This album found me in Cordova Alaska in 2002 and in later years while operating seismic vibrator trucks hundreds of miles from any road in the Alaskan arctic through the winters of near complete darkness. Had not heard it since the mid 2000’s in CD form. I listened to the testimonies and this song in particular in that abyss of beauty and nothingness. I now sit in a hole on the beach a few miles as far west and north as Oregon permits weeping as the love of my life passed away just days earlier. I’m the same blind traveler somehow looking for answers these decades later. I cannot express the gratitude for the posting of these magical recordings 🙏

Well! I was amazed and delighted to find this album on RUclips. I recorded this album for Frank when we both worked at the Chamizal National Memorial in El Paso, TX, probably in 1975. Frank was superintendent of the park, and I was the park sound technician there. Frank's passion was not so much performing, but researching these barracks tunes and keeping them alive and available to anyone who would listen. As the commenter below says, Frank was a credible performer, but no Johnny Cash 🙂. However, you can pick up his sincerity and reverence for these songs. Many thanks for posting them!

Thank you for posting my cousin's album. Been looking for it forever. They played it at the Porterville reunion back in the early 80s and everybody bought an album or cassette. Not all heroes wear capes.

His drummer Jim Crawford would rent out the basement apartment in his victorian house to Manhattan College students. From 1971 to 1972 I lived there with 2 classmates. He and his wife Aileen were wonderful to us. They would invite us upstairs on occasion when they had an old musician friend visiting. He would introduce them as the best trumpeter or clarinet player but would then say they were “old as mud”! He would show us scrapbooks filled with pictures of him sitting high over the band at various venues, including Palisades Park. He also had a copy of Jazz Magazine with his picture on the cover. It detailed his style of playing the drums and was credited for a style that became known as “The Lunceford Beat”. Of course I knew of all the other greats from that era, but when I got home to Brooklyn on a break from school, I asked my father if he had ever heard of the Lunceford band. His eyes opened wide and said of course! It was one of the best of that era. Many years later, when I returned to show my high school age son where I used to live, the house was gone, replaced by a townhouse. I still love to hear the music and have wonderful memories of Jim Crawford. There used to be more videos of the band but I guess they were taken off due to copyright issues.
