Bit of everything!
I think either via made a mistake by only getting 5 car venture sets and needed more room for the holidays, or they're just trying to keep the ventures off of CN track until they fix the issue they're having.

What a nice, non fouled charger horn. very hard to find nowadays since iirc these horns are made of plastic which fouls very easily

It goes on railway crossings slowly.
That's the temporary measure for <32-axle Charger/Venture sets to properly shunt/trigger presence detection. Hopefully this is temporary. CN has yet to publish evidence this is actually an issue in Canada yet iirc...

lol no. I have a good mic when I remember to bring it. It's just a matter of setting the gain low enough when I record so it doesn't peak like this. I can raise the quiet bits in post. You need to experience this up close though. It's super loud and discordant!

The Siemens Charger that VIA Rail has looks significantly different than the ones Amtrak has, especially the front and cab design. Does anyone know why? Amtrak’s Chargers have a front that is flatter towards the bottom while VIA’s are sloped nicely.
The design considerations for running in Canadian conditions and regulations were different. The nose is the only really different part from what I know - the internals are much the same. Snow was a major factor. Besides that, I don't know specifics.

I like seeing Via trains at Weston (or Bloor) because I can pretend there are more than just 3 stations where Via trains have level boarding

Those inward facing cameras, on the fireman’s side and the in-charge engineer’s side as well, must be disconcerting to say the least for those crew members.
To my knowledge those are only for when there is an incident such as a crash.

Kinda... The locomotive is the same model that Amtrak uses with some modifications, but the coaches aren't used by Amtrak.
The Kingston sub is pretty smooth. The Chatham sub looks pretty rough.

The CN Kingston sub is actually pretty smooth nowadays, the Via Smiths Falls sub is actually the bumpiest on my typical Toronto - Ottawa trips. The Siemens trains ride much smoother than any other trains on the line, especially the HEP cars.
It can be, but if you ride in a HEP-I car 5 every once in a while there's this BANG and the car rocks like crazy because of a bad transition
Shame about the low level platforms
Yeah, that's still a significant issue. Even Union is low platform still. The level boarding is really nice at platform 1 at Ottawa station, and I wish they had the budget and will to update their platforms beyond what they're doing already.
It is infuriating that Via is rebuilding the platforms at London station still at low level. They are on a siding that is never used by freight trains
These new VIA Siemens trains look great. Now we need to have them stop taking the sidings while slow moving CN freight trains pass with the right of way! Hardly 21st Century. Next, VIA needs to get badly overdue new trains for their Toronto-Vancouver and Montreal-Halifax routes. Thanks for posting.
You may be interested in Transport Action Canada! Also, the long distance fleet is being replaced - it was announced in the last budget and confirmed very recently.
@@tiernanstrainsI’ve heard that VIA is watching Amtrak’s long distance replacement to see if they could piggyback.

@@tiernanstrains They probably will. Manufactures are willing to accommodate the needs of the customer.
From my experience between Toronto and Ottawa, Metrolinx (GO Transit) is actually far worse than CN for causing delays to Via. Metrolinx will often hold a Via train at the end of the express track to allow a local GO train it had already overtaken to cut in front, causing the Via train to also then be stuck behind a slow local train

Better horn than a K5CA-LS
This isn’t evrn a real K5CA-LS, it's worse: it's a Kockums Sonics "5 chime CA" horn, a European horn designed to imitate the K5CA-LS.

These days yes, but not when I recorded that. Unless there's a breakdown, all trains from Ottawa to Quebec City via Montreal are ventures.
