I love using dusty Miller as a filler in my arrangements .
Ive been doing lots of clean up too. Its that time of year. All the spring flowers have died away and need to go. Ive been out of town more this summer than most and it shows. Ugh. Lots of work to keep flower fields looking good.
So true - this is the time when I often feel overwhelmed. Gotta just keep at it.
I have a question!? I have grown or lay after the past two years and it does not get very tall at all! Is there a variety that gets taller stems? I use hay to mulch my beds. If I’m going to turn them over, I just pull out what is there and cover it back up with the hay until I’m going to plant again. I am finding direct seating doesn’t work that well for me. So I tend to start them in trays and put them out when they are pretty small.
My Orlaya that was planted outdoors in late winter was quite short too. The best and tallest was sown last fall in my hoophouse. I’ll be direct sowing outdoors this fall too.
This is random, but one of the reasons I love watching your videos because you talk like me! I'm from the Illinois side of the Quad Cities and I say "root" (and "roof") the way you do which I have come to find out is not the way people in other parts of the country say it.
Haha, so true!! Regional dialects 😀. I don’t go as far as “crick” and “warsh” as some near me do! My husband says I say hammock and manure strange too 😂
Good video - thanks😊
I use mulberry branches early in the year, a tall wild grass we have here in Va. In June and catnip and bee balm foliage. Thanks for the tour and info.
Awesome! We have wild mulberry here - will have to try.
😊
I picked many seed pods early in the summer. There are no pods on the vine currently at the end of July and I’m wondering if it will produce another set of seed pods near the end of its growing season?
Pods come after the flowers. If the vines are still green and budding up again, you should have more. Mine are just setting flowers now. With our growing season, I just get flowers in August.
I use raspberry greens. I'm in zone 3 so I rely heavily on raspberry greens early in the season when there isn't much else. It holds up really well. Longer than the flowers.
Yes! Do you have thornless? I have some thorned I could use, but I get lazy and don’t like to strip them all the time.
@@wildbirdfarm I do not have thornless and do not strip the thorns. I'm just careful with them.
@@wildbirdfarmThe thornless is Joan J that most cut flowers growers use! It’s on my list to get! 🌸
Thanks!
Sedum, when its still green and before the heads get too large. I have a huge clump in my garden and never thought about it until I saw someone else using it.
I love that you can use it green or as it turns color later in the season!
Mahogany hibiscus is the same as cranberry hibiscus. It makes a great drink. Use the young leaves in salads. Yes anise Hyssop is a mint and a perennial. Good to add to herbal tea.
Great list. I love using basil from my veg garden in bouquets.
It smells so good!
OK, I was thinking about buying one for chamomile, but I can only really find berry ones.
Mine was called a berry picker and it works great!
I just planted 8 ninebarks..I use mints and frosted explosion currently. Hibiskus was a good idea thank you
You will love all the ninebark in a year or two - it grows really fast.
😊
Beetles don’t see quite as bad here either this year.
Good news!
😊
The stars of the show for me this year in SoCal 9b are Arabian Night, Kelvin Floodlight, and Linda’s Baby. My Wizard of Oz is starting to bloom too. I’ve been battling 100+ temps with shade cloth. It’s a challenge.
Whew, 9b, you are warm! The weather seems to always be a challenge lately. I don’t have Kelvin - will look into that one!
Where did you buy Wizard of Oz? I love it so much! I haven't grown dahlias successful (yet) 😢. I have trouble with them. I grew Lisianthus for the 1st time successfully but I think Dahlias are supposed to be easier?? IdK 😅 Golden Hour perfectly describes your backdrop. Your dahlias are Gorgeous.
I bought dahlia tubers from a local farmer and have been storing and keeping them since. I think dahlias are easier if you don’t count diggers tubers at the end of the season!
some waterlilly type dahlias close up for the night, silver years is waterlilly type :)
Thank you! I’ll have to pay attention for that.
An unrelated question here. How often do you water your hoop house over the winter?
I water weekly or twice weekly through October/Nov and then it doesn’t get anything once it gets cold or, ie when I cover with frost cloth inside the tunnel. Zone 5.
Beautiful!
Nice video - you do a great job of explaining things.
Hoa rất đep❤
Beautiful Thank you or all the detailed information I love seeing the evolution of your gardens
You are welcome - thanks for being here!
May I ask what the spacing and aisle widths are for your dahlia bed?
Both beds and paths are 18in this year. I’ve never done my paths that narrow but I am trying to cut down on weeding. Past years I had 4 foot grass paths between. I will probably do 24in paths with straw again next year as it’s tight this year.
The new space is looking wonderful! It has been fun to see the transition to the new garden design. If you’re interested in seeing what cut flowers are looking like in NE Washington, I invite you to virtually visit my garden via my channel - I posted a garden update last weekend. We’re growing much of the same flowers, and it’s interesting to see the slight difference in our season. My location is 6a/6b - we’re right at a transition line and in a small microclimate. Thanks for taking time to share an update!
