Page Turners Plus "Conversation" with Barbara Jenkins author of "De Righest Place"
This conversation between Barbara Jenkins and Page Turners Plus about “De Rightest Place” demonstrates the dynamism of the written word. As the writer and the reader engage with the same work, their paths must largely converge. But as one is the creator, and the other the consumer; as each approaches the novel from a path she or he alone has trod on this earth, the journey of each through the novel must inevitably diverge at crucial junctures.

Page Turners Plus "Reflections" on "De Righest Place" by Barbara Jenkins
Просмотров 8921 день назад
In "De Rightest Place" Barbara Jenkins shows the reader a community buoyed up by classic Trinidadian joie de vivre, even in the face of daunting challenges. These are our Reflections on how the writer pulled us into the story by balancing high jinks and horror.
Page Turners Plus "Conversation" with Ingrid Persaud author of "The Lost Love Songs of Boyise Singh"

Ingrid Persaud's superpower is her prowess at constructing characters. This electrifying conversation with Page Turners Plus about her novel "The Lost Love Songs of Boysie Singh", opens a window into her creative process; notably revealing the intricate care required to deliver credible, proportionate portrayals of characters for whom the author feels no particular sympathy.

In this Page Turners Plus discussion, we reflect on the moral contortions and transactional calculations the women of Ingrid Persaud's “The Lost Love Songs of Boysie Singh” engage in, for love of a bad man.
Page Turners Plus "Conversation" with Andie Davis author of the novel "Let Me Liberate You"
Просмотров 942 месяца назад
Andie Davis’ conviction that Caribbean societies must urgently engage in uncomfortable conversations about colour and class, those vestiges of colonialism which continue to plague us, is as deeply held as her awareness that artists who force those discussions must do so with humility and respect. In this conversation with Page Turners Plus, she explains why, in her novel "Let Me Liberate You", ...

In “Let Me Liberate You” Andie Davis reveals the ridiculous in the familiar. The novel intentionally makes the reader laugh; but it also invites us to question our complacency with the status quo, and our motivations when we challenge it.

If aplomb was a person, Astrid Roemer would be it. True to the spirit of her novels, in this conversation with Page Turners Plus, she responds to hard questions directly, with good humour, and without peradventure.
Page Turners Plus "Reflections" on Astrid Roemer's novel "Off White"

Unflinching, unvarnished, unrestrained, and uncompromising, Astrid Roemer’s novel “Off White” is unapologetically confrontational. It is a reckoning with ageing, sexual trauma, and trying family dynamics; a command to the reader to participate in uncomfortable conversations. This is how Page Turners Plus responds to its call.
Page Turners Plus "Conversation" with Jacqueline Crooks author of "Fire Rush"

In this conversation with Page Turners Plus, Jacqueline Crooks describes how dub reggae riddims, a force both ancestral and futuristic, was an abeng horn, harnessing the alienation of a generation of black British youth towards rejecting a status of living death. She explains why the riddims of her generation guide her examination of oppression, rage, and resistance within the pages of her nove...

When Jacqueline Crooks’ Fire Rush introduces us to a post Windrush Babylon of the 1980s, where black youth rave, dream of Zion, and respond to calls for song with “raze it! raze it!” dub reggae riddims; it also asks, “who art to be destroyed?”. This is our answer.
Page Turners Plus "Conversation" with Myriam Chancy author of "Village Weavers"
Просмотров 795 месяцев назад
Being as enamoured with Myriam Chancy the scholar, as we are with Myriam Chancy the writer, we invited both personas into the room for this interview. What ensued was a conversation as much about Haiti's golden years in the 1940s, as it was about Sisi and Gertie, childhood best friends, coming of age at a time when great promise disintegrated into tragic loss.

Myriam Chancy's “Village Weavers” captured our minds and ignited our emotions. We rhapsodised over subtle historical nuggets woven into the fabric of the story, chortled at the antics of the novel’s recreational revolutionary, drew swords over notions of class privilege, and took solace in the plot’s affirmation of the possibility of redemption
Page Turners Plus "Conversation" with Cleyvis Natera author of "Neruda On The Park"

In speaking with Page Turners Plus about her novel “Neruda on the Park”, Cleyvis Natera addresses deficits between intentions and outcomes. She charts the downward spiral of ostensibly protective silences towards volatile ignorance, and explains the hidden charges built into the saviour complex. She suggests that a merging of elements of the Caribbean storytelling tradition within the Eurocentr...

Cleyvis Natera's "Neruda on the Park" is a novel that confronts the political fallout of gentrification; but it is as much about personal relationships, as it is about big political questions. It explores dynamics between parents and children, husbands and wives, siblings, colleagues, lovers, and friends. This is a novel that encourages us to listen more intently, both to ourselves and our comm...
Page Turners Plus "Conversation" with Soraya Palmer author of "The Human Origins of Beatrice Porter
Просмотров 1297 месяцев назад
In this conversation with Page Turners Plus, a contemplative Soraya Palmer defends the didactic potential of storytelling. She explains, too, that writing from a place of compassion is not meant to exonerate the guilty, but to portray the transgressor as a complex, multidimensional organism, capable of growth and positive transformation. Though she insists that people and societies are complex,...

