Japanese Guitar History - The story of Matsumoku and Aria Pro II
Просмотров 56 тыс.3 года назад
In this video I am going past the history of Aria Pro II and Matsumoku, a vintage guitar brand and Japanese guitar factory with a bit of a legendary status on forums. The story is a bit romanticized, I believe, but nevertheless interesting. There's a bit of me playing an Aria Pro II PE 1500, the top of the line model in the late 70s/early 80s. I'd like to thank my dad for buying the guitar 10 y...

Hi Sander👋thank you for making this video. I recently installed Jamulus client & server. One of the bands I play in is approx. 2000kms away and we are experimenting with this application. I setup the server without modifying my router settings and we managed to connect albeit around 20ms latency which is not ideal. My question is that given you made this video some years ago, is the latest version of the Jamulus server contingent on having these router settings implemented given it seems to work? In your opinion would these router setting improve latency? Thanks again, Tony 👍
That peavey deuce sounds great
Wonderful !!!..I own a PE 460 with the two bolts and brass plate on the set neck. I believe this was a prototype . Beautiful neck
Thank you for the background info. Very informative. I am interested in buying an Aria Pro II 70's RB-700N Rickenbacker copy. I used to own an Aria Pro II PE-DLX Sunburst back in '80 and really liked it.
Hey there, nice video and a very good in-depht knowledge. I got an Aria Diamond 1802t, the early model (the Diamond 1802t was built between 1963 and 1971) with two triangular shaped singlecoils and black plastick Aria Diamond sign with little plastic diamond. It's hell of a guitar and my alltime player, very versatile. It needed some recondition and a new nut when I bought it for 70€ from a nice elderly lady which husband it once belonged to. Just some equipment talk 😂 Thanks for the video! 🌞 Jens
Okay so where was takamimi in all this
Well, that was bloody fascinating. Always been a fan of Japanese guitars.
I have a rare Japanese bass. It was part of the lawsuit with Fender. So it is a Japanese Fender with no markings or numbers. They stopped making them after the lawsuit. Very rare guitar. I also have a Les Paul Epiphone, created by Slash. Made in China. Great guitar. #WEROCK
Hello from Germany, I just acquired a Shiro Sprinter (Strat type guitar) and searching for information. Some sources mention that they are connected to Shiro Arai just before he started with Aria brand name....do you have any more information on Shiro guitars?
Your opening Japanese title is written backwards. It says Guitar's History Japan, not Japanese guitar history. Write it as 日本のギター歴史
I remember playing a Tokai Superstrat in the late 80s and it was by far the best guitar I'd ever played at the time. It was and H-S-S and the first humbucking guitar I ever played. Sounded way better than my Ninja Nighthawk (plywood I think) 3 single coils and a horrible attempt at a locking floating trem. That guitar had to have the trem fixed to stay in tune as in fixed with a block behind the trem in the body so it would not move. The Tokai was a revelation. Luv and Peace.

Very,very bad demo!
It's crazy to think made in Japan used to equal junk...like that's so old it ain't even boomer...boomers think it's old! 😂 Now made in China can be high quality.
I have my dad's Japanese EB-3 copy, bought in 1971 at a shop in Bellingham, WA so some sailor likely brought it over. It's not branded other than "made in Japan", so I assume it's a Matsumoku. It has the proprietary Greco muffle bridge and slot-head headstock also.
Where does the subbrand Blitz by Aria come in?
Thank you! Is there an updated version of this video?
I have Yamaha SL500 Les Paul style guitar from the serial # seems it was built 1980, Mahogany/Maple body, 3 piece Maple neck, Rosewood fret board, real nice guitar. It was built for the domestic Japanese market but I had it shipped to me. I don't know which factory built it? Impossible to know but it's a real nice guitar. Thx for the history !
That's plug and play in 2024 lol
Aria Pro II has also been producing guitars in Japan for quite some time now. The PE-R80, PE-R100 and PE-1500RI models are available for purchase. They all seem to be faithful reproductions of the old Aria Pro II guitars. I don't know the price, but it's probably cheaper than Gibson.
Love these guitars Im restoring a Aria Pro II MS. Its a beast.
I've tried JamKazam. If I understand correctly, its for live jamming (which I did) and addresses the latency/distance issue by measuring the latency of everyone from a central point and synching from there so everyone can play together. I had to do a lot to reduce my own latency to meet the requirements. It does work, though. But the experience is only as good as the weakest link. If someone has really high latency, it affects everyone else. You can do live concerts on it though, and if you're trying for a live experience, it's the best thing I've seen, even with its development issues. It's a good practice tool, especially for a band that want's to practice remotely and they're not too far geographically.
have you had any success using a keyboard and Cubase VST instrument as the source? seems a bit stupid to use the piano and input into a soundcard and do it that way. Any tutorials for VST use?
Great video.
