I agree with you that Dany is a top-tier character. When I was reading the books, I always got so excited when I got to a Dany chapter! Petyr Baelish is up there too. He's so good at moving in the shadows and manipulating others to further his interests.

I think it's a shame they changed so much regarding the release of Jaime, and Robb's breaking of his vows, from the books. There, Catelyn is at Riverrun watching her father on his deathbed, she is coming to believe that Arya may be dead, and then she receives the news that Bran and Rickon are dead, her baby boys that she thought safe. I think that context is important for her decision to desperately try to save her remaining children. As for Robb, he has taken a castle in the Lannister territory, but been wounded. The pretty young daughter of the Lord of that castle is helping to nurse him and keep him company. When he receives the news that his baby brothers are dead, they fall into bed together to find comfort. Robb, being Ned's son and Jon's brother, puts her honour before his own by marrying her, rather than leaving her "spoiled" and possibly carrying a bastard child. Both their selfish choices/mistakes are deeply driven by their grief over Bran and Rickon, so I don't really get why the show changed it so that they make their choices before learning about what happened at Winterfell. And I think it's important that Robb becomes an oathbreaker to protect another.
