    As a builder, the fact that you put a project like this out to tender is a huge problem, asking multiple people to spend so much time and effort to cost such a project will cost each company thousands of pounds, Did the architect or engineer have to bid for the project? Did they work to a pre agreed fee? More likely the architect and engineers charged per hour plus a minimum set The builder says himself, he was £100,000 out of pocket, and will have caused severe delays to other jobs in his diary. It all just seems that it's the people who physically do the work, are the way way undervalued, disrespected, stereotyped, controlled, and scrutinised, workers in the process.

    Very impressed with how much your DIY MVHR install cost you (£1300). However, reading your most recent post below, even the extreme measures you took to achieve air tightness were not quite enough. MVHR can actually make a home less energy efficient by pulling in more air through the leaks of a building, instead of capturing heat from exhausting air. I work as an energy assessor for a charity, and your energy efficiency rating suffers if you have MVHR ! This is because the software assumes that retrofitted homes are basically unable to meet the required level of air tightness to prevent this unwanted effect of making the house even more leaky.

    Not sure how easy it would be, but could the temperature switch be used to turn on a power supply when the operating temperature is reached? This way there would be no power consumed when the fans are not needed.

    I’ve just seen this video a year later; very educational and inspiring. For the 2021 energy consumption due to working from home; a tip for those that can; a Chromebook or Apple MacBook will consume much less energy than something running intel and windows. My work laptop (a modestly fast HP) uses a 115Watts charger block, gets very hot and often runs it’s cooling fans. Many MacBooks and chromebooks don’t even have a fan (and don’t get hot) because they use use so much less energy.

    • @xxwookey
      @xxwookey 8 месяцев назад

      In fact any arm-based device is likely to use less power than an Intel/AMD one. So that includes chromebooks, Macs from about 2020 onwards and some (windows) laptops from 2024 on, as well as various small computers such as OrangePi, Radxa Rock5, etc. All these devices will also run Linux.

      Great video and result! We’re extending and renovating our 1950s house - the builder has just broken ground - and need to put in an MVHR system (the house is very humid already, with little insulation). How can I get hold of your spreadsheet for the DIY MVHR system calcs? Have been quoted £7k for a system (supply only)! Also, the house has a concrete slab, but ceilings are only 2350mm. Any suggestions for floor insulation? We can’t afford to lose much ceiling height.

I have put the sheet in an easier-to-find place on my website. You should now be able to find it at wookware (search for 'wookey'), then pick 'retrofitting a 1960s house' then 'Ventilation (MVHR)'. It could do with some improvements to make it easy to use for random people, or at least some instructions, in the way of spreadsheets.

      I have a radfan I have bought and also 'made' my own version prototype using PC fans. They do work very well IMO. 1) the room does heat up more quickly, 2) the air is circulated a bit more forcefully, so rather than it trickly over cold surfaces (walls windows) and losing its heat, it goes into the room quicker and looses less heat in the process. Also it extracts more heat out of the radiator which is more efficient and keeps return water temps lower which is more efficient, especially for condensing boilers. simple physics bud, tbh I dont know why they are not more popular.

    The amount of money must have been astronomical. I'm very much for upgrading our house, but there has to be a reasonable pay back time for me (apart from HMRV, I regard that comfort).

    • @richardkingadi5511
      @richardkingadi5511 Год назад

      I imagine the cost would have been even greater had they not done so much themselves. It would be interesting to see a comparison of the market value of the house - before and after. Could it be that the work done, and money spent, could be more than returned should they ever reason to sell? I wish I was young enough to undertake such a project! They are to be congratulated on a truly amazing effort!

    • @xxwookey
      @xxwookey Год назад

      The budget is there at 9:27. £73,000. Deep retrofit does cost money, but that house is quite likely to have gone up in value a similar amount. (Cambridgshire is expensive). There is still a tendency to value houses on what they look like rather than how they perform, but that balance has shifted quite a lot in the last few years. And this one looks better _and_ performs an order of magnitude better. The primary benefits of deep retrofit are comfort, low/stable future outgoings, and reduced emissions, not 'payback' from reduced energy usage. That will pay for it eventually of course, but it takes quite a long time.
