Hello, my name is Sally Wood for Be Inspired.
I have been an upholsterer and interior decorator for 25 years and have a wealth of information I would like to pass onto others. This has extended to a passion for rehabbing houses, as well as other crafts and cooking. I hope to impart this knowledge to you the guest, in a way that will inspire you to try new things.
This is a totally new experience for me and will be learning a learning curve, as I'm a total newbie to filming and editing. I hope to get a video out once a week at first. Once I have overcome my filming challenges. I'm hoping to become quite prolific in the near future. At present I am still setting up a couple of studio areas.
I use:
PowerShot SX520 HS Canon Camera (gift)
Sony Vegas Movie Studio (sale)

To fix or not fix a chair frame + upholstery - Professional tips and tutorial for all levels
A friend recently asked me to upholster a little carver chair and fix the chair frame. Not all frames need to be fixed, usually, a little TLC is all they need when there is little movement as a minor repair can become a larger problem.

What a useful video! How many yards of fabric (at what width) did you use to create the new upholstery for that chair? I'm afraid I cannot find the part of the video where you mention that.
Adding the lining is the only thing you DON'T show. WTF?
Thank you for your comment. I had lost the first part of showing the lining going into place, but at 5.55 I show how I am putting the second side of the lining in and explain how it was a repeat of the first side.
Is there a name for the tool you are using to pull the caster out?
Thank you for your question. If you are asking about the film with the casters on the chair, I used a tack remover, although a flat-head screwdriver will be just as good. Otherwise, use scissors and/or a seem ripper to remove the stitches as in this video. Good luck with your project.
I like that you're sewing the dacron on instad of using glue. (I tried the glue once and it smelled like gasoline in my apartment for the rest of the day or longer.)
Thank you for your comment. The spray glue can be quite noxious, the openness of the Dacron does allow the fumes to escape into the air more freely.
Thank you,! Great job!
Thank you for your comment, this is a little awkward to do.
👌thanks for sharing this video. Its very helpful. 😊
Thank you for your comment. This method can also help with little tears in the fabric as well.
Great Video!
Thank you for the feedback. Good luck with your project.
What if my burn hole is the size of a baseball?
Thank you for your question. You might be able to harvest the replacement fabric from the side or zip border and use that to patch the hole then add in fabric as close to the colour of the border to patch that area. I am not sure if this video will give you any suggestions as to taking fabric from the border for the repair. ruclips.net/video/BWQZdGAjlrg/видео.html
Can you share the nail gun you used?
Thank you for your question. At the moment I am using an Arrow Pt50 18-guage 3/8 in Medium Crown Finish Stapler. I need a compressor with it. I bought mine from Lowes and it was about $40. If you are starting out or looking at upholstery as a hobby, I suggest an electric staple gun for now. They work well in my experience and are about the same cost without the extra for the compressor and hoses. I hope this helps with your decision.
Thank you so much for this wonderful tutorial. I searched high and low to find a video that shows recovering a chair with exposed legs. So pleased I found your video. I love the casual, comfortable narration and the Brittish accent is lovely. My chair turned out wonderfully!
And, our cats could be identical twins.
Thank you for your comment. It is nice to hear feedback on my video, especially about how well your chair turned out. My intent was to create easy-to-follow tutorials that explained and showed as much as possible the techniques used to complete a project similar to the one shown. I also show the frustrating parts of projects as that is important too.

I have been trying to think of a way to restuff sofa cushion and you helped me 100 percent. Thank you.
Thank you for your comment. It is nice to know this video has given you a way to save your cushions. Good luck with your project.
I was thinking of replacing my couch casinos because my fabric is great but the cushions are crap. I was wondering if you could layer foams like this rather than just buying a big block of a single foam type. It seemed like you would get better durability and comfort doing it this way.
Thank you for your comment. The center firmer foam holds up better, and the softer foam on the outsides allows a little give. I have been making seat cushions this way for a number of years now and my friends and clients have been very pleased with the results.
Your hands were always over the knot we were hoping to see. You said this one and there and like that without our being able to follow because we haven’t any idea to start with. The barking dog was miserable to hear over or tolerate. You had some good knowledge but I could not follow.
there is no where, where I can steal feabric of my arm cushion that wore a whole in it because the used very thin fabric with no extra. So can I just stitch it closed?
Thank you for your question. I would suggest putting a fabric behind to enforce where you intend to stitch and advise cutting back any frayed threads to the more substantial fabric as then you will be sewing the stronger fabric to the patch underneath. Another way of dealing with the problem is to remove the whole area and replace it with either replace it with something similar in colour and texture or pop in a contrast fabric. I hope this will help with your decision. I am not sure if this video will be of use as it harvests the fabric required for the patch from the border. ruclips.net/video/BWQZdGAjlrg/видео.html
Thank you so much for your expertise and easy to understand instructions.💕