I have an Aria Custom Shop SB-025 Rosewood from 93 with the old Bart PUs and TCT, Rosewood fb and top/back body laminates, and even has coil switches for each pickup. The most unique Super Bass Ive found. It outclasses any Warwick, Stingray, Fender that Ive played. The only equal is the NS Design CR5. Makes me want to put a piezo in this SB025
GREAT WORK! THANKS!
Really like your videos mate. Shit is the shit, you've not posted in 2 years but you're definitely my type of friend. Loved your aria history video too. Especially your grandads guitar, my dream guitar, some modern, some not. I own 3 Arias, TA100, Sandpiper ( only modern one I like) and 80's SB1000 Hope you're doing okay x
Thanks man! Appreciate the words. Got some different priorities and had more time during COVID haha. I’ve been thinking a oh making some new videos, but would be a different format, or something that’s quicker to edit because it takes forever to get this stuff done 🙃
I have an Aria Pro II Stratocaster and I'm very satisfied. This sound is unique!
Great Craftsmanship, i prefer MIJ
What do you know about the Aria TA-80 hollow body guitar
I have a matsumoku Epiphone Emperor archtop, looking like an L5 with ebony parts. It has a Kalamazoo label inside. Huge pots like you see in vintage Les Pauls
I have a matsumoku build Aria Pro II Gibson Ripper copy c. 1977. From what I can tell is it the PE-200 Bass from 1977 but the lettering on the headstock is different. I said I would never sell it but sadly it's up for sale right now 😥. I really love this bass! BTW, I found it in a pawnshop in 1995 for not much money.
Hello, Sander. I have an Aria Pro II “Strikin’ Sound” strat copy and saw that its neck plate has an engraving which says Matsumoku and probably a serial number. Is there a way to know what year was this guitar made? I wanna know more about this guitar
Nice video, I have a Westone Pantera x790 bass and a Westone Pantera x350 guitar. I own and play the bass for years, it looks and sounds great and it has never let me down. Same for the guitar that I found in the music store in my hometown of all places, it was not cheap for a second hand guitar but I had to have it.
I want both from you! Always wanted the Pantera X790 bass and the X350.
@@sullie35 sorry, they are not for sale and they are my main instruments.
@@janenmarelia I understand that.
I have 2 Westones. A 1984 dynasty and a 1985 strat style copy. But have coil taps and reverse phase. They are better quality than the crap that gets spewed out nowadays 😢
I bouth a Diamond 12 strings Rickenbaker replica and for what i know it’s from the 1970 era but i can’t be sure, there is no tag inside the guitar. Where can i look for information ?
I have an Aria Pro II PE-R80. I think it's an '82. Great video! Thank you for this.
I have a Westone Thunder 1A that I bought brand new at A1 music in Manchester around 1983. It's still a great guitar, you can feel the quality. Nice video, thankyou!
My first decent guitar was a Matsumoku "Kimbara" Les Paul copy - I still have it 48 years later, plus various other Matsumoku guitars. I also have a lovely second-hand 1980s Aria Pro II TS-800.
I have a Vantage VW 150 guitar. Can you tell us about Vantage guitars?
Do a follow up on Aria guitars from Korea! I recently picked up an Aria TA-80 from 2007, made in the Samick factory. It's (in my humble opinion) a fantastic quality instrument. I'd love to know how more about it, especially whether Aria would have had it's people involved in the design (which I believe is very similar to Japanese made Aria archtops) and quality control process.
I just picked-up a nice 1974 Greco JB420S. Matsumoku-made. Has the three-pice neck that you mentioned (and it is freakin' awesome). Also have one of the last Aria Pro II made in 1986. Two of the nicest in my "JV" arsenal.
What’s the relation between Aria and Legend?
Good video. Informative while not boring. Well done.
I love my Area pro ii played for my church many years but now my health is bad gave it to my son you know can't take it with you
Hello, Ariana is the first name of company or is a low range division brand in the 70s? Thanks
Do you know anything about Jaxon guitars
I Wish I Still Had my Kawi, Aria, Kramer Axes TODAY!!
I have a 64? Teisco VN2 Baritone. I also have an unidentified ThruBody that looks very Matsumoku. It's excellent quality and has lots of the hallmarks. We'll see. Luv and Peace.
This is a great video, thanks for all the info, Eastman Strings out of Beijing China have been going through a somewhat similar thing for the past 10 or so years, I have an acoustic guitar of theirs which I feel privileged to own, hand crafted of outstanding woods and workmanship, sounds and plays so nice, they're in partnership with Bourgeois Guitars (renowned boutique maker) of the U.S now, their instruments rival anything produced anywhere in the world.
Eastman guitars are shockingly great, I remember trying to sell a (relatively inexpensive) Martin to my local shop and the owner argued it wouldn’t sell because it would be going up against Eastman’s at lower prices and sound worse by comparison. After I tried one or two I had to agree. (Happily I sold it for a good price on kijiji to some guy who mostly just seemed to be pursuing the Martin name.)
