Small stream fishing in the Isle of Man
I was just scanning for salt water fly fishing 🎣 and found your video and I remember watching it probably 7 years ago but I wasn't specifically looking for fly fishing, I was hoping to find out what laxey beach is like for bait and lure fishing? I've never had the chance to fish it in my 43 years on the island because although out of those 43 I've been fishing 38 as my grandad taught me when I was 5 and unfortunately he's been gone a long while otherwise I'm sure we'd be there now giving it a go but unfortunately I have to go wherever the driver decides he wants to fish and my pleas fall on deaf/stubborn ears "if it ain't broke don't fix it " so it's always battle fishing in peel or pt Erin/St Mary, both good marks but sometimes you just want a change in venue and tactics.
Nice place to be !😊
The handful of atolls among the *Outer Seychelles* , whilst sharing all the glories these kind of places are capable of, contrast pleasantly to only too many of Oceania`s atolls in having nice and shallow lagoons.
I was gonna try here tomorrow mate, are you just off the rocks that are down by the long rope you use to climb down i.e. the jagged dangerous rocks? What time of year are you fishing here? Good catches well done
Nicely done Geoff! Thanks for sharing...
Thankyou. A bit thrown together but I really enjoyed our trip. Bit of a learning curve but on to Providence next time I think :)
What flys do you use ?
Any baitfish/sand eel pattern will work. Surf Candy , clousers etc
Brilliant mate
What fly were you using? Cheers Jimf
Hi Jim, if I remember correctly I had a three fly cast with a daddy on the point a foam beetle in the middle and a black midas on the top dropper
Just checked the info on the video it was a black sedge hog not a daddy :)
Geoff Thomas thanks for the info
I think it is one of the best bass fly fishing video I've ever seen on the IOM ! Well-Done Geoff Thomas. Can these small floating poppers be bought from Sportfish or Fulling Mill ? Exactly where about is this place ? Is it on the west coast of Jurby ? What is the name of the beach ? Thank you kindly.
Nice. What fly is that? Looks like a crease fly or popper maybe. Perfect conditions.
Brilliant video👍
Great vid👍🏻
Some great footage there Geoff. Thanks for uploading
Great video! Can’t quite tell if that’s jurby or not Geoff?
Yes Jurby, down towards the Passages wreck👍
Geoff Thomas ah yes thought so. Great when you can see that wreck at low tide
Been waiting for one of your videos, wasn't disappointed. . You made it look easy👍😄
It was very slow to start but as I moved along the beach and the tide started to run I found quite a few. I did go the next night and only had 5 although they were slightly bigger
Nice video! Lots of action. I'd better keep practicing my double haul and return to the Isle of Man.
Perfect evening for it! 👍
Amazing what is around Jurby. Bass, the biggest Plaice I've seen landed in years and even Black Bream on occasion. Great video.
Hi Geoff where about is this on the Isle of Man. I've always been told its very difficult to catch bass on the IOM' especially with fly-fishing ??? It's the first time I've ever seen in 35 years. Thanks for sharing. Hope to hear from you soon.
It's Jurby beach. They are not there all the time you have to put the time in and do a lot of walking😁
This was a joy to watch. Subscribed in the hopes to see more videos like this. :D
Special fish has a growth on its jaw
What is beach foraging like in i.o.m? As we will be moving there any information appreciated thanks! And are mackerel about?
Go to peel. And fish there if you want mackerel.
Hey Geoff I recently fished With u in Cuba when is the Cuba footage coming out ...
Brio Brio back home now, I have downloaded a few bits and pieces to my computer. A bit of editing over the next few days and I should have something to post😁
Looks great fun on the fly. Never tried it for bass 🎣
Try and resist the urge to strike straight away, count to two then slowly lift. Its the same with trout on still water with big surface flies, they swamp it then turn and take it.
nope. don't strike at all, just keep retrieving. striking is a hard habit to break but it will increase the hook up ratio immensely if you can do it.
Ahh mega am loving watching your videos buddy there really good your really good on the fly am gonna have a bash round the back of the head next week more really because I’ve not fished there since I was a kid thanks for the info though Geoff hopefully I’ll bump into to you on the rods sometime 😁
Where is that?
