1907 Victoria, BC
"A 3 minute cinematograph taken on May 4,1907 in Victoria, B.C. The fellow who filmed it, William H. Harbeck, also filmed the aftermath of the San Francisco earthquake in 1906. Harbeck was a passenger on the Titanic but did not survive. The last bit of the film (at about the 2 minute part) shows (a glimpse of) the building of the Empress Hotel. Looks like a tram ride down Government Street as they end up at the Harbour."

It's crazy to think that we live in an entirely new civilization now, everyone (including the videographer) has passed on, leaving behind their descendants which now build up off what they had left behind. Being in a generation where I can look back a hundred years and see such drastic change is very cool. We're the first generation who can look back a hundred years and see how everything has evolved.

Notice that they drove on the other side of the road? BC changed over in 1922.

Great film! RUclips needs more stuff like this. I wonder if Harbeck is the cinematographer who Lawrence Beesley references in his book on the sinking of the Titanic. If so, he also shot footage of the near miss of the Titanic and the SS New York when the Titanic was pulling out of the Southhampton docks. His film did not survive the sinking either, of course.

Filming on government street through town and ending at the inner harbour at the empress hotel to the left and parliament building at the end of the street in the distance on the right. Love the video thank you!

The sidewalks on the Causeway were wooden! I wonder when they were replaced by cement? This is like going into a time machine - I lived in James Bay for 3 years.

Notice that traffic drove on the left side of the road, as was normal in the British Empire. By the time of the "1926 Old Victoria British Columbia Footage" video that's on this site, traffic was on the right as it is now. I would guess that this change was made in order to conform with the American convention of driving on the right.

capralean Basically yes. British Columbia switched sides in 1922. Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec always drove on the right. The Maritime Provinces switched throughout the 1920s, while Newfoundland switched over in 1947 _before_ joining the Canadian federation.
