They Built a RUNWAY in the Clouds
A new runway has been opened, but the locals aren't satisfied with just being visited by the Pilatus Porter. See how they are making way for a Cessna Caravan to one day land at this runway in the clouds.

A Bush Pilot's Day
Просмотров 85 тыс.Год назад
This is what a typical day looks like for a pilot in Papua. Watch me try to keep it together when I can't get a straight answer from anyone in the village. 🙈 Runways featured are: Sentani Bomela Wamena Pipal Tanggeam
It's just a few clouds

If the weather is good, we go! But sometimes the weather reports in Papua, Indonesia, aren't always that reliable. This video was filmed over a week as multiple attempts were made to get one plane-load of cargo delivered from Dekai to Wipon. Every RTB (return to base) is a loss for the airline so we try our best to make sure the weather is good before we depart, but sometimes you just can't win!

This is the first flight to Laryi, a new airstrip in Papua, Indonesia. The runway is less than 1,000 feet (300 meters) long, curved, and situated on a narrow ridgeline at above 6,500 feet. The people of Laryi have been asking for a pilot to open the runway for months, and it just so happens, that I am in the area...

Taking a Pilatus Porter to the village of Megom in the mountains of Central Papua, Indonesia.
Steep, wet, and short... A classic Porter runway

Doing some circuits at the runway in Samenage. This airstrip in Central Papua, Indonesia is typical for the region. Though long for a Pilatus Porter (over 350 meters) it has several things that make it challenging, like multiple pitch changes, mud, unclear runway edges, and weather that can produce strong winds and clouds that can move in quickly.

Getting around in Papua is hard. These local drivers and passengers pitch in to make a river crossing possible near the city of Wamena
Whale Sharks of Papua

Whale sharks are common in the fishing areas off the coast of Nabire, Papua. They hang around the boats and fishing platforms looking for a snack. Getting to swim alongside them was a special privilege.

A little weekend adventure. Flying, hiking, and rappelling into a cave outside Wamena in Indonesian New Guinea
Great video and story. Enjoyed from Leyte, Philippines
Tribal guys had cell phones. They are not.that disconnected.
Great video! I am currently finishing my training to do this type of flying but in Central Africa. Keep up the good work!
There joy was palpable, beautiful to witness
Sick vid, but you said it was their first access to the outside world, meanwhile you talked to someone who inspected it and a broski greeted you holding a smartphone…
i didn´t know that....this is truely amazing....i´ve bin wanting to be a pilot since i was a kid...it´s a blast how you land the plane at these short lanes up the hills....and give these people hope....i love it!
why are they small
That’s awesome! The love they showed when you arrived
Being someone born in Malaysia , I could understand the Indonesian language they are speaking and it made me feel connected to these people and the pilot actually communicated pretty well.
Yeoman Service to Humanity...Salute to the Pilot and the People
They need to slow down the hokey pokey at night-if they keep it up it will require more than that plane to sustain them.
Have you tried the airstrip at Fane village in the Goilala District of Central Province, PNG? The runway gradient is about more than 5%, i think?
The controls of the PC-6 are a bit weird - how did you get used to the yoke being low under the dashboard? I also could imagine that for a right handed person this could be a challenge. Some other controls are also strange, like the funny parking brake wire thingie and the tail lock low to the left on the pilot's seat. I guess one can get used to almost anything! :-) I enjoy your videos very much, thank you for sharing!
Ohh my god careful they don’t eat you 😮
Tuhan berkati dalam pelayanan. ❤🙏
The locals are very happy with the first landing on their new ranway, it is historical for them amazing thing I think! God with them and the pilots
The licals are very happy when the pkane arraive, its amazing fort them , bring suppli
As someone who grew up a little bit in an isolated, fly in/boat in only community, I thought our dirt/Ice in the winter runway was sketchy, but this takes the cake.
Hi, i am interested to become a bush pilot. Do you have any advice? Do you have a specific way to get into it, you would recommend?
Makes me feel homesick. This airstrip/runway connects the surrounding villages to healthcare if needed.
Just wondering about the location of this airstrip? Thinking of adding it to Microsoft Flight Simulator. So far my best guess is -4.641086, 139.977371 near Bomela, where there is a village labelled Larye, and the topography looks fairly similar. Satellite imagery shows a runway there which looks somewhat similar...
It sounds like he's saying shalom! Love this! And Shalom from Nashville
Yup, a frontier flying service like this operated by Christian missionary aviation services although funded mostly by the Indonesian govt. Most Christian in Papua are evangelical Christians.
A rude pilot, ha?
tell them to put up a wind sock, a flag or just a white shirt on a stick to show wind direction on the run way...or they'll see their first plane crash.
Man this video is awesome
Glad you enjoyed it!
Epic!
This is so special. So good for these people. Great stuff
So isolated and yet you can see people showing up with smartphones
One hell of a cool adventure! Hardly anyone on the planet can say they've done this! The plane looks like it is rather rugged and built for hard use. I live in Alaska and have flown on float planes and bush planes so I understand the adventure it is to fly into remote locations on small but capable aircraft!
NO Need for the distracting stupid Music !!!!!! !!!!!
Man, I just love that plane! Always had a smile on my face when I parked her.
In 42 years of flying, that experience this pilot had that day would have been the crown achievement of my career. He will never forget this.
Hey man, whats the airline you're working for?
PT. AMA
Okay....sooooo where exactly is this. I cannot find it on Google maps.
Papoua Girls visit is hazardous 😇
Wow
Well my hat is off to the people and this "brave" pilot.
Thank almighty God for his wonderful creatioñ

Das nenne ich Wertschätzung
Pretty isolated…but a guy taking pictures with his phone? Beautiful!
If AMA didn't they they could bully and blackmail more native people into their xtian cult, they would not lift a finger to help them. Hauling bibles for the heathens, hallelujah!
You guys really are a great help for these people. Gives hope for them, I might say. Thank you for doing this. I hope you guys working in a remote villages like this won't loose your temper. Really hard to communicate. Godspeed.
A tribute to the last aviation pioneers..