Mark Dougherty it's Jurby. Lots of small stuff about early season
Do you need a license
haydn harris yes you do. It's £208 for the season which runs from March 10th till the end of January each year. Or you can get day licences for £16.30 and week licences £74.50. Children under 13 are free and student licences are £78.80, £32.60 and £9.20 respectively. Available online on the IOM Government web site
Where about is this reservoir in onchan
haydn harris this is the Kerrowdhoo reservoir. If you come from Onchan backwards on the TT course, you turn tight at Hillberry and follow the road. You will eventually go down a small hill over a white bridge then you go straight on where the main road makes a sharp right you will see a gate on the right at the top of the single track. Have look on google earth, there are two reservoirs together the Clypse and Kerrowdhoo
Nice. I've been looking for some popper flies, can I ask where you bought it or did you tie it yourself?
mybookfacetube bought them in the USA I'm afraid at the Bass Pro Shop. They are called Pucker Lips. Tried to copy them but still trying to find the right foam. Will let you know if I do
A strip strike would help you hook up, also use a smooth double handed retrieve;)
Graham Rawson cheers Graham. It's hard not to strike when most of your fishing is for trout. Did get a couple more on the Roly poly later on but with a sinking lure
Geoff Thomas Try a straight roly poly with a gurgler too, as long as it creates a wake. The rod is tucked under your arm so you can't trout strike;)
Class fishing :D
Does the temperature of your hands burn the fish. Body temperature 37.6 compared to water temperature? Just wondering?
Kevskiok always have wet hands before handling fish
Ok cool
Very nice. Isle of Man looks like a nice fly fishing area. Much Brown trout about?
Hi Tim. This river is directly below one of our fish Hatcherys. We had really bad floods last year and many Rainbow trout escaped . Whilst many were recaptured some still remained, hence the large number. Most other rivers do have plenty of small but hungry brown trout in them 6-8 inches average size
We get plenty of brown trout, I've pulled some beautiful fish from silverburn River on fly spinner and bread or worm 🪱, my pb this was over 20 years ago was 4lb 8oz took on a butcher fly but I rarely get much over the 1.5lb mark and I bought a pen knife 6 years ago and I notch it it every time I catch a wild brown over 2lb, it's got 5 notches but if it was for every fish over 1.5lb their would be no room left for new notches. Apologise for my life story and yes we get alot of brown trout of good size.
@@robbieallan6522 Hi, i also fish silverburn river with spinners, but iv only caught the tiny brown trout that swim around(about 10 inches long). Is there any way to catch the larger ones? The water there normally seems pretty shallow, a bit too shallow for large brown trout, sea trout and salmon.
Are you allowed to fish that reservoir with kayaks?
SJ Osborne. The Isle of Man Fly Fishers has permission to fish only on certain days and between certain times. We have to have insurance, safety boat and all risk assessments in place to get permission. You also obviously have to be a member of the club to be covered by the insurance. New members are welcome even if it's just to get involved with the kayak fishing
Where is that mate looks really nice even where the falls is?
Hi Mark. It's above Molly Quirks Glen in Onchan. Park up at the top entrance to the glen then walk under the road and make your way up stream. It's very over grown but good fun
Geoff Thomas thanks that's great looks lovely I'll take a walk up one day I think just trying to look for new places to go either in the season or in the sea so if ya ever fancy fish one day let me know😀
a lot fish.. nice
The fly was nothing special, just a home tied bait fish pattern. Not too big about 3 inches with a bit of sparkle and some eyes glued on.
Hi mate , what fly or lure were you using? thanks. Also I live near Southampton and was wondering if it's possible to fly fish mackerel from shore. Thanks
Think the song title is at the end off the video. It's just a free song which comes with the edit format from go pro
song name please?
To get to this spot you need to cross the river just by the shore pub and go up past the holiday cottages. You then head towards the outer breakwater and go left before you go down the steps. Follow the path through the ferns at each fork in the path go right then drop down the rather steep but well worn path to the rocks. Go left on the rocks and fish the deep gully. Di 8 15lb leader, just about any fishy looking fly will work if the fish are there
+Geoff Thomas Where you`re fishing is known to us locals as The Ballan Rock.
Hi Johnny I was using a Go Pro Hero 3 with the elasticated head strap.
Port Erin is a beautiful place! I don't remember it being so sandy - the last time I went there! :)
Great video - What camera are you using? I need to record my happy memories @ Ballure!
Damn you! I'm jealous! - I've just come back from visiting my mum @ Ramsey - (fishing Ballure/ Inje/Cring and Sulby). Can you tell me what kind of line and 'lure' you used? And how did you get to that spot? Where did you park? Thank you. John
By Ek another luni like me. Always a panga on the side of the sack. I love the buttercup yellow and the edge to the fins. Worth all the effort as there are so few wild places left to fish. You join the status of true piscator.
What type of sinking line were you using? Is that just behind the Laxey breakwater?
Hi Sonja. Yes just round from the breakwater. I was using a Di 8 fly line (sinks at 8 inches per second in fresh water) but any fast sinking line will do
Thanks Geoff. Will give it a go at Xmas time when I am next on the island.
did you catch that fish in a stocked lake?
You could do with a machete :)
Well done, Geoff !! I now know where I can add Pollock to my fly-caught list. If I cross the big pond, can you show me the ropes ? What about Cod ? Do they venture into that spot from time to time ?
Msquad321 hi, not had any Cod from that mark as yet. Have had Ballen Wrasse and Coal fish. Also had Gurnard and Mackeral just a bit further of shore in my Kayak. If you do get over this side of the pond give me a shout would be a pleasure showing you around