'...whose unique genius is to... produce real life stories that are too unbelievable for fiction'❤
Isn't Solo true to his name ?
It's short for Solomon, his last name; but yes, Solo is appropriate.
Why am I finding this reading so funny 😂(you do know the basis of humour...)
This was only part of the mural painting high jinks. It gets even funnier.
I‘m reading this now and can’t put it down 😅 It was great hearing all of your insights. Do any of the panelists have their own RUclips channels?
Hi Adrienne, no, none of us has an individual channel but please explore this one. We read amazing books! Thanks for watching. This is Paula by the way.
Very interesting...good job panel. Tony didn't we, in SVG, hear about a Vincentian who was a member of Boysie's gang...so much so that this Vincentian's offspring is now in a similar enterprise... I'm prepared to guess that Doris is a buxom red woman...clear preference among Boysie's ilk😅
From Mana Lala, "No matter what, I never expected Boysie would do me this. Marry a big bamsee red woman?"
This is funny 😂...beautifully read... Reminder to Francine : difference between schooling and education; plus following CXC (CSEC & CAPE), there's specific critical thinking injected into curricula (yes, defending our hard wrought system which is still a work in progress ).
This author is real and brave where angels fear...
Sexy text😅
I'm moved and can't stop smiling🎉😂❤THANKS
We love you Astrid! ❤ 🎉
...echoes of '...the one-armed sister' unavoidable given our raw history
...between 'devil ' and 'angel ', there's always continuum where real characters are formed and executed...
Thanks for the thoroughness of this discussion.
Interesting that you consider it thorough. When we stopped recording, we all agreed that this book is so intricate that we only skimmed its surface in our discussion.
Gosh - this is so jam packed with info i'm definitely going to have to listen twice! Thank you all for another excellent interview/discussion!
Thank you for this discussion! There are so many layers to this book and I loved being an observer of your reflections. I will be facilitating a discussion of Hungry Ghosts this week in a book club I’m looking forward, hoping for a discussion as rich as the one you guys conducted. Thank you again!
Love this Prologue! Listened twice. This novel...at least aspects of it...seems to be one of female subversion for the survival of one's truth. A certain panelist is pretty uncomfortable 😊
Caribbean History : the importance of our story being told from our perspectives....thanks for this work.
Karen Lord's breadth of reference has made this discussion so exciting and yes, hopeful. Caribbean writing has had these mixed genres for quite some time...not a great deal, but our region is deep as opposed to wide😊 Thanks for this !
Seems to be quite an interwoven tapestry...thank you for presenting your unraveling.
Great interview. This author will be on my radar
Enjoyed this...thanks.
I absolutely loved this interview. It reminded me of the times I spent in Professor Collins’ classroom many years ago as she told us stories and asked us about our impressions of the literature we were reading. ❤
I enjoyed this discussion. It seems that he is returning to the Haitian griots of the early 20 th century: Jean Price-Mars et al. Glad you asked the question child abuse. How do we remove the causes?
Sounds like Tony is a masochist. I agree with Paula. This novel echoes in many ways Emmelie prophète's LES VILLAGES DE DIEU.
Meant Tony the character, not Tony Regisford.
This was such a lovely conversation a between all of you! I'm especially appreciative of the way violence against children (physical and emotional) and poverty were discussed - these were some of the more difficult scenes to translate because the just had to be done right. There's no mistake that Michel-Rolph Trouillot's Silencing the Past feels so linked to this novel, the two authors are part of the same family. Thanks so much for reading and for taking so much care in discussing Ti Tony and Franky's world.
Interesting discussion....sounds like a great read
It is a good read! Thanks for watching.
Beautifully written! Another great interview by Page Turners Plus! Thank you

I've read this book and I think you need to read Daughters of the Stone which is the first in this series to understand who the characters are and fill in the blanks of some of the commentary you made
Thanks for that Sharon. We came to that conclusion ourselves after speaking with Dahlma. Our conversation with Dahlma will be released shortly.
Thank you to the Producers of these series. Thank you for featuring ALL our writers. Congratulations and best wishes to all writers featured here. We are proud of you all. Writing is one of MY passions as well. HAPPY NATIONAL HEROES DAY! God bless you all.
Congratulations to my treasured niece Peggy Carr, a talented, gifted, outstanding Vincentian lady of whom we are very proud! Keep your passion going. Exhilarating writing. Looking forward to your next releases. Peace and love always. Auntie Cherry
16:34 There are plenty of black Bermudians who participate in its wealth. As of 2021, Bermuda has a per capita GDP of 114,000 USD, making it the richest black - majority nation on earth. It is governed by a Labour party majority whose 34 of 36 MPs are black. The current Premier is worth $47 million USD. Black Bermudians own land, own businesses, own property. Those who are impoverished have been sold out by their own Labour government who are content and complacent enough to let them remain so while enriching themselves.
Thanks for that. As we mentioned during our discussion of the novel, we're all quite ignorant of Bermuda’s history and current circumstances. The Drowned Forest is a wonderful novel - not just in terms of its artistic qualities, but also because it so skillfully invites us to learn more. Thanks for helping us along that journey. Paula.
@@IsisXenaNannyMaroon Thank you for your reply!
Eric's comment at 35:33 sent me looking for Rene Depestre's "Hadriana in All My Dreams". It's a stunning novel by a brilliant author. Read it!
Like Eric, I rated it 4 over 5. Could not put it down; so nuanced and lyrical.
Naipaul's self-loathing ironically created literary masterpieces...then again personal angst is generally productive.
Love it Lafleur
