      What a great video idea! I am not much for travelling but I have always enjoyed travelling vicariously through listening to the stories of other people. I had not thought of travelling virtually by reading books like these. What is even better is to hear the enthusiasm in your voice as you recall the locations you have personally seen in the storylines. Great job! Thank you for sharing.

    I downloaded Pachinko way back when it came out but haven't read it yet. I did however read the Bangalore Detective Club finally on your recommendation. I was kind of luke warm in the beginning but as I continued to read, I just fell in love with the characters and their relationships. I will definitely continue the series ... so thank you for the recommendation.

    • @nikitareads

      Always makes me happy when someone resonates with my recommendations! I think I felt similarly with the characters at first, too. I also think the story was a little simple (for a mystery) but I enjoyed it nonetheless. The third one in the series just came out and I am hoping to read it soon!

    • @sweeteliz
      @sweeteliz 3 месяца назад

      Yeah, the mystery plot is simple but I have come to accept that from a cozy mystery... as long as I like the characters and the interactions/dialog are good. I enjoyed the characters/interactions quite a bit in this ... much in the way I like the Lady Hardcastle Mysteries (Do I remember that you don't care for them? I eat them up!)

    • @sweeteliz

    I also didn't super love The Song of Achilles! It was okay but not worth the hype, in my opinion. @@nikitareads Upward spiral has a neuroscientific approach to depression while why has nobody told me this before has a psychological approach. In why has nobody told me this before, the author talks about thoughts, feelings, body sensations and behaviour which keep us in low mood. But I felt that she focuses more on the feelings/ emotional part and less on the thoughts part, so I read another book to understand more about thoughts, it was don't believe everything you think by Joseph Nyugen. If you want a book that is both spiritual and scientific about the thought management, I would like to recommend the power of a thought by Swami Mukundananda. It's a wonderful book combining science and spirituality. These books have helped me significantly

    I don't buy into the belief that you SHOULD read something or, worse, SHOULD like something. We have different tastes for tropes, writing, genres, etc. I HATED The Midnight Library -- talk about being on the other side of popularity. I thought it was predictable and juvenile. Clearly I am in the minority lol. I say read what catches your attention or sparks your interest-- embrace what you love and move on from what you don't. If everyone on BookTok or RUclips liked the same things, there's be no reason to watch all the creators!

    Great reviews! I love Gabor Mate and enjoyed The Myth of Normal, but it is SO long that i didn't finish it. Just finished up A Disapperance in Fiji- Nilima Rao which had a positive review from Sujata Massey. It was a great read....covers indentured servitude and is going to be a series

      I took MONTHS to finish The Myth of Normal! I also put it down a lot, took a break, and came back to it. The audiobook made it a breeze to get through. A Disappeaarance in Fiji sounds amazing!

    I loved Vera Wong too-- and you know there are a growing number of great books with women in their 50s on up. Especially in mystery and Literary Fiction. As I approach 60 (April), I am here for it! I don't read as much Non-Fiction as Fiction but I think the thing about NF is that there are so many topics, it is harder to navigate and find others who enjoy the same topics. Oh.. and I really need to get to the Lost Apothecary.. and well, my list of need to get to's is getting longer and longer lol.

    YAY a book video. I read only a few books this year but really enjoyed 'Verity', 'Ugly Love' by Colleen Hoover and 'Breaking Love' by MJ Summers. I finally got 'The Ex Hex' so will read that this month along with 'The Chateau' by Jacyln Goldis, 'My Favorite Half-night stand' by Christina, Lauren and currently am reading '8 Rules of Love' by Jay Shetty (its really good so far). You mentioned a lot of good books, will have to check some out for 2024. Happy Holidays babe!

    I read Three Holidays and A Wedding last week and I quite liked it! The sister was definitley awful but I did like that the fight was a good moment for Maryam if that makes sense. I think it had a lot good moments in general and it felt very accepting. The one other character that kind of bothered me was Josh once he and Anna got together, it felt like every sentence he said to her was soooo corny and he was constantly fawning over her (and tbh their story felt like it had too many secrest for my liking).

    • @nikitareads
      @nikitareads 8 месяцев назад

      Oh, Josh was definitely corny. I think characters like that are essential to romance books but I don't know why!!

    I checkout the goodreads nominees every year only to remember that I don't usually reads new books immediatley, and I do tend to stay away from a good percent of the popular romances and fantasies because they are so talked about and aren't my cup of tea lol. I'm also picky with memoirs/biographies, definitley not picking up too many of those. I mainly tend to go for people who have to do with social justice, or famous people with interesting lives/who are good story tellers (Michelle Obama, Viola Davis and Matthew McConaughey for example). I heard all kinds of things about Britney's biography but I'm a little hesitatnt

      That's a good strategy! I'm planning on reading Britney's book next year so I will certainly give my two cents about it.

    I havent read ANY of the most popular books lol ... I do have a few (maybe 2?) on my TBR but as you said, "most popular" doesn't mean good! I don't read romance ... not interested in celebrity memoirs ... don't follow booktok. So yeah, the list is pretty meh for me. I will read Yellow Face and probably a few of the thrillers eventually. Until then, I am happy with most of my own selections :)

      Love that outlook! We get to caught up in what's popular and get pressured to keep up when we should just focus on what speaks to us.

      Thanks for the recommendations. Right now I'm listening a Master of Djinn and I hope to finish it soon. During holidays I'd like to be able to finish Emily Wilde's Encyclopedia of Fairies as it's a physical book and demands sitting muscles.I really like both of them.

    You had lots of fun reading this past month! I put Daisy Darker away because another booktuber hated it/DNFd but I think I'll give it a try after all. Also need to get to the Bangalore Detective .. it's been waiting for me for too long! Unfortunately I did not take to The Midnight Library at all -- but i clearly in the minority there lol.

      It really was a great reading month!! Not all books resonate with everyone, and what I’ve found is that I respond differently to books depending on whether or not I really genuinely feel like reading them lol

    I enjoyed the vlog -- my personal preference: I don't really enjoy much b-roll unless it is out and about with little glimpses of your community or whatever. So sorry, I feel like I am intruding and being a little creepy to watch someone (anyone) read for an extended time. May just be me-- but it applies to all vlogs-- not just yours. (Note: I only share this because you asked and because you are developing your own vlog style... normally I'd have kept it to myself)