Thank you for your comment and I appreciate your support. Good luck with your project.
hello very nice lady with all the sewing you do almost everyday don't you think you should invest in a industrial sewing machine?😊
Thank you for your comment. To be honest, I got rid of my industrial sewing machines several years ago when I decided to retire from this business. As you can see I have not quite managed to achieve that change in my life as many of my friends still ask me to help them with projects. I am of the opinion that many of the people I interact with through my videos wouldn't try these projects if I did use an industrial machine as they would see their domestic machines as not able to cope with the fabrics they want to use. I am reaching out to home crafters/sewers who want to try their hand at a new hobby or who want to improve their skills, not necessarily those people already in the industry.
I had to laugh my three girls 🐾🐾🐾 heard the barking and joined in🤣Thanks for the hints and tips… good to know. I felt for you with all the needle breakages🙈
Thank you for your comment. My two girls were more vocal for some reason than on other days when I film projects. Good luck with your project and keep a nice supply of heavy dusty needs handy, you might be lucky and not need them.
Too long! Iess proselytizing..
Thank you for the comment. I'm sorry you felt it was too long. Proselytizing? Hmm, I didn't think I was converting someone from one religious belief to another, only showing them how to mend a hole in their seat cushion, so it wouldn't become a problem later. Having brought this to my attention I shall be more careful in future
You are simply amazing! Everything so clearly explained, you can't make a mistake! Thank you so much!
Thank you for your comment. I tried to think of all the questions that I have been asked over the years from my students. Good luck with your project
All my boat cushions have that same corner stitching. It hides the zipper pull. My puppy shredded the fabric and I cant match it. Hmdo I have a way tobpreserve the shredded threads and patch without it looking hideous?
Oh dear, those puppies. I suggest taking the fabric from an area that is not visible and using that to patch the shredded areas, then replacing the harvested fabric with something that will match the best you can. As for the stitching over-sew the stitching in the same/similar colour, continue over the patched area, and then over-sew the stitches on the other side of the repair. The over-sewing should be about 2cm/1 inch of the shredded top stitching to hold it in place and stop it from unraveling even more. I hope this all makes sense. I do have several other mending videos that might show you similar methods of mending your cushions but may explain the process differently
Where can I buy and what are the names of all the foams you used???
Thank you for the question. I purchase the foam I use from The Foam Store, which I believe is a franchise, there should be locations throughout the US. As to the foam. In the video, I used super-soft on either side of a piece of extra-firm. Some places might refer to this as low-density and firm-density and in others there might be numbers to denote the firmness of the foams. I know that a couple of ladies have also purchased their foam online and had it sent to them. Good luck with your search.
Bonjour, quel est l’épaisseur du Dacron s’il vous plaît ?
Je vous remercie de la question. Le dacron a une épaisseur de 2 cm/1 pouce, car il donne à la couverture un aspect plus dodu. Bonne chance dans votre projet
Do you have a video on how to sew the L cushion cover? Thank you kindly for your videos.
Thank you for the question. I have a few videos on making shaped cushion covers. Although this is for a T-shaped cushion with a little added shaping, the principle is the same. The main thing is to keep the gusset in line with certain points so it doesn't twist. ruclips.net/video/AIAhaIcaM28/видео.html Good luck with your project.
Great video! Just wondering more or less how much materials per cushion cost? How much would you charge someone for 2 cushions like this? I'm needing to have this done and trying to figure out if I should do it myself or take it to a professional :) thanks!
Thank you for the question. The cost of materials will depend on the sizes of the cushions that you require, and then you have to add someone's fees on top. I have another video on putting seat cushions together, which you might find interesting. ruclips.net/video/VRm_dQL7BnU/видео.html I suggest searching for a place like The Foam Store in your area or online and pricing the foam out and they will probably have Dacron there too. The foams provided will be a better quality and have a wider variety than at a craft store. Good luck with your project
I will be using thick canvas fabric for painting walls so what kind of thread would I use please?
Thank you for the question. I have used Coats & Clark, All Purpose Threads for all my projects over the past 30 years. So far no-one has complained about their items falling apart. Good luck with your project.
She said in the United States we don't expect quality! This is a very true statement, the standard in America is very low, which is very sad!
Thank you for your comment.
Products are made to force consumerism in the US. All media reinforces this ridiculous and wasteful social value. High quality is mostly available to the wealthy.
Hello from UK! I love your tutorials and they have helped me so much to cover foam with batting properly. You mention in this video you used to make an inner lining in calico. I want to do this as I dislike stockinette and find it hard to work with. Do you have a video on this? If not did you make the inner same size as the actual cushion cover, add a zipper? Many thanks.
Thank you for your question. I agree that working with Stockinette is a bind. I make the liner out of calico or curtain lining as a general rule but have been going through leftover fabrics these past years and used that as well, it's better than putting it in the landfill. I make the insert about 2cm/1 inch larger so as not to pull the cushion in too much as you really need the resistance on the outer layer of cloth. ruclips.net/video/cutbNnpgjJc/видео.html ruclips.net/video/lXqdVWN52zY/видео.html Both of these videos cover the lining covers that went with the cushions. Good luck with your project. I'm returning to the Portsmouth area next year

