Adolphe Blanc is a very inconsistent composer. His septet (and the String Quintet No.7 which it is arranged from) is quite good; his piano quintet is laughably bad. I'm not totally sure how to feel about the string quintets No.3 and No.4. They're nice enough, but he seems scared to let the double bass in on the conversation with a voice of its own, unlike Onslow and Walckiers. That said, I personally can hardly stand Onslow's extremely dense and overcomplicated writing, so I still prefer this quintet to those of Onslow. It's just some nice, bourgeois, domestic music making, which is a very enjoyable form of chamber music. The Fabergé Quintett made the first and so far only professional recordings of Blanc's 3rd, 4th and 7th quintets, but not the 6th, which is for the same instrumentation. Maybe it'd be interesting. Or maybe not.

What a charming, unique work!

The best nonet, in my opinion (though maybe matched by Nino Rota's nonet)... Lovingly written for the nine distinct personalities of the Czech Nonet rather than for a dressed-down symphony orchestra. I hope student and amateur groups will want to give this piece a try, now that the Farrenc nonet is apparently exploding in popularity. There's 20th century harmonies and a strange, episodic form (almost like a series of theater sketches?), but should be manageable for players and listeners alike. Only problem is that the first publication used in the video only featured a score and no parts to go along with it, but several recent editions fill in the gap. Shoutouts to 12:32 with the double bass solo! This is going to be a strange comparison, but it reminds me of the track "Truman's Ship in a Bottle" from the video game Psychonauts 2; it begins with a somewhat similar-sounding double bass solo that then has stuff layered over it.

Man, I really love SCT. Thank you so much for sharing this lovely work! I was curious and procrastinating on some other work, so I looked into the wonky credits - especially since it seemed so ironic not to be able to credit the bassist on a channel designed to feature bass music! Information I can find through the New York Public Library says Craig Brown was the double bassist for _Coleridge-Taylor: Chamber music_ released by Centaur in 2004. On Presto, the same album lists both Fadial and Orenstein as having played the clarinet quintet, and Fadial the African Dances. Perhaps one or the other accidentally got listed for the Nonet, as well. [There's also another RUclips score video of the Nonet put out by the channel "University of Rochester 3D Audio," which appears to be associated with Harley himself, as it links to his UoR faculty page featuring numerous other videos from the same account. In that video description, not only does it list Brown as the bassist, but Fadial as the violinist. And if that account is truly Harley, I'd probably trust him to remember who he played with!]
