thank you. Spinach can take longer that is for sure. But it doesn’t hurt to help them out either!👍
When you’re germinating the seeds ( I watched some of your other videos) are you putting them in the TG with the grow lights? And how are you watering them in the germinating stage? Are you turning on the TG ? Or hand watering until they sprout? I’m confused about this stage. I’m just starting my seeds for the first time this week. And, I love your channel! You are so organized. Ty
Hi there, thanks for your questions. I have done both methods of germination 1) in the germination tray, where I germinate all plants in the germ'n tray, I put them on top of my fridge (may be a bit warmer up there), and have a reminder set to water/spritz them daily. Then when they germinate and are an inch or so high I move them to my tower garden. 2) germinating in the tower garden, works best when the tower is empty. There is water in the reservoir, the lights are on 14-16 hours on the timer, and the water pump is set to "I" for indoor. This works well, but yes I use the tower garden lights and water pump. Easy, very little effort on my part. I just watch them grow:)
What size clay balls do you use- I haven’t seen these before
@@essicajmj These are hydroponic balls, often called clay pebbles or hydroballs. Easy to find online. Also in hydroponics stores. I don't know that they come in different sizes. The ones I have here are all smaller round pebbles, some a wee bit smaller than others. I hope that helps!
Looks so good!! I just watched the video before this and the TG was empty. So fun to see this abundance !

Hi Aubrey, Would you be able to do a video on how to take out the pump and clean it?
Hi there, I will try to remember to do that. I have to take my flex apart soon to clean it, so will be cleaning the pump then. Watch for a video coming up in the next week or so!
Hello Audrey, do you mean that the seeds germinate directly on the tower? You don't use a heating mat/grow lights and then put them in the tower when they are tall enough with roots? Thanks!
Hi, thanks for the question. I have done both (germinate in the tower, and germinate in the tray outside of the tower). I like to experiment so I have tried both methods of germination. A tower garden comes with seeds and a germination tray, and the planting medium (rockwool). I have had my tower garden home seen in this video, for over a year. I just recently cleaned it and put it back together, I planted up my 32 rockwool (following best practice), and just plunked them right into the spots I had assigned for them in my personal tower garden home planting plan. I have had really great results so far. And I don't expect that to change:) p,s, I have never used a heating mat. p,s,s, If using the germination tray I don't wait until I see roots out of the bottom of the rockwool. I wait until I see leaves up top. I hope that answers your question!
Thank you Audrey, it does!
How do you water them at this beginning stage? Do you turn the TG on with the nutrients? Or just water by hand until they really show some greens? Ty
@@CheflisashomegrowngourmetTV Hi there, I think I answered this in a previous question you had. Let me know if I have not. - in addition to what I said in the other comment, I only use 1/2 strength nutrients in the first water if germinating plants in the tower garden. I use the tower garden & water pump timer to water the plants, just like I do when the plants are mature. Same thing. Water pump set on "I" for indoor.

do you need to put another seed after harvesting?
For the baby greens you do not have to plant another right away after harvesting. Baby greens are grown to reap the benefits of harvesting again and again for weeks at a time, the key is to harvest correctly so that a lot of re-growth occurs. Daily actually. For baby greens (what they used to call microgreens) you plant more seeds in one pod, let them grow to a suitable height, and then harvest. Use them on lots of foods, like perhaps salads, omelets, pizzas, etc. This is a good quick video to show how to harvest correctly for repeat growth. In at about 30 seconds +. @@audreystowers yeah I started 2 years ago and still learning 😅
Hi again i just posted a question on a more recent video. Would the indoor plant grow enough greens for 5 adults? Women, all trying to have daily greens. I know you can only give an opinion. Thank you.
The company states that a tower garden should grow enough food to feed a family of 4. Of course this all depends on how you decide to use the real estate of the tower garden, the overall growing area. If you grow more plants that take a long time in order to harvest (an example might be cabbage), vs lettuce varieties (that grow quickly and feed many for weeks and weeks), then feeding more people will be harder. But if you grow things like chard and romaine and red sails and sooo many other varieties, you shouldn't have a problem. There is another option for feeding more people. And that would be to either invest in 2 towers, or a tower garden family (3 flex towers) which also gives added variety to feed more people. Or add on an extension to the one tower garden, and you can grow even more plants in that one tower. I hope that helps!
@@audreystowers it does help thank you very much.
@@monember2722 you're welcome
Hello. Can you tell me if you think the grow lights could be considered disruptive at all and whether electricity use isbsignificantly affected? If possible. I was wondering if they are affordable or practical long term. Thank you in advance for your time.
