If my partners parents purchase a house for us and we buy it at a reduced cost off them. Let’s say there’s a 100k in the difference is that treated as a taxed free gift of 100k or would we pay tax.

I really identified with Neil's story. I am a 43 year old woman who is still at home with my parents having spent my 20s and early 30s living away from home. For many reasons, including my parents needing financial help, I am with my parents while trying to build up my savings so that I can buy a property for myself - I earn a very good income and have a great career. Renting is unrealistic, given the expense as a single person paying to rent alone is just completely ridiculous. My mental health is really suffering at home, despite the fact that I love my parents, but I feel like I have put my life on hold. The problem with purchasing alone is you are limited in choice and ability to negotiate on price. I can buy, but I cannot find something affordable which is reasonably close to my family home. Well done Neil for sharing your story - there is a stigma associated with being at home with parents as an adult but its so nuanced and in the current housing market in Ireland, it is likely more common than people like to admit. I don't tell anyone where I live, Im too ashamed.

At least she can see her money in the bank accounts....if she starts to invest in stocks or pension funds she better prepare for loosing everything....its a mighty possibility....

Stay out of the stock market...ya might as well go down to paddy power at least you losr your own money....if you happen to win on a stock ...you'll end up paying tax somewhere on it....

Maybe the top companys won't go bust...but pension schemes have...and i know people who have lost fortunes...if their money was in savings in the bank....they wouldn't be broke today....

This was good but it’s very Irish to be indirect and not as specific questions on income , net wealh, assets etc . The wrap up was “congrats for all you’ve achieved “ but the whole podcast was abstract . I get people not being comfortable with disclosing . But there would be so much more value in these podcasts to listeners if you had people on who’d disclose their salaries , monthly savings , outgoings , assets , net wealth etc . Thank you 😊❤
