RV Off-Grid Living in the Northwoods | Part 1
Can't believe we can say we've been living off grid in our RV on our own piece of land in northern Wisconsin for one whole month! Fall has been BEAUTIFUL in the northwoods, but getting solar set up was slow at first (with naturally a cloudy, rainy week). We had to wait on the supplies, then the kit we bought just wasn't as straight forward as we had planned. So it was pivot after pivot, trying to make it all work. (We kind of felt like the odds were against us for a while...)
But we finally figured out how to harness solar to power our RV batteries, recharge and use all of our outlets while running the generator, and got into a good routine with refilling our water tote and RV tanks. Pleas...

We finally did it! Or did we? | Pulling our RV onto our northwoods property

This is everything we accomplished during the two weeks leading up to being able to pull our RV onto our off-grid RV pad that we made on our 20 acres in northern Wisconsin. It's been a LONG time coming, and honestly was a bit emotional when it FINALLY happened! Stressful? Yes. Highly rewarding? Yes. Creating Our Off Grid RV Pad on our Raw Land | Time to pivot

We really had high hopes for our 700 ft. long circular driveway on our land, but getting started mid July after an incredibly rainy spring was pressing us on time with our limited resources. So we finally (late August) decided to pivot our plans, and create an RV pad closer to the road so that we can start living on it before leaving in November. A Wet and Frustrating Summer | Our Wisconsin Homestead in the Northwoods

(Finally) Getting to Work on the Homestead | Wood Chipping

This season of RAIN for us on our land has been challenging (to say the least). We've been here since May 1st, but have run into delay after delay. Our tractor? Still stuck in the mud. We looked to hire out some jobs, and even those have been delayed. So we did what we could and rented a wood chipper for a day, turning last year's trees into useful wood chips for our trails and driveway puddles...

Hi guys. Good start on your solar. We have used solar for years on boats and our 5th wheel. You are fighting shade and a little amperage drop due to length of wire run. In the cold weather you will need a lot of power to be free from running the generator so much. When you can afford it, please consider adding at least 3-4 more batteries and increase your solar to a minimum of 1600-2000 watts. That way you can run everything during the day in your 5th wheel and still be charging your battery bank. Otherwise you are constantly running a deficit which will be frustrating. However, for now, it looks like your on the right path. Keep up the good work and be sure to maximize your solar by double checking the angle to the sun and also that the panels are facing due south. And don't underestimate how much shade will impact the solar output. Again, keep up the good work and enjoy your new property! 👍

I met you both and chatted for a while when we stayed at the bison ranch at the end of September this year, (we were parked near to you with our class A and the two German Shepard dogs) I hope you are enjoying the challenge and satisfaction of reclaiming and building your own place, it is something I seem to have spent most of my life doing both in my native England as well as here in Wisconsin, it gives you a feeling of achievement when you finish a project, although from my experience the projects keep expanding and expanding! You did the right thing buying a full-size backhoe, I have a Ford 555D to ‘help’ me here and, as you know they make life so much easier, I just don’t understand the people who buy these very expensive, small garden tractors/ hoes which are basically only “toys” and wonder why they bend and break them. "Iits getting real", for sure, the struggles are real <- new channel name? :) I have seen with wet land, you need twice as much fill and gravel as you think. soft is soft and drying out will not help much when your soft soil is that deep. hoping for the best.

Ha, that should be the new channel name. 🤪 Man, have we learned that lesson. We found digging out the wet clay and muddy topsoil has helped tremendously. You're right - if the soft soil is deep, "drying" doesn't do much.

Do you have starlink for internet out at your site?

    • @thiscreativehouse
      @thiscreativehouse Месяц назад

We do! We got it almost three years ago (back when there was a waitlist) so that we always had internet when traveling full time. We should have enough trees cleared at the property for StarLink to work well.

I talked to a guy about extending our driveway on our raw land and he said the trees are easier to knock over and push into a pile roots and all if you don't cut them down before because of the leverage you get.

Jason is finally getting around to watching and has some tips for getting unstuck. First, if you had extra weight in the bucket it would help keep you straight and you would be less likely to sway back into the bad mucky parts. Second, this tractor should have left and right brakes. So if he uses just the left in order to go left it will help. Might be good for next time you run into these types of problems. Hoping you guys have your RV out by now! Happy Labour day!

@@lorettaandjasonoffgrid Thank you, Jason!! 😃 That backhoe is TOO big for the tractor, so it definitely pulls us allll over. Also, you're right. We SHOULD have brakes. But alas, we do not. 🙄 Thanks, old tractor. 😆 Getting close!

That wet spot in your driveway that you though was a spring could very well be a clay bathtub filled with some junk material. The clay won't let the water drain, and then the junk squishes when driven over.

I'm building just north of wausau, and it has been a very wet year, I feel your pain. I just found and binged your series tonight. You should really consider renting a dozer for a month. It can strip all of the top soil and clay without getting stuck and it will blow through all of your stumps much quicker than the back hoe. I love the Fl panhandle state parks in March, too! Good luck with tonight's storms...

We're staying about an hour north of Wausau (our property is hour and half northwest)! So I can imagine you're a little muddy as well. A dozer is absolutely what we need - it's what the guy we were going to hire would use. We almost considered just selling the backhoe and getting a bulldozer instead (not helpful for scooping, though!). Really we just need to make friends with the neighbor down the road who has two. :) These storms... UGH.

3:01 😂😂😂 And also I feel your pain with the rain.. it's been terrible. And now it's dry! So weird! Omg watching you guys tag team the tractor was fantastic. Again, feel your pain. Great job using the backhoe as an extra arm. Jason does it all the time with the bucket to get out of tricky situations. Felt the relief 100x when you got it unstuck!!! PHEW! How frustrating and time wasting! 16:51 😂😂😂 Praying you can get this all resolved soon. Maybe just a few loads of gravel would help? Not sure. Looking forward to the next update! ✌️🇨🇦🇺🇸

@@thiscreativehouse the back how will be so useful in maintaining the property, but you really do need the dozer to just finish clearing the site and removing all the overburden so you can get down to some decent subgrade. Friends with dozers are the best!
