And it just happened!!! Booked a gig at Carnegie Hall this Christmas. Gonna be singing there with the Essential Voices USA Choir as part of the New York Pops annual Christmas concert there. Now I need advice on how to take in the moment and not feel nervous.
Which headjoint did you get?
Now you gotta answer that famous question.... HOW DO YOU GET TO CARNEGIE HALL?!!!

On behalf of oboists, thanks for showing the oboe guy! Looks like it all went really well, and you did a great job of showing us your crazy-busy schedule while living it and getting it all done. Congrats on what look to have been a really successful concert with the Mahler. How did the other concerts that weekend go?
the concerts the next day went wonderful as well!!! thanks for asking!!! and of course i showed the oboe guy. i love oboists!! :-)

The vibes of this are so slay ❤️❤️❤️🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
thanks girlieeee
Old woman?? ‘Scuse me? Lol
LOL!!!
This is amazing!!! Mainly seeing a lot of Broadway shows, I do have a HUGE love for the Symphony Orchestra..... that elegance, the thrills, and the magic of what these 50-piece musicians do on stage. Here in NYC..... NY Philharmonic, NY Pops, NYC Chamber Orchestra, etc!! As a singer (with also playing saxophone on the side), a bucket list goal for me is to do a concert singing with a full symphony behind me..... doing Musical Theater, Pop, and Jazz Standards.
i think we should collectively call this Gill-iard (like Juilliard but gilliard bc Gill is teaching us)
HAHAHHAHAAHA the gilliard school of music😍
This is a fantastic video Gill - a great guide for first-time symphony-goers
thank you so much!!!!! im so glad it was helpful!
@@gill.flutes You're welcome. BTW, congrats on the Carnegie gig (am I allowed to say that here?)
@@TimmyTickle thank you so much!!! yes you’re allowed to! LOL
Congrats on making it through your first audition and turning a stressful experience into growth!! I’m in the midst of audition prep right now and this vid was just the motivation I needed today to stay positive and keep going ✨
thank you so much!! that first audition is SUCH a big milestone! you will do amazing… good luck, and let me know how it goes!! xoxox
Susan is good.
I hate to break this to you, but if you are not in the top 10 flutist that show up for auditions, you and/or your family will be wasting thousands upon thousands of dollars. Although you might benefit from being less nervous as you do more auditions, it won't change your playing level. You need to push yourself to reach an incredibly high standard and then audition. Otherwise you will just be one of the hundreds of others who really get nowhere. What also makes it harder is the fact that some auditions are absolutely rigged. Many people think this is a myth, but it absolutely is not. It's a vicious industry that you have chosen to enter.
i appreciate this, but you aren’t telling me anything i don’t already know!
@@gill.flutes Well obviously you don't know. Otherwise you wouldn't be showing up at auditions that you cannot possibly win, especially with a static vibrato.
@@yishihara55527 you have genuinely no idea the level of my playing at that audition nor the level of playing of anyone else that took the audition. this advice is negative & unsolicited- if you don’t think i (or others) have a place in this industry, you clearly have missed the message of both this video and my entire online presence. the beauty is, no one is forcing you to watch me play or share my life, so you are welcome to mind your own business!
What happened to you to make you so bitter? How many failed auditions did you take before it led to you offloading your insecurities onto other people? And what inside you even lets you feel that the mask of internet anonymity justifies making such rude and condescending remarks, as if there is not a real person on the other end? Many questions...
I love going to orchestras! Unfortunately, i don't have orchestra money right now, but when I do, i'll be sitting on the balcony. 😂
amazing!!!!! yes one thing about going to the orchestra is that it can be pricey. once you feel a bit more comfortable to spend the money, see if your local orchestra has rush tickets!!
Wait, is that western??
yes!! i did my undergrad there :-)
The TS seriously needs to hire you to do their socials. 🎉
someone get them on the phone!!!!
My favourite thing is when two musicians giggle a little together over something i most likely have no idea about
HAHAHA I LOVE THIS TOO
I like this video concept; thanks for sharing! Love Brahms too! (cause I know everyone is wondering...back orchestra is my favorite cause I feel like it's best of both worlds: I'm close AND I can still see everyone)
also a fantastic suggestion!!!
Gill! please move that plant in your practise room to somewhere with some sun! (Unless it's fake)
hahaahha! my practice room gets TONS of sun, its south facing!!! dont worry! the window sill is already full, but those two get lots of sun still :)
Fab! Loved the video!

Hiya!! Your vlog style is a lot of fun to watch. You seem to have boundless energy, which may just be a being-young thing, but you seem to be using it productively. At your age, my life was kind of like your life, except with oboe reeds, a VERY temperamental teacher, and with SCTV as my only connection to Canada. These days, my practice schedule is a little less rigid than it used to be, but I still keep involved with music, and your reminders to go practice are much appreciated.
this is so kind- thank you so much, and im so glad you enjoy my videos!! im so glad you still stay involved with music- its the best isnt it?! :)
All the best Gill 👏🎵💯⭐🌹
Your beat is clear. Staying relaxed is important. Any tension you carry in the arms and shoulders is communicated to the ensemble, and wears you down. The trick to conducting long works is to think your only conducting 12 bars at a time, and not an hour long symphony. God bless, and as you say Go Practice!
thank you!!!!!! hehe go practice
I learned how to become a conductor, watching Bugs Bunny as a kid

Im doing my first musical audition ever in a few weeks. I’m a freshman clarinet player in Tennessee auditioning for all state honor band and orchestra and I have been trying to apply some of your advice and thoughts to my own preparation. I just wish I had people to mock audition for. There are two people in my band that are anywhere near my level as a musician, and I don’t know any adult musicians other than the two band directors. It’s kind of sucking right now but I think it’ll be okay! I’m just excited to experience a real audition
you will be amazing!! best of luck!!! xoxo
how did it go?
@@kai_ller I was 12th chair in the top band. 12th out of 25 in top band, 50 in both bands, and 234 total auditionees. The top 10 chairs in the top band go to all state, so I was 2nd alternate for all state. I had a 750 of 800 on prepared peices, 320 of 400 on scales, but a 300 of 800 on sightreading 😭. I would have been 2nd chair if not for sightreading. It was really a great experience and was definitely not expecting to do as well as I did. I’m now preparing an audition for the Knoxville youth orchestra in august.
@@RainboTea_TMnice job!
This is one of my favorite pieces in the flute repertoire. You played it beautifully :-) You and your accompanists were one musical entity. Wonderful
My audition is today
You got this :)) I have a performance today
how did your exam and performance go besties?!
Impressive! You are such a brave lady. Thanks so much for sharing your adventure. Listening to you always cheers me up and helps me put a bad day behind me. ❤
Im prepping for an audition right now too and rly enjoyed this! ❤ I know what u mean about wanting to take risks and show your personality vs. playing everything "correctly"
good luck at your audition!!!❤❤
thank you so so much for this video! im an undergrad in flute performance currently and my dream is to be an orchestral musician. to see such an honest look at the audition process is amazing and also super encouraging. thank you so much!! this is an amazing video :) happy practicing!!
