(As read by me explaining why we are about to play this song) October 9, 2024 Hello, I don’t usually, or ever speak in public but this is not a usual or normal circumstance. I decided to ask the guys to play this upcoming song because my cousin Sam, you may know him as Suitcase Sam or the drummer formerly with String Radio, had shared a song on his Facebook page with a beautiful tribute to his ...

I'm best friends with Rocco, who wrote the song. I saw this and sent it to him. He replied "I'm touched. So heartfelt. I like the strum and his voice."
@@dr2675 thank you. No rehearsal just asked the guys to help. We run an open mic every Wednesday there. My cousin's wife is finally home after two months in the hospital and rehab but she has a very long road ahead of her. This song means a lot to my cousin because it describes exactly what he went through and how his wife stood beside him.
I 2nd that.....
The equivalent to breaking a string for me. Been there done that. No fun but you handled it. Well done. You guys sound great even with the broken head.lol
Thanks. I'm about to upload Basket Case from the same gig. Check it out when it's up.
Dude i just discovered you’re channel. I think it’s so awesome that you have been playing on these for 35 years ! Great beautifull drums
Thank you. I've been very fortunate. They give great pleasure. I worked hard to get them which makes me appreciate them even more.
Looks like Mike Portnoy.
Nice!!!!!
Granstar beautiful kit !!!
on my granstar I don't have the tama sign on the toms, did you add it?? THANKS
The set came with maybe 10 of the black Tama signs. They're have adhesive backing. I set drums up then applied, they're thin embossed metal. Allows them to fit nicely on the radius of the toms. I chose not to put on floor toms, I have the grommet badges facing out.
It's too strange, I don't have these Tama logos at all. on the other hand I have a rack, which I don't like I would like to be able to have a support for 2 toms, easier to move but I can't find it in any store even on ebay@@golfnut033
Yo this was random RUclips I'm looking wooow that's my drummer. Nah I'm seeing shhhhht. Yep it's 3 and damn he's good!!
9 years I'm the 1st to comment ....oooook
Yeah, but your comment was that you were the first to comment which isn't really a comment about the video as much as it's a comment that no one has commented.
Awesome playing!! What kick pedals are you using?
What pedals did you use with this kit?
I'm trying to remember, at that time I'm thinking the pedals that came with the set. Full set of hardware was included, stands, pedals, snare drum too. I use the snare stand to this day on my gigging 4 piece. I wish I could include pictures cause I have them but don't know the name. I did own a King Beat, think that's the name. It had the internal compression spring. I also had 2 of the pedals that the spring connected up on the arm that was adjustable back and forth. Then 2 pedals that were a bit lighter with the footboard that had the "U" bolt for the toe stop. I'm sorry I'm bad with knowing the names and model numbers. Never been one to rattle off model numbers like I was saying my ABC's. There may be a "foot" shot in there, somewhere.
@@golfnut033 Tama’s pedals that were available at the time were the Flexi-Flyer (strap drive), the Camco, and the Pro-Beat.
Not enough cowbell.
wow
wow just audio from the camera it sounds good
I love your vintage Zildjians. They don't make 'em like that anymore. And it goes without saying those Granstars are killer.
Thank you. This video was made before the Zildjian's were vintage. Lol I still have the 18" rock crash, 16" med crash, and the 20" med crash. That 20" is a beast and needed the Vic Firth American Classic Rock stick to make it explode. I also still have the 14" Rock hi hats.
@@golfnut033 Do you still have the Tama Granstar drumset 🥁??
@@SuperheroJunior yes, I still have them. 34 years now. I was gigging with a 4 piece config from 2014 to 2020. After pandemic I got a custom drum set made for me by a good friend that has a drum building business. I'm currently try to set to Tama's back up but with work and weekend gigs it's been difficult. One day, one day. 🤞🙂
I have a set of new beat hats from this Era, still my favorite hihat. I also have a granstar kit, gun metal gray.
Those Zildjian cymbals were not cheap then but would cost a fucking fortune today, cool old kit
I worked at a music store and used the hell out of my 50% teachers discount. Lol But today I gig with a small 4 piece but I have 6 cymbals and a set of hi hats. I did a "what if I had to replace my gig cymbal set up" and the cost is over $2,000. A's 18" rock crash, 18" med thin, 16" custom crash, 22" med ride, 12" meinl trash splash, 8" Dream splash, and 14" A Custom hi hats. I still have the 22" Ping Ride and couple 16" med thin crashes, and a 18" rock crash I got in 1992. I've accumulated quite a bit over the last 43 plus years.
I can't figure out that color to save my ass. I always liked the Heather Metallic and Lipstick Red. I had no idea that they came with sticker logos. I liked the badges as-is better though. I almost bought these instead of my Yamaha's and wish I would have. I ended up having some monster Keller maple shells made for the Yamaha hardware and traded the old shells to my drum shop at the time. Cool kit and great chops! Reminds me of when I used to practice for 8 or more hours a day in the summer of 1989.
Firestorm Red wrap. I also have a Lipstick Red lacquer snare drum, 14 x8 with Freedom lugs. Bought used around 1991 or 92.
Cowbell…? Read my t-shirt…. No problem..☺️
still have my jet black 10 piece granstar
This is like a time capsule of heavenly glory!
His Parents (Hey, what's all that noise!!!!!) Lol
🔥
That sax solo was hot! Second time I played that and you're throwing two extra solos at me! Lol I think I had 2 maybe 3 hours of sleep after before I had to be at work! It was a great night and as always a treat and pleasure to play along side you!
How did you tune?..sounds massive.
