Absolute classic david! You are really digging out some nuggets now! Not the most “modern” of lyrics but always to be taken with a large pinch of salt. And it brings a smile to my face listening to the fantastic version sung in the Blues Brothers movie….
Haha thanks- although I did this in class at City Lit this week and it went down a treat with everyone agreeing that the lyrics are ironic. Tammy I think claimed that there was no double reading required, but I’d like to think it was a bit tongue in cheek. Anyway, that’s certainly the case with me singing it!
Hi David you’re a great tutor! Could you look at “Devon Brigade” by Police Dog Hogan. Please I’m struggling to get the fingering right. I think he’s playing capo 7 key C ?
Thank you ☺️ I don't know it, but just listening now. Sounds right up my street, so maybe I'll have a go.
Right then, I've tabbed out the intro, which should give you a good idea of how the rest goes. And yep, standard tuning, capo at the 7th fret. Drop me a line via dalstondavid.com and I'll send you the PDF. If the song were better known, it would definitely be the sort of thing I'd like to cover and would make a great subject for a song video, but I could lose a useful afternoon transcribing it all out. I've had a look on their channel @policedoghogan6512 and they're quite a small outfit, so maybe they'd send you the whole thing if they have it tabbed out? Lovely song and really nicely produced.
I watched his early recordings he flicks the G,B and high E strings
Thanks-good spot! 😊
I am always dazzled by your options of fretting the chords, David, though I am not learning all the songs you are teaching. Learned a lot just by watching your tutorials. Thank you!
Thanks! Getting to grips with barre chords is a great way to feel more confident with alternative shapes up the neck 😊 let me know if there’s anything you’d especially like to see covered in a video
So true! I spent a year practicing barre chords and are now comfortable with them. Knowing them gives you options. Your recent tutorial, I Can See Clearly Now, is an example: its chorus, F C F A... With A chord, I now simply slide up the neck to play barre chord A as practice. It also has the kind of voicing that suits soaring spirit of the chorus. Not to say that it transitions smoothly to the "Ah...." part, all barre chords (I still have problems with barred C or B, playing with ring finger to double barre, so to speak. They don't sound clear yet). Appreciate your asking what I like to see covered, but I will refrain from it as there are so many on my wish list and I am easily distracted. From your tutorials, I already have a lot to learn and practice in the rhythm department to add variety to strumming (like the way you play I Can See Clearly Now, Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow, etc.). Thank you! I will always clear your new videos when I am notified.
Oops! Just notice a typo in my reply above. Meant to say "I will always hear (actually, watch) your new video when I am notified."
Thank you for a wonderful lesson. Really appreciated
My pleasure! 😊
It's basically the 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' solos progression.
Pretty similar, yep!
Thanks David. Another very helpful video. That’s a really nice sounding Yamaha you are playing. What model is it?
Thanks, glad you noticed my new guitar 😊 it was my Christmas present to myself, a Yamaha LL-16M, the mahogany version. It's lovely, still getting used to it after the slightly narrower strings and shorter scale length of the old FGs I play. Feels like a proper grown-up guitar and it's loud without being boomy. Looking forward to finding out what I can do with it. Currently it's in a Nick Drake tuning for a video, and it's sounding lovely.
@ David, if you don’t mind a suggestion - why don’t you list all your guitars (with a brief synopsis on how they sound/play) for your communities page? We all love guitars, after all. I would be interested in what you make of the built-in electronics on your new Yamaha.
thank you !
You're welcome, glad you enjoyed it 😊
As a (original) Fleetwood Mac fan, I really like this version of this fantastic song, thank you!
Cheers, Richard! Indeed a brilliant song. My wife once had to ask Peter Green to get out of the way when she was wheeling a trolley. Her great claim to fame.
A good lesson.
Thanks, Steven, is such a brilliant song. Glad you enjoyed it!
Oh yes! Outstanding instruction! Thank You!
