Hello Friends, I have waited and hesitaded a long time before finally deciding to put this video and part 2 online of what happened on March 3, 2021 at the Etchemin River Park in Lévis, Québec, Canada. But I've learned so much from that incident that I figured that some good advises came out of it and why not to put them online. If I can help only one person with that story, only one advise tha...

My early mistakes are: going out far by myself without a Spot and lifting the bike with poor technique. I felt my disc slip a little, but was unharmed. What I did well was wearing good boots. My foot was still bruised and I hate to imagine what would happen otherwise. And I took a class early on.

Buy a 250-400 (beware of wheelies etc on 450s) with knobbies and go to some dual sport rides to learn to ride off blacktop if you haven't grown up riding dirt. Started dual sport events, a few each year for 11 years now. Still enjoy those days, some sand, some woods, some coal fields, some rocks, some hills and dales and dirt roads. Now own a 1200GS too and enjoy it one or two-up on dirt roads. For the gulleys, I'll pick the 250 that I can lift off my leg when I stall and fall.

Thanks for being honest, on your faults. I was going to jump your shit, when I saw you with no jacket. But then you made your statement. I am 67, I have had my foot/leg pinned underneath my panniers, my r1200 GSA, had the BMW panniers, until I bent one, then switched to the Jessie’s , I pinned my leg on a dirt road, alone..I had cell phone service, had to call for help, I will be going to soft packs soon, I have dropped the bike 10 or so times, best time to drop the bike, is with friends..start learning how to pick up your bike, and carry a small rope/tie down, so you can use to pull your bike around, if it falls in a rut.if it falls in a deep one, you won’t be able to lift it. Good luck…

HI, welcome to these awesome bikes. Take a class, I learned the hard way on a long ride, way above my skill set. I HIGHLY recommend Rawhyde classes. Their beginner off road class will teach you the basics, starting with how to get on and then also pick up the bike. The confidence you will gain is AMAZING. ride safe

Thanks for sharing the errors you made and for emphasizing the associated risks. I too transitioned from street to ADV but DID take the Rawhyde course which was exceedingly helpful. I agree with every suggestion you made and have managed 3.5yrs on my F800 GS without injury. My new 1250GSA is on order and I will return to Rawhyde for specific training on that bike. They are extraordinary machines yet very different than other bikes both in stature and versatility. I wish more people made videos of this nature for persons new to ADV bikes to learn the various pitfalls before the lesson is learned firsthand.

You also explain how Full-gear is important for safety - Despite the Hotness XD Good on'ya! - Well done! <3 This video is important for me as a new GSA owner! Thank you! I can remember how intimidating my first GS was back in 2012, took quite a while to get used to it and my first time off road was a nightmare despite having a lot of experience at that time riding dirt bikes. Now I don’t want to ride anything else, and when I do I instantly confirm why. Tires do also make a difference, and a good compromise between everything is important. I found that in the Michelin Anakee Adventure tires, but we’re all different and finding your perfect tire is part of the fun. The only way to build confidence is through practise, and getting used to the bike moving underneath you on loose gravel. Training is also a great way to build confidence quickly. Most importantly, just have fun and don’t be too hard on yourself, we all start at exactly the same place, scared as hell and rather horrible at everything. PS: a light coloured mesh motorcycle jacket works even better on a hot day than a t-shirt since it keeps the sun off your skin.

I took my yamaha R3 on a road like that. And the key is just be loose, let the bike do its thing, let the suspension do its thing, You can hold the accelerator with a finger and thumb and go. Take you hand off the clutch ride with one hand and chill. Just watch the terrain and dont ride on the sidewall of a rut.

After many years of riding only road bike the transition to an adventure bike has been difficult for me. They are top heavy and sit really high. Going off-road has been a work in progress sadly most of the roads are full of deep sand and I continue to fall often. Hopefully I can get the skills I need by practicing and avoid injury. Definitely a challenge for me.
