Rupert's Story
This is my brother's story. He suffered a severe head injury after a serious car accident in 1997. He is my inspiration for the eyes alight appeal as part of the Brain Injury Rehabilitation Trust. We hope to give people like Rupert something to smile about again, the chance to fulfil dreams and to literally light up faces. Rupert's story is one of many, please go to www.birt.co.uk/eyesalight and together one step at a time, we can make brain injury rehabilitation a little bit brighter. Help us to make eyes alight. Thank you

What a wonderful story of love and care. May God bless Rupert and all those who look after him and care for him.
Prior to lockdown I joined a wind band where Rupert is the principal horn player and have been blown away by his beautiful sound and enthusiasm for every piece we take out of our folders (especially if there's a horn solo :-) ) I knew nothing of his story until very recently, but I know that music is very often the vehicle which transports us through difficult and very challenging times. Whatever his difficulties, Rupert does not seem to be 'challenged' by music, it seems to 'light him up' :-)
I’m watching Rupert story after talking to him this morning...I see Rupert on a regular basis and although he doesn’t remember me he always greets me with his infectious smile...What an amazingly strong man and a very brave family. 😊
He looks like SO much fun!
Inspiring story and beautiful family. Rupert (Roops, like Izzy calls him on instagram) seems like a very funny lad, and honesly he seems to have had a great recover, certainly thanks to the Brain Injury Rehab trust and his beautiful family. This story needs to be told because it gives so much hope for humanity :D
I used to be the postman for Kent House Rupert always brightens my day when I bump into him on the Wendover rd he’s so bright and positive always cheers me up x
I have known Rupert since attending Jigsaw through Anne Gee they are boy friend and girl friend. His big infectious smile melts our hearts.
he's a caring person, Izzy. I can't stop smiling when I see him, and my tears, oh my tears. send my love to him, Izzy.
Izzy, A group of us from Cisco Systems went to Kent House yesterday and were very fortunate to meet your beautiful brother and hear this very touching story. The staff were great and we spent the day decorating a couple of rooms. Rupert was kind enough to share his room and tell us some great stories. I have already shared this video with my closest friends and family. The idea is a great one and wishing you all the support
This is amazing. I have a brother that had been through the very same story. Car accident, he was older and driving it, caused a difused (all over) brain injury.. it has been three years now, so many emotions that comes trough our mind, isn't it? If any of you need a friend to chat, just let me know. Congratulations for the needed strengh and loving family. best regards for all the family
He is always laughing and smiling so much! Such an inspiring person! That's an awesome idea💜
This is such a special video. 😘
This is such an amazing idea and an incredible story. I have just started working with people with acquired brain injury and, I know what you mean about their eyes lighting up. It is so lovely to see a smile on their face when they have done something they enjoy. Keep up the good work. :-)
Beautiful video!! 💚
Such a touching story Izzy! Very inspirational! Rupert and the rest of your family are all incredibly lucky to have you! Your such an inspiration to so many people! This video is amazing to get the story across! P.S I live near some of the places filmed in this video
I raised our £236 for the Disabilities trust <3xx
Im not crying what you talking about
oh my, this video brings tears to my eyes, after meeting rupert yesterday i just want to see him again, he makes me so happy, he was so happy and cheeky, and now i just want to raise as much money as possible for eyes alight, and BIRT, and i won't stop *so emotional* xx
This is undoubtedly my favourite charity, and I promise that when I can I will donate my spare money to this appeal. I am in awe of the way your family have coped with this tragedy and with how lucky Rupert is to have parents and Siblings like you, Izzy. Thank you for enlightening me to this incredible cause, and I wish you incredible luck with the appeal xx
i would love to do some kind of event to help raise money for eyes alight.. its an amazing cause. i dont quite know what kind of event i should do, but i know i have to do something to help.
Rupert and my daughter, Joanna Urbanowicz, started school together at St Nicholas in Harpenden. I can still see this bright, cheeky and lively little boy who never stopped smiling. The video still shows Rupert as I remember him. X
Just read ruperts story in the paper such an inspiring story fair play to you izzy your a credit to your brother and to everyone you're helping
You, Rupert and your whole family have inspired me... you have all been really strong and supportive... without all of you I don't think Rupert would be the man he is today... Eyesalight has inspired me to be more charitable and give people the chances that they are not able to have... even though he does have the brain injury you would never had noticed... he still seems the happy, chirpy lad he seemed he was as a young lad... I hope he gets better and you all have a long happy life together x
I'm touched. My Granddad also suffered from a head injury which resulted in brain damage. He's now unable to walk and has trouble remembering things. I'm just thankful that he was able to live a long and happy life and is still with us today x
Omg so this is Izzy Johnston (Judd)'s brother? aww this is so inspirational!
I did a solo talk on McFly and slowly introuduced Eyesalight and I think it went well. Next time it'll just be on Eyesalight and I hope I'll show people this story and let them know more about it and show them what it does and what happened to Rupert. He's a true hero xx
Crying so much! Rupert seems like a beautiful person! Brain injurys are so tragic to families and I can totally see that yous appreciate so much that yous atleast still have such an amazing person around!
wow this is so amazing i guess you hear about car crashes and brain injuries a lot but don't really get to see what impacts it has on those suffering not just the person involved but all those around them its a really inspirational story and lovely to see Rupert with a massive smile on his face defiantly donating some of my charity money to this charity this year every little helps.
so inspiring!x watched this before and just had to again after watching harry and Izzy raise lots of money for eyes alight on all star Mr and Mrs- amazing;)xx
The one person that has ''disliked' this video should go to Kent House and visit everyone there who has had brain injuries, then think again about why they 'disliked' it. How dare they.
I'm in charge of fundraising for my house at school, and so it's my job of choosing a charity to support... so I chose BIRT and the Eyes Alight appeal. So inspiring x
@IzzyEyesALight & #Rupert *HUGS* :) #EyesALight #FF #RT

Thank you so much. Gill [Rupert's Mum]
Very moving. Good luck in your continuing efforts. Just about to organise a donation. Thank you.I met your Mum, Guy and Magnus several years ago at a Nieman-Pick fundraiser in Brighton. What a lovely family. Rupert is lucky to have you all.
Intensely moved by this video and wish you all the greatest success in the fundraising. Derek & Wendy Watkins
My friend Tom P.S. is raising money for Eyes Alight and sent me this link. What an effect this had on me. I'm organising and performing in a big Cancer charity concert in London on May 25th, but after that I'd like to start planning an event for you, if that would be okay. Perhaps you could privately message me to discuss...
Rupert is an inspiration for anybody who has had a brain injury. Look how happy and smiley he is. He is proof that life can still be good after something so devasting. And Izzy-you're incredible. This charity is amazing and will help so many people. You're such a lovely person and dedicating so much time to this charity, and getting it established and well known must be so difficult- you're doing really well with it. I wish all the best for you and Rupert (and everybody at eyes alight) xxx