Thanks ☺️ a brilliant song by a magnificent musician ⭐

Wow !! Very nice
Ah thanks Suzie, you’re always so supportive. I have to admit I think this whole video is a bit too long and involved, but if you’ve enjoyed it then I’m delighted 😁
Great song. Left field choice for solo acoustic but why not. Well done
Haha thanks it’s a bit bonkers 😝 but “kind of” works I guess

Merci beaucoup pour vos explications précises et très complètes
Merci à vous 😊 une très jolie chanson que j'ai vraiment aimé jouer
Greetings from Oregon- wonderful instructor you are, clearly presented, thanks. A guitar student I have wants to learn this, you just saved me lots of time doing a n arrangement! Happy new year to you, David.
Thanks, I’m delighted you’re finding the channel useful. Don’t be shy in using the Super Thanks, especially if these resources are helping you professionally 😊 Let me know if there’s anything else you’d like to see. Best wishes from London!
Beautiful tutorial. Thank you.
Well thank you 😊 such a lovely song
Who will remember the songs of today in 40 years ??? That's music u playing brp rwspect
Thanks, these old songs are on us like dust thick enough to write your name in
great choice of song! one of my favourites - do you like the bangla desh version?
With George? Yes, great energy.
Still at the strumming stage in my attempts to to play this song, but I like the way you combine this with a finger picking lesson. Lots of work required to play it as fluently as you do. Thanks for the time you've spent on this lesson! Two other songs you might like to cover are Clay Pigeons (Blaise Foley) & Bob Dylan's Buckets of Rain.
Hi, yes Bucket of Rain is great-all the songs on Blood on the Tracks were originally written in Open D, and they have a very similar feel under the fingers. If you're interested, I produced the matching folio of the album, which contains the full tab: www.musicroom.com/bob-dylan-blood-on-the-tracks-bob-dylan-melody-musam1012957?. Thanks for the suggestions!
Vielen vielen Dank, sehr gute Arbeit! Habe den song mit deiner Lektion gelernt.
Das freut mich, danke gleichfalls für den Nachricht. Ein schönes Lied. Viel Spaß damit! 😊
What a great lesson 👏 👏👏👏
Thanks ☺️ such a brilliant song, glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you! I have really wanted to learn this. Your teaching pace is perfect, along with a good view of your hands, and chord visuals.
Thanks for taking the time to comment 😊 once you get the picking sorted it’s pretty do-able-but it’s quite quick!
Hi David. Didn’t Paul Simon originally compose this on guitar?- there is a version of him playing this on guitar out there somewhere!
Hi, that sounds quite likely. I guess I just think of this as a large-scale work, but in reality I suppose it shouldn’t be a surprise that it works so well on guitar!
Really cutting the work out for me David! And am having so much fun playing the beautiful jazzy White Christmas, thank you so much! The best of the new year to you and yours maestro! Dec
Cheers, Dec. I love being able to make a playable guitar version of songs that feel ‘bigger’. I’m delighted you’re getting some mileage out of the White Christmas jazz shenanigans 😀
🎼🎼🎼love this song..... congratulations 🎼🎼🎼
Thank you!
I’ve been looking at acoustic guitar videos on RUclips for years. I edited an acoustic guitar magazine for about a decade, where I worked with excellent transcribers. You are the boss. It’s late, but it’s a shame that as the film is released a Dylan book with note-for-note tabs of his best guitar work through Bringing it all Back Home - Girl From the North Country, One Too Many Mornings, Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right Ma, Hollis Brown (short song but of course worth learning), Tomorrow Is a Long Time, Restless Farewell, Corrina, Corrina, etc. - maybe something from Blood on the Tracks, Bangladesh. When I was 15, such a book would’ve been my bible. And a real Richard Thompson book. His three-book set doesn’t have all that many tabs, and costs a fortune. Or a collection of British classics, Jansch, Renbourn, Graham, Thompson, etc. Perhaps not; your lesson has gotten me hypomanic. Thank you again for your great work.
Many thanks for your kind comments, Harold. You may know about my Dylan Complete www.halleonard.com/product/293667/bob-dylan-complete , which has *bits* of tab, mainly representative picking or strumming patterns for each song. I also did some matching folios, including Blood on the Tracks, which has proper transcriptions of the guitar parts in tab www.musicroom.com/bob-dylan-blood-on-the-tracks-bob-dylan-melody-musam1012957? You might like that if you're into open D 😊 and of course many of the songs are remarkably similar in terms of the guitar part. Music publishing is in a funny place at the moment, demand for traditional printed sheet music has almost died out but of course there are lots of avenues for online publishing, which I'm just dipping my toe into-so you might see some printable PDFs from me in the coming months. Feel free to get in touch at dalstondavid.com if you'd like to chat further, it's always great to talk to others. Best wishes for the holidays and 2025.
