Near the beginning of the video there was a creed that was read; the Nicene Creed. It seems (though I am not sure) as though Pastor Brian is claiming that acceptance of this creed is a necessary condition to be a Christian (and perhaps also a necessary condition for salvation). But before I can accept something, I have to understand it. Suppose someone came to me and spoke in another language that I didn't understand. My friend, who speaks that language, turns to me and says, 'so do you believe that?'. I then tell him that I don't know. Why don't I? Because it seems that understanding is a prerequisite for belief. So it seems that before one can have a belief about something, we must understand the meaning about that something. Now, do I understand all of the Nicene Creed? No. Therefore, I don't believe the whole Nicene Creed; I also don't not believe it. I just haven't decided yet on the whole creed. This is because I don't understand the whole creed. If Brian claims that belief in the whole Nicene Creed is a necessary condition for being a Christian (evidence that can incline one to believe that he might be claiming this: 'Christians of all faithful denominations believe this' (time on video 10:55)), then I suppose that I am not a Christian according to Brian's potential claim; even though I claim that God exists and Jesus rose from the grave and so on. There are lots that I don't understand in the creed, but here are two: 1) '...of one being or essence with the Father' (time in video: 9:51). What does that mean? In fact, I am not even sure what that whole slide means. Is it saying that the Father and the Son are identical? That can't be right because orthodox Christianity teaches against that. 2) Also, there is talk of the trinity (this puzzlement might just be a different way of expressing my puzzlement from '1)' above). I don't understand the concept of the trinity. Can that be explained? I appreciate Dr. Brian for his preaching.