Thank you! I will for sure tune in! It’s a great day to catch up on YT as it’s blistering hot out! 🥵
That seems like you’ve created a really beautiful relaxing you pick experience. The landscape timbers make the beds really look nice. #farmgoals. My garden style is more chaos!😂
Thank you! Oh and, I’ve got plenty of chaos - note gigantic burn pile and weeeeeds 😄
Beautiful 😍
The Beatles like marigolds more than zinnias
Yes they go after those too but my marigold plants are super small yet.
You do a great job.🌻.
Thank you, I appreciate that!
How do you manage wild life. Rabbits having their way in our garden. Great tips for the Japanese beetles
For rabbits I use wire dollar tree trash cans upside down for single plants. For a large row, like my tulips, I use liquid fence. Usually one spray lasts a week+!
Thanks for the excellent video. The secret garden space is coming together even without the shrubs.
Thank you!
What's your process for starting a new bed in lawn? Do you cut the sod first and do you use a weed barrier?
Yes, cut out the sod, till that first time and add amendment/compost. After planting in it, mulch heavily with wood chips, straw or lawn clippings. I don’t use mademade weed barrier except for tunnel pathways.
The problem I am having is where to plant all the new seedlings that will replace the existing ones until those can be removed in a couple years. 🤪
Oh ya, that is a problem. I would say interplant those little seedlings and give them some shade this summer but not if you’ll keep the older plants more than through this fall. I’d tell my husband I need to dig up more grass 😂😁
... From Québec ... Thanks so much ...
Thanks for watching!

@@wildbirdfarm will do thank you!
New visitor here from Canada 😊 Enjoyed your video.
Welcome and thank you!
Great information. Thank you!
I really want to grow Cobaea scandens, but the seeds are SO persnickity. I've tried for 4 years, and have failed to get ant germination. I've knocked the seed coat, soaked, planted them on their edge, planted partly exposed, different soil mixes, etc. I hope this will be the year at least 1 sprouts!
I grew these two years ago for a trellis. I nicked and soaked the seed and I had 5 or so starts. My problem was they bloomed so late in the season I only saw about 5 blooms. Good luck!!
@@wildbirdfarmdoes soaking seeds in peroxide work? Some channels promote this.
I’ve only soaked in water; I haven’t tried that.
I started gardening for my landscape. And never wanted to cut any of my flowers 😛 so this year I started a cut flower garden and I’m totally smitten 😊 I have yet to cut a bouquet because things are short or wonky or someotherthing 😂 but I did grow everything from seed.. strawflowers(thick thick stems, yarrow(will it flower this year 🤷♀️) ammi (seems short, bit filling out.. no flowers yet) seed dahlias (25 mixed.. so far they are red or white) gomphrena (plants are about 6” tall with a single flower in the center.. can’t really even see it unless your looking down at it) celosia (6-8 inches tall pampas plume mix.. that are mostly fushia) scabiosa (getting ready to open) feverfew(short.. but sweet flowers 😌) and snapdragons (not even sure what went on with them.. they are like spaghetti noodle thick with bitty blossoms) I also grew a bunch of winter sown perennials and cool flowers (that mostly failed 😣) I have seeds ordered for sowing this month.. lots of perennials.. yarrow, hollyhocks, scabiosa, rudbeckia, echinacea, gaillardia, honeywort, viola, phlox, mint. Love your list!
Growing from seed is an accomplishment in itself! Some of those perennials will come back bigger and better next year!!
Great video....new subscriber ....watch your video with Jesse at b.a.r.e. flower farm.....🥀🌺🌻
Welcome - thanks for subscribing!
Thank you, thank you for your detailed information Grateful for your knowledge and recommendations
You are very welcome - thanks for watching!
Milky spore worked for me. It drastically reduced the number of these beetles in my garden and made it way easier to manually remove the remaining.
I am so happy to hear this! I will do a second application this fall!
Sea holly is beautiful but smells horrible.
Does it really? I grew it from seed last year and it is blooming now but I don't notice any smell.
I agree it isn’t my fav smell. I don’t notice it too much if it’s just one stem in a mixed bouquet.
@@cejanuary9378 I'm always looking for dog poop in my garden but it's the sea holly lol
My seaholly hasn't bloom yet but I planted it near another plant i noticed stinks when it blooms, Ascot rainbow euphorbia. Smells like pee
@@lfay8177 my Sea holly didn't bloom the first year. This year it is blooming like crazy.
Yes I’m in zone 6b. They are all over my beans
Green beans? They haven’t found mine yet….
Great info. Thanks for sharing 😊
Great information! I winter sowed a lot of these perennials and they are all blooming now in 5b. I will continue to grow these plants.
I love to hear that!
I think a lot of times when perennials plants are said to only come back for a few years it really means that they like being divided. I divided my 3rd year delphiniums this year and got about a dozen plants from each. I think feverfew, yarrow and dianthus also benefit from this but haven’t tried with scabiosa. Rather than being ‘shortlived’ they just don’t like being crowded. Just my observations of course. And of course this does set the plant back a year. Just love your planting list and looking forward to trying Sea Holly after watching Jesse’s (bare) videos
That’s a great point! A dozen delphinium plants is awesome!!!