What was the spray can you used?

Thank you for this video. My chair is very similar and I’m struggling with cutting around the arms. One side looks ok but the other side I cut too deep and now it’s slightly exposed just under the arm at the front!!! Not sure if there’s a magic fix or it I have to buy new fabric 😢

Did this cushion fabric stretch and become baggy? I am upholstering a chair with crushed velvet
Thank you for the question. I have not had any comments regarding the crushed velvet stretching, as long as you are using the upholstery/interior decorating fabric you should be fine. The lighter dress-weight fabrics wouldn't hold up as well. Good luck with your project, I am sure it will look fantastic when it is done.
Wonderful video - really informative - thank you!

Just found your channel today and thank goodness!! I haaaaate the spring cushions in our old couch! They are going every which direction and it’s so uncomfortable to sit on. So! I’ve been looking at what to do for a foam replacement cushion and your video is the BEST idea!! I’m new to this so the layers of thinner foam around a solid middle and the Dacron around the outside….yep! Going to take measurements and get this done! Thank you so much! Thank you for your comment. I am glad this method of using foams will help fort out your uncomfortable couch, it is a shame to junk something that still has good bones which will last for many more years to come. From Houston, Texas.
Very useful and excellent. Thank you so much for taking the time to show us this technique and explain 🤗👏🌟

what kind of fabric works best to upholster a dining room chair?
Thank you for your question. I would suggest one you like. I have people who put anything on from velvet, and chenille through to light weights like chintz cotton and silk. Upholstery fabric often has a number of rubs it can take, as in someone sitting on a chair. Most people, make the choice of fabric depending on their needs as in children making a mess through to a more formal setting. Good luck with your project.
Thanks for your tips, I love the traditional way, without the glue, looks neat. What type of thread di you use??
Thank you for your question. I use upholstery thread which you can find in the Coats and Clark election of threads wherever they are sold. If I need to use something else, then it is just a normal thread that I double up. Good luck with your project.
Is there a way to take the balls out and clean between? I have these wheels on a salon tray, and they are just FILLED with hair and it is driving me CRAZY
Thank you for the question. I personally do not know if they can be taken apart. I think there is usually a rod pushed through and then cut back in such a way they do not come off, as a screw would eventually undone. I have in the past spent a while cutting out the fabric scraps, cotton threads, and pet hair that has been caught in our office chair wheels. I'm sorry not to have been more helpful, but there might be some nice person on RUclips who has already worked this problem out. We can not be the only two people who have problems with these wheels and things caught in them.
Little too fast.
Thank you for your comment. I am sorry that you find the information a little too fast. We all learn at different speeds. I try to put all the information in at a working pace, as I am doing the project and I don't want to bore everyone with all the "Umms", "Ahhs ", or blank spaces in the recording. When I eventually get another project like this I will record it and hopefully make a better attempt than this one. Good luck with your project and I am sure there are other much better explanations on RUclips
Why not just get a lumabar pillow?
Thank you for your question. I did actually find two that had slipped down into the chair. My friend had told me that her husband had used lumbar pillows and that she hadn't been able to find them so she could show me how far out she wanted the inside back to be. She wanted something a little more permanent than a lumbar pillow.
@@beinspired1487 I spelled "lumbar" wrong. I was impressed by that procedure of yours. You're very skilled. I am using a lumbar pillow now and I wish I had something better--like a new recliner.
@@dr797-w2b Not a problem, auto-correct often gets me into trouble as it sends out nothing like I was saying and the other person gets confused. The reason for her not getting a new recliner was this had been her husband's favourite chair and he had passed about a month after being diagnosed with brain cancer.

and why is there a 2:30 video about chatgpt that i have to sit through and cant skip? 😡
I'm sorry I can not tell you the answer. I only got a Persil advert at 11.54 which could be skipped, I guess it is the luck of the draw. I do not choose the adverts or the duration. I personally dislike it when I get two adverts together that I can not skip followed by another one a little later it does distract from the viewing of the subject matter.