Remember I put a little reverb and some EQ on the video, it's a small room and the Sony Handycam has a great mic for such a small camera. I was having a heck of a time trying to get my new LM402 to sound good to my ears. My cousin has one from the mid 80's and it sounds great, I couldn't get mine to sound like his though they are identical in size and shell type. The new ones come with rubber gaskets on every lug, his doesn't have them. I decided to take the gaskets off. I'm not concerned with the lugs scratching or marking the shell. I plan on having this until the day I die. Anyway, to answer your question, I use a ratchet torque wrench from Cannon Percussion (it has a digital read out of numbers 3.0 up to 16.0 or more I haven't tuned anything tighter) to tune all my drums. It's not perfect but it gets me close and I can make any fine tuning adjustments with a regular drum key. I don't know how it works but when you make a tension rod tighter the number on the torque wrench goes higher. I tuned the bottom fairly tight, wrench says 10.0 to 11.0. The top head I also tune fairly tight but not as tight as the bottom. The torque says 8.0 to 9.0. Tama has a Drum Dial and the equivalent to my torque's number on the Dial are around 90 to 95 for the bottom and 80 for the top. I like a 2ply for the top head on all my snares and I like the thicker bottom head. Some people think the thicker bottom chokes the drum. I don't know. All I know is that I like it and many drummers have said they like the way my snare drums sound. To each his own. It just what sounds good to my ears. Remember not to over tighten the snare wires.
Sounds great C, good luck with it !
No gong?
At 11:22 I hit the gong.
Oh damn i stopped early ! Good solo 14 min , my hands hurt lol
Big kit you weren't kidding .
Carmen-cam! At a Mary show … cool
Grandstars were made of birch, correct? I know the Arstar II's are maple. Both great lines by TAMA
Yes, Granstars are birch. Granstar Customs also birch but with a lacquer finish vs the plastic color wrap. I have the Granstar's with the Firestorm Red wrap.
Fire and Water,,,,Wicked drumming,And Kit,,
Gotta get me one of these after the Yamaha Recording Custom '87. I would take the Granstar model same year as my Yamaha Recording Custom or a one year before 1987.
awesome kit my friend!! i hope to buy one some day! greetings from Argentina...
Awesome job. I really miss our jams. Hope you had a great birthday!
un saluto dalla Sicilia
Such a cool time machine! I even saw a rotary phone!
i had this kit for free today i found it in a skip. I asked the owner if i could have it he said yes plus he give me a bag of cymbals he said he was making room as his wife wanted them out. He said he was hoping to find someone to have them. Now i got to play the drums ha ha!!!
Wow, awesome!!
ruclips.net/video/CRH6O2Ecvr8/видео.html Above link is to a video of my other pieces of the 9 piece 1989 TAMA Granstar kit I use for practice since I gig a lot and my kit is packed for transport I used the remaining pieces for my personal practice. Shown is the 11" tom (yes that's right, they offered one but that size didn't take off so now if I'm lucky I have to special order heads from Remo), 18" floor tom, 22" bass drum, and my 8"x14" TAMA snare drum. Not quite sure what model since I bought it used around 1992.
What color was this kit? A little hard to tell in the video
@@maddog0342 Firestorm Red.
Today is 10/6/2017. I still have my 4 piece set. Still sounds great.
That is awesome. When I returned to the music scene in 2012 I found it hard to believe that I was the owner of a "Vintage" set of TAMA's. LOL To maintain the chrome on these I use "0000" steel wool, the finest grade. Just rub the chrome hardware with it not using any creams or pastes, JUST THE STEEL WOOL, and chrome comes back to life. Of course if chrome is damaged, pitted or missing, it won't help. It also, removes and permanent marker you may have used on cymbal stands or legs to mark set up locations.
thnx
That must have been a fortune back then! Awesome to see a vid 'back in the day' instead of a modern one. I see you even put on those mysterious metal labels. I bought a Granstar then as well, and it had both that metal label, and the large 'TAMA' decal you could put on. TAMA never actually showed where to put them, so I see them all over the place, or not at all.
I set drums up then I placed the black metal ones so they would be seen from the front of set. The badge air vents aren't always visible. There were enough extra (2 or 3) that I put a TAMA metal label on both sides of the 12" and 13" just in case I did a set up change like removing the 14" and putting the 12" and 13" on bass drum to make a "5 piece" set. The large TAMA decals I would put on the front bass drum head to make it a "Logo" head. I just used the last one I had from this set a few months ago to put on a new front bass drum head. You can search amazon.com for decals.
I have the 11"12"13"14"15" setup....22 kicks....
I have a double bass Granstar custom in lipstick red.
That Lipstick Red finish was awesome! Loved that color
This is awesome. I have a double kick White Granstar myself. Makes me want to start playing them again.
How much did it cost you new back then?
Sorry this took so long to answer. A crazy year and didn't see the notifications. In 1989 the 9 piece set I bought listed for $4222.00. I was giving drum lessons at a music store then and use a "teacher's" discount so, with tax I paid $2836. I use a four piece from this kit. 12" tom, 16" floor tom, and one of the 22" bass drums. I gig pretty much every weekend now and the kit sounds great. I'm using a 6.5"x14" metal Ludwig snare I got in December of 2015.
A hell of a lot more than most of us had thats for sure...Yamaha's were pretty big in our little scene, maybe Ludwig as well but Tama? I don't recall anyone having a solid Tama kit until the mid 90's. These Granstar kits are badass! Lars is a douchenozzle shit drummer but nobody can argue his earlier kits weren't monstrous sounding..the white/black one is my favorite!
Neil Peart of RUSH, in an effort to better his drumming technique. Was taught an 'open' style of playing, after playing 'closed' for years.
What a night!
Tight band and lead vocals sound like that guy from Chicago (one of my faves!)
Still one of my favorite moments at Scatturos
Outstanding!!! A truly beautiful tribute. Thank you for doing it.
i love that song. The jet sound great.