Hi there, thanks for the questions. I am not sure what you mean by the lights being 'disruptive.' Just so that you know they are very bright when they are on. So you wouldn't want to try to sleep in the same room when they are on. Mine are on from about 6a.m until 9 p.m., in a different room. I live in Saskatchewan, and I had someone who works in solar do some calculations for me. This is regarding the entire tower usage though, no just lights. Using the current SK power rates at the time it was about 8-9$ per month for electricity. There was another study done via Tower Garden that noted ~ 4-5$ per month in cost. MHO on practicality long term for tower gardens ... lets just say I have not bought any greens from the stores in a year. No herbs, no chives etc. The varying availability, quality and price of these items in grocery stores makes it very worthwhile for me. As I have taken many pics of even the so called organic greens in local stores. It is not even close to what I can grow on my tower gardens. Anything you can grow in the tower is 12 months of the year. At the rising cost of food these days a lady I know calculated it takes approx 6 months for the investment to pay for itself (lots of variables here). I do not think grocery items are going down in price anytime soon. I also believe in the easy access to healthy food = healthier lifestyle. I hope that helps!
do the baby green ports still need clips? I thought they had holders built-in already?
Hi there thanks for the question. No, the baby greens ports do not need the clips. I just figured it out for myself that I like using them in these small square ports. I just offset the clip a bit in the rockwool, and slide it down into the port. It’s super easy to pull out the rockwool when it’s time to change out the plant! I hope that answers your question.
I am curious what type of tomatoes do you grow in your tower?
Hi there, if you see some on this video I have 2 different varieties on here right now. I have 2 red robin and 1 orange hat. Both what you'd call bush varieties. Are you growing tomatoes atm? Do you have a tower garden?
@audreystowers yes, I do have a tower garden. I put sweet 100s in there and they are to big! I'm new at growing in the tower , did well with lettuce and chard.
Where you you get the seeds for the tomatoes?
@@thatsjustbull812 Yes that variety of tomatoes is indeterminate, so grows very large. Stick to bush type plants for the tower garden. Lettuce (many many varieties) and chard grow very well in the towers.
@@thatsjustbull812 I live in Canada so I like to stick with Canadian seed suppliers. Places like West Coast Seeds, Rainbow Seeds, Mackenzie, etc. So many great seeds suppliers!
If you only had one tower for indoor growing with the light kit already... but wanted to buy an extension, which of the two would you choose? The baby greens kit with 32 ports? Or the combo kit with 4 normal ports & 16 baby green ports?
For starters I'd need to know which tower garden you already have (flex or home). As the home already has 16 baby green ports. And you would definitely need to take into consideration what it is you want to be able to grow and eat. Without that information from you, my first choice would be more of the normal ports.
@@audreystowers Thanks for the reply! I have the flex. I'm not quite sure what I want to be growing unfortunately...
So is this a brand new tower, and you haven't grown anything yet? @@a3_a3
@stowers Yes, haha. someone gave me a brand new in box tower for free... Then I found a good deal on the light kit just the other day. And before I put it all together, was thinking of buying the extension kit
interesting, wow! that is quite the gift to give someone. Good for you! I would suggest just growing with the one you have now, and adding the extension kit once you get used to growing in the tower. @n9os1mw9x
Thank you so much for posting this
You’re very welcome!! I’m glad it helped you🙏
Hi Aubrey, I am growing the red robin tomato on my home tower, I believe similar to yours. I have a lot of tomatoes, but they are still green for almost a month now. How long did it take yours to turn red? Also have you grown any cucumbers? If yes, can you share your experience? I am growing a mini-me F1 cucumber that is parthenocarpic, but finding a few shiveled up when still very tiny.
Hi thanks for the comment🙏 I have heard this question before. Just be patient, they will ripen! While they’re green they are likely still growing bigger as well. And then is the ripening stage. Keep me posted!
Thanks. I will patiently wait. Any experience with mini cucumbers?
@user-dg6mu7mu2f I have not tried the mini cucs yet no.
A lot of my cherry tomatoes have finally ripened. However I was disappointed that they are not really sweet. Are your red robin cherry tomatoes sweet? From your experience, which type of tomatoes are sweet and works for the tower garden. Thanks.
@@BonnieC-v9b what variety of cherry tomatoes did you grow? My red robin cherry tomatoes are delicious yes. I am not really sure I would call them 'sweet,' I don't know that I would call any tomato 'sweet' tho. But they are very good yes! I have also grown a scotia tomato that I got the seed from a variety pack I bought, it was a medium sized tomatoe and was very good. I have another variety on my towers right now but it is not ripe yet, so I won't report on that one until I try it. I find with the cherry tomatoes that I had to be patient for my first harvest, as the first batch grew and the plant itself grew. And since then I have had repeated batches and tomatoes of all stages, from flower to ripening. Clumps of tomatoes all over the plant (see other videos).
It would be nice to see the whole tower garden
Hi thanks for the comment. I have tons of videos of the whole tower gardens on my RUclips channel! Perhaps I’ll do a tour of them again soon!
