Nick's Solutions - Vintage Analog Audio
Добавлен 1 май 2021
Dedicated to vintage analog audio, primarily compact cassettes. With non-standard solutions to common problems like remedy of failing LED peak level meters.
Demonstrates the use of hand-made custom crafted mirror test cassettes.
Mirror Test Cassettes were manufactured under different brands (e.g. ABEX, TEAC, SONY,).
The Mirror Test Cassette also known as Tape Traveler Cassette or Tape Path Checker is used to view inside the cassette shell business end during operation. It tells what is going on when the deck engages PLAY with the heads inside the cassette shell. If the deck is in good working order the tape will reveal a uniform travel past the heads, pinch rollers and capstans without wrinkles, tape skew or being pushed to the side. The MTC provides critical information about the health of a cassette deck and can sound an alarm for service or maintenance.
Two of the shorts show a "humble" Nakamichi BX-100 modified to run at 3 3/4 ips., with 2 channel two track heads installed.

Mirror Test Cassettes - How Do I Make Them
I rework stock audio cassettes converting them into Mirror Test Cassettes (MTC). As a first step, the original labels are removed. Then parts of the internal labyrinth are ground down and a cut-out for the mirror strip is shaped. The mirror strip, a tiny 1.1 mm thick mirror glass measuring 11 x 60 mm is installed. A tape length with a run time of approximately 10 minutes is loaded. The cassette receives new labels indicating among other information the type of tape used. The finished MTC is subjected to a final test. In this particular video a MTC loaded with 12 mircometer tape is shown played on a Teac C-2 cassette deck.
