That is what lies behind his reaction. It is one reason Colin does not in fact confide in most of his family--they don't take him seriously, and will likely mock him the more sincere he is. Another reason he adores Penelope, who listens and takes his words seriously. His brothers almost NEVER do this. 07:04 It says a lot about Colin that his fantasies are not really about being a playboy, but rather being a husband. He has already figured out where their home will be. He is already thinking of Penelope as a Bridgerton. He has always been someone eager to commit. Which is one reason he feels comfortable consummating their relationship before the wedding night. 09:45 This is my favorite couple on BRIDGERTON, not least because we've got to see them get to know each other better and deeper for two seasons now. My second favorite is Kate and Anthony, with third a tie between Albion and Phillipa, and with Francesca and John. 11:20 I do love Eloise, but she is so myopic...! And so self-centered! She actually has spent years putting Colin down and now feels insulted when he did not share an intimate part of his life with her to be mocked. Eloise grows up a lot in this season, thank god. 15:45 I agree, Eloise is essentially in the right. She's behaving wrongly, in the service of a genuine truth. Colin needs to know. It is not Eloise's job to tell him. Only to nag Penelope about it. IMHO. Penelope of course has had all her dearest dreams and fantasies come true out of nowhere--and is TERRIFIED it will all vanish. Colin feels the same way, btw.

I do not agree, one of my fave books of the year, just finished powerful, already read reckless. WHY DID SHE LEAVE SUCH A CLIFFHANGER UGHHHH. Yeah my fav series, loved everything about it. I do ynderstand why some people wouldnt like it, becausr its more romance than plot but its written so good the romance had me so invested anyways idk what i’m yapping so

