Have a question . Once you hand scrape the floor, do you then sand the floor before you apply finish . Thank you
@@alec1113 Great Question Alec!! We use a buffer & screen the floor throughly. This helps smooth out the rough edges.

Question. How do I get accredited to become an accredited installer?
@@MrAppletown Ince you become a dealer for an MFMA Mill they will be able to accredit you. ASBA (American Sports Builders Association) is working on an accreditation process. You could also go to work for an MFMA mill contractor and get accredited through that contractor.
Like the last guy, I've had tough luck finding a good video on this. Thank you for the amount of info in the process. Most just show you the before and after but nothing of the actual process. Great video to reference. It gave some confidence to give it a shot on my floors!

Good afternoon! What would be the recommended product to use when it comes to middle school (1970s) wood composite floor? We just can't seem to get it with traditional gym finish methods
@@patrickficklin Hello Patrick, by “wood composite floor” are you talking about a Maple gym floor or some other product? If you have a traditional Maple floor, but your having adhesion issues with the finish, it may be time to sand it all the way down to raw wood & repaint the game lines.
why don't you show how it works??????
@@todc8986 I have other videos showing this tool in action! It works really well!
As a contractor with exp in flooring of most types, I wonder if 1/4 inch trowel contributed to un evenness and so much sanding...I'm going to try ur method but might tamp or roll the floor as I install to make level as possible prior to sanding.....we shall see
@@stevewight1409 Hey Steve… when we do this again, we will pay A LOT more attention to cutting the blocks square and even! That would really help to reduce the filling & sanding. It’s a really nice way to install a wood floor over concrete. Good Luck to you!!
I have a dumb question...can you put 36/40 on one machine and 60 or 80 on the other and rough/fine at the same time???
@@mattmcdonald6034 Acually that is a great question!! We usually start with 36-40, and get 90-95% of the paint & finish, then 50-60, finishing with 80-80
@@mattmcdonald6034 Every job is different of course, sometimes with really thick nasty finish we start with 24-24 then work up through the sequence.
Man I hope one day I can have equipment that I can say I don’t really use. I’m just starting out on my own after doing floors for someone else for 16 years and have to rent a big machine cause they’re so expensive to buy right now and starting out on my own trying to find my way is proving kinda difficult. I was just hired as a maintenance technician for a pro basketball team's G league team and their facility. This year they cut out the budget for re screening and coating of the basketball court floors. We already dry mopped and tacked them 2 times now and they still kind of look like crap. What is the best way to polish the floors as they are? I'm assuming using a side to side machine and a white pad? And what chemical/product should we use? We are located in DE just fyi. Need your advice bad. Please advise.
@@richr909 Hello, after using your swing machines to abrade the floor and remove all the shoe marks, throughly clean the floor and then apply gym floor finish. I am unfamiliar with VOC regulations in your state, but good quality 2 component water based finishes are available through Bona or Basic Coatings that should make your gym floor look fantastic! We wish you all the best!!
@@WyomingWoodFloors Thank you so much for your response. Just have a cpl questions. 1. what chemical do I use with the white pad to abrade the floor with the swing machine 2. what chemical do I use for cleaning the floor after the swing machine?
@@richr909 A white pad is probably not sufficient to abrade the floor. Use a maroon pad or even a 150 grit screen. Most finish manufactures also have floor cleaning products. Checks with Bona, Betco, Basic Coatings, or Hillyard.
Does anyone ever use this type of vinyl tape or something similar to make the basketball court lines, instead of painting them? I'm talking about permanent tape that is covered under a layer of finish by a floor company, not when someone like a gym teacher makes temporary lines on top of the finish with regular tape that they could just peel off when they're done with it. Because that's how I think they did the lines in the school that I work at, and I'm just curious. The lines are semi transparent, so you can kind of see through them. I was watching a bunch of your videos because I was curious how those lines were done, but all I can find is videos of people painting lines, not making them with any kind of tape.
@@Melissa0774 Hello Mellissa, there is a company out of Little Rock Arkansas that is producing permanent vinyl graphics for gym floors. They are called Game Time Wraps. I cannot repost the video here, but in our RUclips Channel the video is called: “Vinyl Graphics Perfected” Also you could find additional info on the Game Time Wraps website.
What is usually under these floors? We all know it's harder for itself. And then there's plow, but between that and the concrete. There's usually either a 2 / 4 or 1 by T. Was rubber under it. Some people put carpet patting. What is the best to use? Again? I'm referring to the subflor which is the concrete between there and the first layer of plywood followed by the home
Why did you do 2 coats of Basic Coating Emulsion and 2 coats of Street Shoe?
@@KyleJordan-i3h Great Question Kyle! It really depends on the job, but in this case with so much stain on the floor, we were trying to get more build on top of the stain. The Emulsion (sealer) helps to protect the stain.

