Restoring The Pioneer HPM-100 Speakers
Watch how I restore the cabinets on this pair of famous vintage Pioneer HPM-100 stereo speakers from the 1970's era. They will get a complete new cabinet makeover. That includes new walnut wood veneer with a hand rubbed effect finish, new speaker baffle paint, and new grille cloth. Woodworkers and Audiophiles alike will certainly enjoy this How-to video.

    Greetings from Hungary. For question only. If the old box was in good condition. Why wasn't it sanded down and painted with some nice lacquer paint?

    Hi Tom, I found your video. My magnepans don't have cabinets or I would have you work on them. I have a mahogany dresser and night stand that could use it.

      I don't think he redid the edge banding. That makes it weird because I did not see him sanding the old finish out of the front so they will be different finish on the front vs the sides

    Just curious if you upgraded the crossovers with poly caps and air core inductors? Looks are fantastic but a speaker should sound as good as it looks. Those original caps are 40-50 years old and iron core inductors just make noise........

    Just viewed Danny's(Gr Research) mods to transform these speakers into something great and saw your video on the side. One of the most incredible upgrades to date from him. He takes an incredibly sloppy frequency response and just,,,,,,,,,,, well you will have to see the results for yourself. With your cabinet refinishing, you'll own one nice pair of speakers.

    HPM-100 speakers were Pioneers best sounding speaker and they sound ok I guess. The best sounding speakers were and still are American or British made.

    Why not make them in real wood ? Why even expensive speakers are made in chipboard ?

    • @recordsbay
      @recordsbay 11 месяцев назад

      Real wood is not a good material for the speakers.

    • @tomczerwinski3739
      @tomczerwinski3739 10 месяцев назад

      Real wood is not used for speaker cabinet building because in most cases the cabinet will resonate and cause unwanted sounds at certain frequencies. Almost all speaker cabinets are made with either particle board (as in the case of the Pioneer HPM-100's) or with MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard).

    Nice shop! I always envy people who have shops like that. I have all the tools and i love wood working and electeonics work but my garage is a multi duty single car garage that i use for electronics, woodworking and storing a car. So i always have to move stuff around every time i want to start any project.

    • @tomczerwinski3739
      @tomczerwinski3739 10 месяцев назад

      Thank you! Even though my shop might look fully functional, I also have to move machines, workbenches, and tools around so I can still pull my truck in the garage. Most everything in my shop is on casters and has its own place out of the way when not in use.

    Did you use edge banding for the front or did you not revender the front edge?

    • @tomczerwinski3739
      @tomczerwinski3739 10 месяцев назад

      The only part of the cabinets that was still in good condition were the front edges. So they were just sanded and re-finished.

    Top work..so satisfying 😊 I'm planning to do the same with my pioneer hpm 100 can I do without the vineer? Thanks

    • @tomczerwinski3739
      @tomczerwinski3739 10 месяцев назад

      Thanks! Certainly you can just refinish the cabinets if they are in good shape. Most speaker cabinets of this age have yellowed over time, so if you want them to look new again simply sand the finish layer off to revel the raw veneer and re-coat with a new clear finish. Be very careful when sanding as you can go right through the thin veneer skin and expose the particle board of the cabinet.

      Thank you! Yes, the Pioneer HPM-100's were one of the best sounding and best selling speakers in their price range back in the late 70's, early 80's.

  • @writenamehere0000
    @writenamehere0000 Год назад

    I wonder why you didnt keep the original after you sanded it, just apply the coat of something you choose to. Veneer on top of that box is no need.

    • @tomczerwinski3739
      @tomczerwinski3739 10 месяцев назад

      When I acquired the speakers, the cabinets were in very bad shape with scratches through the veneer, chipped corners, and a few gouges that were beyond repair. I wanted the cabinets to look like brand new, so the veneer was the only way to go.