The reason everything is happening "at the flip of a switch" is because this relationship happened in the opposite order than all the other relationships we've seen on this show. Every other couple starts as strangers, who have immediate attraction and chemistry, but then have to grow to know and love each other on a deeper level. But with Colin and Penelope, that deeper love was already there because they've been best friends for years. Colin has always loved and admired Penelope in every way except romantic. The physical attraction and intimacy was simply the last box to be checked, so once his eyes were opened to that, he was 100% in and never looked back. This is the friends to lovers trope. I you're used to other tropes, like enemies to lovers, it can be easy to miss that because it doesn't play out the way you might expect it to. It can be easy to think their love isn't that deep or emotionally grounded yet, because we don't see it developing onscreen, like with every other pair. But that's simply because it's already there, developed over the preceding seasons. This season actually made me retroactively like previous seasons less, making their love seem shallow in comparison. But everyone has their own preferences. This just might not be your cup of tea. Also, Colin wasn't immature or "looking in the wrong places" just because he didn't see Penelope earlier. They've known each other since they were children, and he's about 5 years older than her. So while it's perfectly normal for, say, a 13-year-old girl to have a crush on her best friend's older brother, it would have been super creepy if that 18-year-old boy had seen her the same way. And that's the foundation of their friendship. She's always had a crush on him, and he's always seen her as a little sister. By the time she was old enough for him to see in a romantic way, those roles were firmly established. You can even see him starting to notice her in the first two seasons, but he doesn't know what to do with those feelings, since they don't fit into his mental image of her as sister/friend. Which is why it took something like their kiss to jolt him out of that mindset and let him see her in a different way. There seems to be an unspoken assumption that him not seeing her in a romantic way is insulting, as if he's saying she isn't attractive or good enough for him. But that's simply not true. He doesn't owe it to her to feel the same way, and even if he had never fallen for her, that wouldn't be some moral failing on his part. It's not the popular take on it, but I don't think Colin was *_ever_* embarrassed of Penelope. Even in the infamous scene at the end of season 2. It's understandable that Penelope took his comment that way, and even that we the audience did, since she's our POV character. But that's just our human tendency to assume the worst. We see her do exactly that in episode 1 of this season. He compliments her dress and she assumes he's mocking her. He wants to find somewhere they can talk alone, and she assumes he's ashamed to be seen with her. But we just saw him interrupt a conversation to ask after her, and when they tried to brush her off, he straight up ditched them to go check on her, with no pretense whatsoever. Plus, he approached her in broad daylight at the garden party earlier, and she was the only one he spoke to individually. He is _clearly_ not ashamed to be seen with her. But in her hurt and embarrassment, she jumps right to the worst conclusion, and we jump with her. The same thing happened at the ball in season 2- because what did he actually say? That he wouldn't dream of courting her. The thing is, as heartbreaking as that was for Penelope (and all of us) to hear, that's not actually an insult. There are plenty of reasons you might not consider dating someone that have nothing to do with their worth or desirability. Including the fact that, as far as he knew, Penelope only saw _him_ as a friend. He probably assumed she would have answered that question the exact same way if she'd been there. All the "insult" of his comment comes from the meaning and motives *_we_* read into it. We assume he is denying it so emphatically because he's embarrassed for those men to think he's courting her. Because she's unattractive or undesirable. That he's saving face by putting her down and denying any interest in her. That he's saying the very idea of courting her is laughable. But he doesn't actually say any of that, and none of it fits with what we see from Colin either before or after. First of all, the very fact that Colin doesn't see Penelope as a romantic prospect in the first few seasons means that he hasn't considered her desirability at all, whether positive or negative. While he hasn't gotten to the point of desiring her yet, neither has he thought of her as undesirable. She's simply Pen. She "doesn't count." He would never dream of courting her in the same way he would never dream of courting Eloise or Francesca. Not because she's undesirable, but simply because he doesn't have her in that category at all. Once he does start to see her differently in season 3, we don't see even a hint of that condescension in him. Even in their first coaching session he assumes it should be no problem for her to charm potential suitors… just wave your fan and flutter your lashes and that should be all it takes. His advice to her later in that episode all boils down to "be yourself" because he knows how amazing she is. When she balks at the idea of flirting with a viscount, his only response is to remind her that she is Penelope Featherington. He knows she's a catch a viscount would be lucky to get. It never even crosses his mind that any of these men would be otherwise than thrilled (and lucky) to be with Penelope. And once he finally realizes his own feelings for her, there is no hint of shame or embarrassment over it, even though the stakes are even higher than in season 2. Not only is he much more invested in "fitting in" this season than he was before, but her social status has plummeted after word of their coaching sessions got out. So if he were ever going to worry about the optics of people thinking he's interested in her, this would be the time. And yet it never even crosses his mind. The reason his "friends" aren't at the engagement party is the same reason he pushed past them without a word on his way to talk to Penelope in the last episode... because they were never really his friends at all, just part of the facade he felt he had to put on in the beginning of the season. Once Colin knows what he wants, he goes for it. We don't see a single sign that he would ever let other people's opinions get in the way of that. Consider his low self worth (if you haven't seen that in him, I recommend Sammy Bates' analysis of Colin on her channel... it's one of his defining qualities) and the fact that a great deal of the worth he _does_ feel he has comes from protecting and taking care of Penelope. There isn't a single example in all three seasons of someone insulting or putting Penelope down in front of Colin when he doesn't immediately jump to her defense. He was on a particular high in that regard at that ball in season 2, having confronted Jack Featherington, and saved her family from scandal. So it would be an odd choice for him to completely nullify all the pride and satisfaction of having protected her and her family, in order for a group of men he doesn't even like that much to have a _slightly_ more favorable impression of him. Honestly, if he'd understood their questions as them poking fun at her, I'm sure he would have shut that down immediately. None of this adds up to him being embarrassed of her, even less him actively dissing her. His response this season supports this, too. If he _had_ chosen to throw her under the bus like that, he would certainly feel guilt/shame afterwards. It would probably haunt him. And yet when she brings it up, he doesn't even remember what she's talking about. Penelope completely cut him off after that, and he spent the better part of a year wondering why. And somehow this never occurred to him? Colin is always quick to apologize, no matter how big or small the offense- this is something we see multiple times this season alone. And yet even after a year of the silent treatment from Penelope, he only comes to apologize once she brings it up, as if he only just realized there was something to apologize for. It seems pretty clear to me that it was a misunderstanding. A hurtful mistake, but not an intentional one. Far from being embarrassed of her, he has her on such a high pedestal that he can't quite believe she would want to be with him at all. He has an incredibly high view of her, and a very low view of himself. That's why he never recognized her affections before... he never expected anyone to feel that way about him, so he attributed all her attentions to her just being his friend. That's why he held back after their kiss, because he never suspected that she might return his feelings. He assumed she must prefer Lord Debling, so he held back, wanting her to be happy even as he was dying inside. Even in this episode, after they're engaged and have slept together, he's still worried that she might not really feel the same and might want out of the engagement. He still thinks he's the one who fell first, and he's not convinced that she won't change her mind. Colin's journey wasn't from thinking Penelope was undesirable to realizing that she's beautiful. His journey was from _knowing_ how wonderful and amazing she is and loving her deeply, but simply not seeing her in a romantic light, to having his eyes opened to that other side of her, and realizing that everything he's ever wanted is right here in his best friend. There wasn't far to fall.

I'm a few months late to the party, but I'm loving your reactions! Fwiw, Colin wasn't hesitating because he wasn't sure about his own feelings for Penelope. He's known he's in love for a while now. He was hesitating because ever since their kiss, he's seen her consistently choosing Debling over him. Of course, she's only doing because she's trying to be realistic and move on, but he doesn't know that. He's staying back because he wants her to be happy, but he's dying inside at the thought of her with someone else. That's his struggle. That's also why it took him so long to be straight about his feelings with her, and why he kept giving other reasons for her not to marry him. He has no idea how his confession will be received.

Colin in the show has always liked Penelope. I have known men (male friends, my female friends' crushes and a few men I was interested in) who are clueless they are interested in a woman. Men often actually aren't that great at figuring out their feelings. In Colin's case, his feelings grew over time, Penelope is younger at a time that his feelings would be more clear when she is 19 then in the previous years and he is still trying to find himself and understand that he is worthy of love. He actually had her on a pedestal and adored her. Unlike the book.
