I work with oil paint mainly now, but I still paint with acrylics. I love silver and gold leaf and often incorporate them into my paintings recently discovered cold wax medium. I’ve only touched the surface on this, but I’ll be putting out more videos as I learn more about this exciting medium.

Welcome and thank you to my channel. I am a beginner using cold wax medium, but I found it to be a very exciting medium with endless possibilities. I’ve seen Benny paintings in my research over the past several weeks done by many artists the way that they use medium helps their paintings to really be unique and stand out.
I started using it on the sky in this painting, and although it is an aggressive endeavor as a beginner, I’m pleased with the results .

😱OH MY…I did not mention to be sure to wait at least 20 minutes or longer for glue to dry before applying your leafing! Longer is best! Even overnight:) I recommend that you also wait overnight before you seal it after you’ve completed applying your leafing.  You’ve got this!! This method is for gold, silver or copper leaf! This is a very fast video just to highlight certain parts of what I did to paint these wings. There was a lot of layering. Most of the colors were mainly titanium white, iridescent white, Paynes grey, metallic blue and fluid silver. So Interesting! I have not been doing some pouts for awhile, but. When I first saw your painting, I thought it was one of mine! SO Similar! I have never tried this! What kind of wax are you using? Does the wax prevent scratches, does the wax protect it or enhance the painting? Thank you
The wax is Dorland’s Cold Wax Medium, made by Jacquard. I had initially varnished it with an acrylic high gloss varnish but did not like it. So, Instead of varnishing with a matte or satin acrylic varnish which would’ve taken care of the shine I did not like, I learned about this method. There’s no issue with scratches the wax protect’s it. You can either buff it or leave it alone for a very Matt finish and it does enhance the painting. Try it on a small painting you won’t mind experimenting with- and try it. That’s the best way to see if you’d be happy with the results:) .

What type of gold leaf do you use?
@tamara9869 I use Mona Lisa by speedball, i also will sometimes use Barnabas Blattgold. These are imitation gold, a combination of a few different metals, but am pretty sure Blattgold makes real gold leaf as well as some of the brands.
Mary here:) please give the adhesive no less than 20 minutes to dry before applying your silver, gold or copper leafing. Longer is better…even over night! You’ve got this!!

I have recently experienced the same issue with my Byzantine icons with the quality of the Monalisa brand adhesive and the Gold leaf. I had to work it twice the amount of time. I wonder if the Monalisa is lessening their quality? Like all corporations are doing lately. I am going to give it another chance and see if buying another batch of Gold leaf, because this was disappointing with the quality I had from earlier years. Thank you for sharing. I wouldn't have known otherwise what everyone else was experiencing.

Hi, after trying both I decided to stay with Speedball Mona Lisa adhesive. There are others out there, and I encourage you to try more than one, experimenting on small substrates until you find the one you like. Have fun with it:)

The instructions say at least 20 minutes 30 on some. I leave it on for several hours sometimes overnight it has an open time of about 18 hours. I find that the longer I leave it on the better it sticks:) some adhesive you can leave on for 24 to 30 hours. It depends on the brand, but if you go longer then it loses the adhesive quality.

I had this same issue with Barnabas adhesive, changed the color of the gold leaf and had black streaks

What brand of adhesive did you use? What type of varnish did you use to seal your creation?
I used speedball’s Mona Lisa brand adhesive. I used Golden MSA Varnish to seal it.
The artist’s discretion- and there’s always exceptions to the rules.

The wings are absolutely stunning! I love them 😍 I’ve watched all the videos in the angel wings series but am having trouble finding the answer as to what went wrong. I think I remember you stating you sealed the silver leaf with varnish? A couple coats maybe? Was the issue because the varnish was oil based and the paste used was water based? I’ve heard you can use oil based over water based but not the other way around. I’m just curious.
Hi, and thank you! I used water based sealer - for the silver leaf. It’s a lot like water based varnish - it sealed the surface so that the paste would not stick to it. So after figuring that out, i took some sandpaper and went over the surface to give it back some “tooth” so the paste would stick. Does that help? Best, Mary

This is absolutely gorgeous! I love the surprising colors … and the tree trunk is so intricate! Your resin cited beautifully … and I love the tip about laying a poster board over the art piece. Resin scares me but I do it once in a while. Your art is stunning.

The odor of the sealant went away as soon as it dried. I painted the blue heron on this piece. That too is in one of my videos. Thanks so much again for your questions! I love the feedback💕😀
