OUR MISSION
Ranching, Conservation, Communities -- A Winning Team!
OUR PURPOSE
Ranchers Stewardship Alliance exists to help multi-generational
and beginning ranchers build the collaborative, trusting
relationships and community-based solutions we need to create
healthy working landscapes and vibrant rural communities.
OUR VISION
We believe in a future where ranching and rural communities
are so successful in the Northern Great Plains that ranch
families never need to consider selling or transitioning
their land out of production agriculture. Opportunities are
abundant for new agriculturalists. We have preserved the
integrity of working lands so that the people, economies,
wildlife and natural landscapes may flourish in the Northern
Great Plains.

Water Weary Rancher Resourcefulness: Dowsing Tutorial
One doesn’t just pluck a hole in the ground and start drilling. One of Paul’s more unconventional skills is his practice of water dowsing-a method he proudly teaches to curious visitors, including members of the Ranchers Stewardship Alliance staff. Armed with brazing rods purchased from the local Ezzies store, Paul uses the rods to detect underground water sources. Standing before a whiteboard, he explains the physics behind the process: as water moves through rocks, it carries trace minerals that create a magnetic field. The rods respond to this field, pulling slightly in your hands as you walk in the right direction. "Walk long enough," Paul says, “and you’ll feel that pull.” His blend ...

Water Weary Rancher Resourcefulness: The Story

Birds chirp in no-man’s land. A tall red barn, weathered paint but no hint of a lean, stands as the beacon welcoming you into the yard of Paul Williams, military veteran and newly invested Montana landowner. For all the silence, his yard is lively. A smiling Jack Russell Terrier looks up from the seat of an old ranch pickup. The reluctant Australian Cattle Dog keeps a wary eye on a drone captur...

If walls could talk, the pistachio green surface of Sally Austin’s kitchen would instantaneously have you settled in over a cup of steaming Folgers. A gallery of framed photos, some slightly askew, tells the story of the 70 years Austin has lived on the ranch. Tucked among them, funeral programs and a well-worn flyswatter remind you of life’s unvarnished realities. Legacies experience loss. Ran...

It’s on this land outside of Turner where you’ll find multiple generations strategizing for the long-term viability of the ranch originally homesteaded in 1901...

The sweet peas are popping up in north Phillips County, enjoying the cool Montana spring before the heat of summer puts them to rest for another year. Birds chirp. The breeze is cool, the air fresh. And in the mind of Brian Fox, the gears are turning. Will the ranch improvements he’s made in the last year equate to the improvements he’s after? They were unconventional, he’ll give it that, but a...

Hahaha awesome! Beaver revenge was sweet. So glad the big ole rodents are such great teachers. ❤ 😅
Hi, I jus thought I'd comment. I'm not signed up. This video just showed up in my utube feed. It was a very good session with some great discussion. Just a bit bout me. I'm originally from Montana red lodge carbon county. Both sides my family been in Montana for 3 generations or longer - farmers and ranchers. My background and work history is academic, agriculture, forestry and wildfire. Yes I am retired. When I see sessions like this I rarely see a clear division between pre and post disturbance event. Usually I see emphasis on reaction to the event after it happens with little on what coulda shoulda been done. I think it really important that sessions like this look forward as well as backward to at least plant the idea of forward and backwards in participants minds as well as viewers. I know a.lot of these sessions go on but I'm not convinced the full meal deal is addressed - thus perhaps some confusion an opportunity missed. That's my only comment - otherwise great session. -Ed-
Thank you for that feedback, Ed. And THANK YOU for your interest in our content!
I wonder if the size of white tailed deer in your area would be a predictor of the optimum sized cow in the area?(something like 10x a yearling deer for the cow) They should reflect heat/cold pressures as well as soil fertility.
Interesting concept! We'll make a note.
I wonder if the fires in Texas are going to affect anything.😢
Great!!!
'Promosm'
What do you charge for consultation.
I would like to obtain a copy of the presentation PDF file. Is there a way to get it?
I was just wondering about that.
Thank you for sharing!
Notice on his slide about challenges and issues in ag, there is no mention of low profits, and only a side glance at costs.
Raise poultry and pigs on the low productivity areas!😁
❤️🔥
Why do you have to cut down the trees? 😞
Great tool to get folks to take on more bison (you know, instead of genocide…)
how long do the batteries last?
It depends, but somewhere around 8-12 months.
Great information. I learned a lot. Thanks!
I am interested!…How do I get in touch with a real person regarding this product? Are there people who have used these collars for long enough to be able to evaluate Venice performance.

great presentation, thank you everyone involved
And calves go everywhere? A dog gps collar is 200$ I can only imagine how much these are, silly!
EShepherd in Australia is well tested
Great video and camera work!
I can't imagine it works better than a tight electric fence and I'm sure this costs a hell of a lot more.
Maybe, but when one cow tears down that tight fence, the whole mob gets out. Or a calf crawls under and gets spooked taking down the wire, then the whole herd follows. Lot's of time and frustration dealing with that...
After researching it appears to be about the same in labor/time cost of daily cross fencing movement, and/or permanent fencing with Hotwire by the mile in annual start up cost for 50-100 head of cattle or more. In addition to location and grazing density movement management it provides illness prediction data, some even help with calving data and grazing intake, rest and time of grazing per individual cow, temperature and studies how the collar and pace of the cow moves in comparison to make management data predictions- so a lot of nutrition help data and health data for management of cattle that help save time and help with better planning and time and resource management planning and disease and illness progression prevention data… a cross fence mobile electric paddock fence doesn’t provide that. It won’t eliminate current methods it will enhance and save time so that ranchers can spend more time doing other animal stewardship and land management tasks and use current ways as training backup and general backup etc it also greatly increases the capacity to graze on blm or rural remote locations of leased or private lands in a more beneficial and easier managed way after researching we are going to give it a go!
Developing a goat collar may be useful and a good control demo if you could develop a cost effective system to control movement of goats on highway right of ways, weed control area, parks, fire prone areas, etc. If ranchers see it working in these situations without portable fence, shepherds, dogs, etc would be convincing in the effectiveness of your product.
Do you lease the towers?
Nice vid, looking forward to seeing more uploads. You should use Promosm to grow your channel.
This is exciting technology! I see many of us ranchers using this as a tool to improve our rangelands in the future!
