There's one thing that has always bothered me about this incident. There was a big thing made of John Brett-Andrews being in the cab with driver Barton of the Oxted bound train, the thing that bothers me is this, disregarding the rights and wrongs of the guard being in the cab, it meant that TWO pairs of eyes were in the cab or the North bound train, I just can't believe that TWO people missed a red light EVEN in misty conditions, the train was going extremely slowly having just left Ashurst. I was 25 years a railwayman and was on duty at Crowborough on the morning of the incident, the two passengers who were killed I spoke to 20 minutes before they died. The whole thing just brought home the idiocy of singling parts of the line in the first place, apart from this awful incident the rationalisation of the track just increased delays and cancellations and trains turning around at Crowborough to make up time.
