Can you paint a VIBRANT portrait without losing values? 😬
Every painting starts with the colors on your palette. In this art tutorial you'll learn how to paint a vibrant portrait without losing values.
This will help you get that perfect balance between color and value in your portrait painting. We'll also get into color theory - saturation, color temperature, color relativity, and how to juggle them all based on light and shadow. And I'll share principles that will let you paint with freedom.
This video should be helpful to oil painters, digital painters, acrylic painters... most traditional painters.

    Thank you for this wonderful critique Daniel! I especially think seeing the comparison with color being the difference maker when the values are close together and how temperature shifts can add I was looking for. As a testament to your skill, you absolutely deduced how I did my painting; I started with a large single colors for the shadow and light side. Seeing the comparison of warmth in the draw over, there's a lot for me to consider in the future outside of the colors and values in isolation. Based on what you've said now, I can see that I didn't consider the relationships as a whole, because I was too focused on them separately (as I wasn't working with a palette or color picking, just what I observed from the reference). I have no experience in traditional paints, so perhaps I could learn to work with and set up a color palette. I can see the potential for what expressiveness I can aim for, so I'm excited to see what else is in store. It would be interesting too I think, to see what working with a cool light would be like, to demonstrate how important those relationships are in multiple light sources.

    • @danielfoltapaints
      @danielfoltapaints 6 дней назад

      @@b1uezer yeah having a palette to give yourself structure, and setting some parameters might seem restrictive at first but it actually gives you the freedom to paint confidently inside the bounds you set for yourself. And then as you’re painting you’ll want to continually revisit the parameters and explore what might happen if you push them in one direction or another. Also I was mainly using a color picker to help people see where I was looking - it can be a crutch if you aren’t also identifying colors with your own eyes. For example, when I was painting over your portrait I didn’t always use the color palette I made from the reference, because your colors were different. Instead I chose colors that worked with your overall color relationships, corrected the relationships that contradicted each other, and then played around from there. For a cool light scenario the parameters will stay the same. Lights will generally be… 1. Brighter 2. More colorful 3. Most colorful at the darker values The temperature relationships get inverted. If the lights are cool, the highlights will move towards warm (or neutral), and the shadows will be relatively warm to the lights - but the reflections of that light inside the shadows will be relatively cool compared to the other shadows.

    Maybe it doesn't matter to most people, or maybe it's off-putting, but I find mixing God with art to be refreshing and encouraging and wholesome. There's a kind of understanding, a false understanding in my opinion, that liberals are creative and conservatives are not, or that liberals are more creative than conservatives. Maybe "atheists" and "Christians" would be more accurate, more relevant. It gets discouraging to feel like people who hold your own cherished beliefs are not creative or thoughtful people. This is just another indication that there are many of us out there, from all walks of life, in pursuit of all different endeavors. God be with you, brother, as cringe and goofy as this post may sound.

    • @danielfoltapaints
      @danielfoltapaints 6 дней назад

      Thank you Sel! I appreciate that - I don't think it's cringe at all. With all our different walks of life, I've found most people enjoy open discussions around God or spirituality, regardless of beliefs. Especially for something like art, which, for all the "technicals" is ultimately a pursuit of beauty. The fact that there are technical principles that consistently work every time... is part of that discussion of beauty, and truth. And considering how those technicals are all based on the light... it feels like a travesty not to wonder about the deeper implications. The light brightens things. It can illuminate a path. It gives warmth. It brings clarity. It exposes things, like how exposing ourselves invites intimacy. It reveals truth. It's beautiful. It's good. These are all attributes we would assign to a perfect God. Whether someone believes God was invented in our minds or that God is real (as I do), I think we can all appreciate the added significance of how the book of Genesis - one of the oldest and most widely respected creation stories - starts with the creation of light itself.

    i love this example 0:15. start with the most simple. start with one, then two, and three and so one. you basically just keep making distinction in the light and that creates more power (i.e makes it more "realistic"), but its all based on the simple foundation of oneness. "making distinctions create power, destroying them creates freedom" - Peter Ralston. in this case, the distinctions being between lighter and darker and power being just how "realistic" and "solid" the art is, since simplifying shadows does make art look more cartoony or unreal, so creating more freedom. thats at least my thoughts, i love finding spiritual principles in every aspect of life.

    • @danielfoltapaints
      @danielfoltapaints 7 дней назад

      @@dolev2945 very thought provoking quote, thanks for sharing. I think we tend to find beauty when power and freedom collide. Or to use other words, order and chaos. Like when roiling waves crash against a rocky shore 🤔 or like a John Singer Sargent painting

    How to Draw BOLDLY like JC Leyendecker and Sargent 00:00 Введение и анализ исходного рисунка • Художник хочет создать что-то среднее между стилями Джона Сарджента и Джей Си Лайнедеккера. • Важно понять основной источник света для достижения желаемого эффекта. • Художник использует плоские формы и уделяет внимание стилю и рисованию. 00:58 Важность света и теней • Свет и тени важны для реалистичности изображения. • Художники, такие как Дж. К. Лайондекер, уделяют внимание формам света. • Совет: даже если не интересуетесь гиперреализмом, важно знать, как сделать изображение реалистичным. 01:42 Работа с формами и светом • Важно придавать значениям направление и структуру. • Использование промежуточных значений для сглаживания света и тени. • Пример: добавление дополнительного оттенка для смягчения краев. 02:39 Детализация и упрощение • Внимание к формам и структуре под кожей. • Добавление оттенков для создания теней и градиентов. • Пример: смягчение подбородка и добавление темных оттенков для создания теней. 03:22 Работа с источниками света • Усиление плоскостей, находящихся напротив источника света. • Добавление оттенков для создания острых краев и резких переходов. • Пример: изменение значений для лучшего описания происходящего. 04:48 Упрощение и доверие свету • Важно упрощать формы и оставлять их в блочном виде. • Упражнение: не смешивать края, а прорисовывать их одним мазком. • Доверие свету и умение передавать форму - ключевые принципы. 05:48 Заключение и советы • Сосредоточьтесь на создании впечатления трехмерности. • Сначала изучите реалистичную сторону вещей, затем переходите к экспериментам. • Автор готов давать бесплатные конструктивные советы и предлагает отправить свою работу для помощи.

    Can’t the information (color, value difference etc.) be in either the light or the dark, just not in both in the same image? For example, if the light is blown out (very strong) you may actually see more detail like value and hue variations in the shadow.

    • @danielfoltapaints
      @danielfoltapaints 8 дней назад

      @@sketchingwithcolor9480 😲 yes! And this Saturday I’m posting a video with a painting that has blown out lights and you’ll see me focus more on the shadows. But fundamentally, if the lights aren’t overexposed and the composition has information in both the lights and the shadows, you’ll find more information (more variances of color and value, details, etc.) in the lights, because without light there is no information. In the case of blown out lights, our eyes have adjusted to the shadows and so they are perceiving the “light” inside those shadows. So ultimately, light = visual information. Thanks for asking 🙂 had to think about that for a bit