@@dalstondavid I will. Thank you for your detailed reply. A good friend and former co-worker is editor at Acoustic Guitar magazine. I wonder if that can be of help top you.., Not just the transcriptions, but your explications of what's going on.
Thanks. Love your tutorials. Great song . Backing track a great bonus to play to.
Very kind and thoughtful, thank you. I’m glad you’re able to get something out of these videos-I’m delighted to hear that you’re finding the backing tracks useful too! 😊
Thanks for posting . Very much appreciated..
My pleasure, Paul. A surprisingly ingenious little song 😀
Brilliant thank you
You're very welcome ☺️ glad you found it useful. Great song!
Wow, you work these out so perfectly. Many thanks. Best tutor I've found on the web.
Thank you. I have fun getting to the bottom of these songs on guitar or finding a workable solution. Always a bit of a voyage, and for this one it turned out be a real surprise! 😀
Great lesson. Not too difficult to play. My question is how did you harmonize the melody? How did you figure out what chord to play for each melody note?
Thanks, @dennisferrell3662-that's a question that requires a detailed answer, but in essence you need to identify the key areas (the key and any obvious shifts in the harmony, like the C9 that takes us to the F) and then it helps to have a reasonable grasp of likely chord sequences (the Fmaj7 to Bb13 is variation on a "backdoor ii-V"; the Eb7 is a tritone substitution for the vi chord, etc) that will allow you to cover the melody with stylistic elements that work. That's not a very clear answer, but basically it comes down to little mini formulas that you find all over the place in this sort of song, and if you know them, or enough of them, you can put them to good use. The Cdim at the start is usually harmonised with B7, which is a bit clunky, but has most notes in common with Cdim. Diminished chords are your friend with this kind of thing. Anyway, your question gives me an idea for a series of videos and I might start to put some ideas together for that, so thank you!
@@dalstondavid Very helpful answer! Thinking of it in terms of “little formulas” seems like a good approach. How and when to use substitution is something I still struggle with, but thinking of it as “can a substitution help me get the melody note?” Is helpful. I would love a series of tutorials on this topic! Thanks and Merry Christmas!
Another excellent lesson. I will try to learn this as it's a great version and I'd love to be able to play it at an open mic night
Ah that's great, Colin, yes it's a really good song for an open mic and you can hear it can sound quite effective on a guitar. Good luck with it!
bravo !!!
Thanks! 😊
Hi David, Looked for someone like you for many years, so relaxed and you say just enough, not to much what others mostly do.
Thank you so much, I'm really glad you find it useful. This is just a brilliant song. Happy holidays! 😊
Thanks David mate... just what I wanted... Merry Christmas from 'Down Under'....🥳🥳🥳
Haha thanks! No Christmas is complete without a bit of Jingle Bells! 🔔🎄❄️
Merry xmas
And to you!
Thank you for this tutorial. It has given me impetus to move on to a new level of playing. Much appreciated.
Well that's what it's all about, my absolute pleasure! ☺️
Thank you for this David. Its a great help as i want to move on in my playing. I'm struggling with the timing and the upstrokes, but the slow speed settings on RUclips is so helpful here! Thank you once again.
Thanks Ian. Glad it's coming together!
Merry Christmas david! An absolute classic-this one I can play and your tutorial is a helpful reminder😊 . Your inner Bing Crosby comes through nicely here! Yes by the way if you have time to put up the jazz chords that would be fun. Thanks so much again for your wonderful lessons and sharing your love of music. Much appreciated!
Thanks John, Bing’s pleased 😀 I’ve just finished editing a jazz style version-I’ll put it up over the weekend
Merry Christmas. Thanks for all your work breaking down songs for us all year
Thanks, Chris! It's been a lot of fun ☺️ happy holidays!
That was a fantastic lesson. Very detailed. I'm not able to finger pick well, but there's still so much information for anyone to learn the basics of the song. Thanks for putting in the time for all of us wann be guitar players.
Thanks, Rick. My pleasure! Another Carole King classic 😊
