My collection of open reel tape machines is up to almost 70 different machines, all different makes and models. I'm an EE and I service them all myself. I have one each of the A77 MkI through MkIV, but the first three are still waiting for me to service them (most importantly, replace the RIFA and FRAKO capacitors, trimmer potentiometers, etc.). So I have not had an opportunity to listen to any of my A77s until just last night. A few weeks ago, I purchased a MkIV half-track standard speed in already-fully-serviced condition. I finally had a chance to listen to it last night. The A77s have several quirks that are not shared by later machines from other manufacturers (e.g. TEAC tape decks), but this gives the A77s a lot of "personality". Which is the whole reason that I am an open reel tape deck collector / enthusiast. My MkIV sounds lovely! 😎👍❤️

Enjoyed your presentation along with your philosophic outlook on a "by-gone era"... which I never left, come to think of it. A Lifetime of Recording No Regrets

The most complex A77 (Dolby) to calibrate ! And actually also more complex than the B77 / PR99 calibration.

With a properly calibrated A77 (IE. bias / EQ / Repro) dolby is unnecessary.

What a well-made, and lovely tribute to this mythic and so desirable (in its time) machine.

The A77‘s mechanical design and Papst motors are pretty much indestructible and were the benchmark for the industry. I did a internship at the Uher factory in Munich when the tried to launch a competitor to the B77. What a catastrophe! Even with their decades of experience building single motors decks, they couldn’t come up with a design for a reliable 3 motor, 10 1/2 inch reel deck. They were late to the party and messed up big time. The warranty claims for the SG 630/631 alone were a huge nail in the company’s coffin…

There are no IC's in the audio circuitry of the A77.

Lovely video and well presented. If I did not have one (which I do mark 4) I’d immediately get one. I love mine and for the reasons you state.

i have 2 Mk3 A77's Both with DolbyB a 4 track and a 2 track the 2 track needs the Recording Board re-capped as playback is great but when i record it is terrebly distorted the 4 track Records and Play's back great the only thing that i dislike about the A77's is that it has no pause button, but they put one on the B77's theis machines are probably both 50 years old and still going strong my Ferrograph Logic 7 that i bought new in 1978 died in 1995 and spare parts are scarce and expensive so i will not be getting that fixed but the Revox machines can be fixed easy as their are loads of spares

The Maxell tape is far from a few years old. This Maxell tape is between 35 to 27 years old. In my opinion Maxell made the best cassette tape and "reel to reel" tape. Once the Maxell tape has a chance to bathe in the open air, it will deteriorate fairly quickly and leave lots of oxide on your Sony heads. That's a VERY nice Sony recorder. In a few more years (5-10 yrs) we will be able to buy high quality cassette tape. You got scammed by this Polish company. These guys are operating out of a Crack House in a city ghetto and scamming anyone who comes along. Keep buying (new or old) stock of Maxell or Sony Low Noise. Thanks for your work on the tape comparison. Good Job.
