I just finished an extensively detailed course on St Justin Martyr and extracted important elements for my students in Eastern Orthodox Adult Catechism at the parish. All I can say is that unless one reads the scholarship on the Apologia, much detail is lost since his every sentence is implying deep understanding of the stoic and middle platonist philosophical positions as well as the errors , limitations, and deviations from Orthodox Christian thought. For anyone interested in the resources, a great place to start is the Ancient Christian Writers Series volume 57, published by Paulist Press. An in-depth study of the Apostolic fathers and the next generation (St Justin, Ireneus, et al) will open up the NT as well as give clearer context to Acts and the continuity of the Orthodox church’s beliefs and practices since then! I hope everyone enjoys these documents. My premise when catechizing heterodox to Orthodoxy is not to start with ‘our interpretation’ of the Bible because we all have the Bible and are already disputing the meanings. Rather, I begin at the level of the Apostolic fathers (and Didache etc) because they give a very clear picture of what the church did (praxis) liturgically and sacramentally and how they exegeted scripture. What a wonderful way to Bible study!
