Hey guys, interesting topic. I don’t know much about packaging but this video came up in my feed and caught my eye. One little recommendation….you might want to lead off the video by introducing the topic and defining “EPR” for people who are new to the subject. I had to listen/skip around for the first 5 minutes of bantering before you even introduced the topic, and then I still didn’t know what EPR was until I looked it up. I almost left. I am interested in learning about a new topic from people who seem to know about it. I’m not interested in watching two guys hang out. Thanks for making this video and sparking my awareness of EPR. Cheers.

We are there now however the market can get in the way,...We as an industry have worked on and developed "compostable" plastic pouches for the Cannabis industry. No one is more in on Sustainability than Cannabis producers however - those compostable pouches cost 3 times as much as a standard plastic pouch. Guess which one they went with - all of the ones I know about selected the cheapest non sustainable option. It will probably take another 5-10 years before the volume produced increases to the point that the cost comes down. Then, they may be seriously considered. Same thing happened when we introduced Recycled content to paper 40 years ago. Everyone was excited at first but it took several years before it came down in price and anyone could justify the extra spend of money. It will eventually happen but it will take a movement and many consumers are more focused on cheaper prices right now unfortunately :(

It may be but cost is getting in the way. As an industry, we developed a compostable pouch - the problem is that it is 3 times the price of standard pouches. As much as we talk, as much as our clients talked about sustainability, when they see the cost, they are reluctant to spend the additional money. In fact, they are working to reduce costs. This is similar to when we started with recycled content 40 years ago - we need the costs of material to come down or for it to become the standard product so that it is produced in volumes. This will take 10 years before it's ubiquitous

Tossing in my two cents. Another reason for these brands not to anything other than a box is shelf space at home. Since the boxes are tall and narrow they don’t take up a lot of space at home, which is great because a lot of people buy multiple brands of cereal. Which means I can first 6 boxes of cereal on top of my fridge somewhat neatly