Curious. How many maroon pads do you use on the square process?
The recommendation is 500 square feet per pad. However we find it really depends on the condition of the floor.

Hi Mr. Nelson. Thank you for Sharing. Do you need to be a union contractor to get into this kind of work?
@@MrAppletown in some areas I am sure that would be required. Other places it is not.

Great information
How much do you charge per sq/ft at a Gym?
Love this innovation in such a niche market. I took over the sanding at my company from the old boy who retired , I’m lucky enough to have access to 2 sets of American 12’s both with hydrostatic old carts and a new rider with super Hummels. I am always looking to improve my sanding knowledge and trying make improvements for efficiency myself. So thankful for your videos .
I have the pleasure of using this new rider with new super Hummels , its mind blowing the silence when running. I still think the American 12 are better at removing the old urethane, but the super Hummel finish is second to none.
Where do you get the logos made ?
What was the cost for a job like this? 3-4K?
How do I get a bucket??
We don’t produce these for sale, but it is a very simple build. You need a Bulkhead fitting (from a plumbing supply store) an irrigation valve & a trash barrel.
I can't wait to try them out amazing improvements great job Paul 👍
Thank you! Been using the small ez8 sander for a long time but I bought a Hummel that didn’t come with no cords. It’s time to step it up but I know nothing about the cords. 🫡
For your brute can poly cart, can I ask the reason for the pvc pipe going up with a cap vs just having the outlet pipe at the bottom?
The PVC pipe is just an extension to operate the valve without having to bend over.
Wow nice job we also used basic Coatings semper Fi
Right back Attchya Brother!!
Wow cool show!
What is the subfloor system ????? And what are the layers you have concrete what goes on top of that and then that and then the actual hardwood planks
This was a Robbins Defender subfloor system.
Have you used this on top of paint? Like on a logo with multiple masking layers?
Hey Paul, Love the videos. So informative. What do you guys use as your baseline for leaving expansion gaps in a gym floor during install? How many rows do you space between expansion gaps and what method do you use?
Great question, we serve the Rocky Mountain west, MT, WY, Idaho, Eastern Washington. Our primary challenge is to little humidity. We usually install Robbins or Action Maple with an expansion ridge or sometimes it’s call “crush” bead. It holds each board apart .013 of an inch. This allows for some expansion, without board cupping. In areas of the country with wide swings in humidity expansion rows are necessary. In some cases as often as every 18 inches. It just depends upon where you are installing the gym floor. This is a great question, but it doesn’t have one definitive answer. It depends upon location AND upon the facility.
Actually Glen Mars designed the Ryder back in the late 70's.
I learned on an old 12inch drum!!! these new kids wouldn't be able to out paper on.
Getting these old gals dressed is a struggle!!😂
So I have a ? For u I have an old American 12in split drum sander and while sanding the floor I noticed if I drop the drum all the way down it seems to bog down or lose power and want to die.. do u know what could cause that
I am only guessing here Joesph, but start with electrical connections. Check your cord plugs for loose wires, if the are all good, check the wire nuts in the handle where the cord plugs into the machine!
Do you have a video on how you set up the dispense barrel?
Check out “Applying finish with the Zehnder Barrel 2”
I have a question on the bleacher casters. What should have the janitor dont to prevent the build up with adding another coat? I have a baby grand panio on my floors and i really dont want to tip it on its side to take it out. Is there a way i can add a coat without taking my 3 legged panio on casters out of the room? It lools like a symilar situation to be bleachers.
Hey Mitch, we have recoated rooms with grand piano’s in them. We usually just get under the piano with a paint pad and apply the finish to the floor working around the legs. This usually is less work than trying to move the Grand Piano!
@@WyomingWoodFloors awsome! This great to know I wasn't sure if I could go around the legs and not do under them or not! Have a great day I enjoy your videos!
