1998 Subaru Legacy update

This is all the lights in my 1998 Subaru Legacy L 2.2L Auto AWD. Hope you liked it.
Not sure if you or anybody else will ever see this comment, but what are all of the little square green/orange bulb things underneath every button? I’ve never seen that kind of bulb before. I am pretty sure the T3 bulb does not light up all of the buttons, those little things with the green/orange tips are tiny bulbs that are soldered on. I have no idea how to change those or what kind of bulbs those are.
What was the LED for that was on the motherboard? The first bulb/one you had to grind off???
Super helpful video. Thank you so much
I'm gonna give this a go with sensor cleaner will report back I have no lights and middle vents don't blow much.
How do I fix a clicking noise under the dash driverside that sounds like a blinker?
If it is a constant clicking, even when the car is off, it could be the keyless entry system. Mine started clicking after I swapped the battery. There should be a button that you can press to get it to stop.
Thanks for making this. It helped me immensely!
I just replaced the 194s in my dash cluster and now my dome light only comes on for a second then shuts off again. any ideas? also noted that when the cluster was out entirely the dome light didn't work at all.
The dome light is on a different circuit from the dash cluster. For the dome light it could be a door switch or bulb or even a connection issue. Watch the door lights on the cluster and if they act up when the dome light does its either the door switch or a ground issue at the switch
@@cargeekscott1871 I wouldn't think they would be connected either but they apparently they are. dome light was on, remove gauge cluster from dash, dome light no longer works. So somehow they are connected.
Anyone got a diagram for which browns light up which dash part like speedometer tacometer temp or gas
What do you mean.
How you just turn on dash board lights
maraming salamat po!!! MABUHAY!!!
This was a huge help and finally got my lights fixed. Thank you sir.
Hey Mudder, none of my dash lights work in my 97 subaru at all. I checked the fuse and it is fine. I'm probably needing to replace at least a few bulbs anyway... but before I do, do you think it could be anything else? Also what kind of bulbs are they specifically? I'm hard of hearing and google's captions are never right! :/ Do you know where I can get these bulbs? Also I wanted to say thank you so much for a really great video!
The main bulbs and shifter lifter (automatic) and 194 bulbs all the others are 74 bulbs. And it could be anything from the bulbs to the fuse or the dash light control module (screwed onto panel under steering wheel) or it could be the headlight switch
Easier to remove cluster ...by tilting steering wheel..
It was tilted all the way down. A helpful part would be to take the metal brackets on the top off.
hey this is great! thanks for the info. There need to be more info out there about these old wagons. Owned one years ago and just picked one up again! 1996 legacy outback :D
Thanks great video Now I know how to remove the A/C control.. but I can't seem to find T3 bulbs? do you have a link you could put in the description ? Thanks in advance...
Thanks brah!
If yours is really busted like mine you can just get a replacement unit on eBay for $40, ripped from a junk vehicle. Buy it from someone who accepts returns, swap it out and see if it works again. I figured the electronics on mine were burned out from drink spills so it wasn't worth the trouble of disassembling it(keep in mind that a cleaned out one will be have a shortened life even if it does work again). I'll keep this procedure in mind in case I have this issue again though.
Thank you so much! It really helped me replacing the burnt bulbs of the climate control!
Thank you for this video!
i just finished replacing my whole cluster and man i tell yea the speed sensor is the most annoying thing to put back on lol
I am sooo glad you made this. I don't have t3 bulbs on me, so I know to wait until I do have them.
Wait, these have a Low Gas warning light? Looks like I have more than one bulb burnt out then...
Same here 😅
We're they t5 or t10
The warning lights and blinkers are T5 the bigger main dash lights are T10
@@cargeekscott1871 thank you
Great video buddy! I just bought a 97 outback and none of the temp controls worked. I got in there thanks to this video and found the previous owner spilled a sticky drink down in there and gummed up everything. I cleaned it out really good and its working fine. I didn't even break anything. Thanks again. Saved me hundreds $$$$
I didn't know Napoleon Dynamite's brother Kip did "how to" videos.
Hey do you remember what kind of bulb was for the shifter? Pls help. I cant see what gear im shifting into at night
The automatic uses a T10 (194) bulb. Manuals have no bulb.
Where did you get the LEDs for the guage cluster from?
I got them off of Amazon. The main light are 194(T10) bulbs and the other bulbs are 94(T5) bulbs.
@@cargeekscott1871 you think they are the same for 2001 models?
Yes they are I father has an 02 and the bulbs are the same size just different layout
dude youre a life saver, thanks for the great video!
Are you in the Pittsburgh area? I noticed from your accent. If so, I have a 99 Legacy I might need advice with for changing bulbs... pm me!
Wiil you change your name?
I've got a 99 legacy 2.2 I had to change the motor.
If you still have a radio shack, go an purchase the mini bulbs two to a pack, only a few dollars, then you can use those to replace the bulbs. buy extras as these go out quite often. then you don't have to grind or break anything. have had to replace mine several times. subaru wants about 30 bucks each as they sell you the holder also. Clean the buttons as they get crud on them from spillage in the cup holders, things go back much easier with everything clean.
Are the 74 bulbs the same as T5? I’ve been having trouble getting them to work after switching them around
Melina Kranidis the T5 wedge is also known as 17, 18, 27, 37, 58, 73, 74, 75, 79, 85, 86, and 2721 bulbs. so yes the 74 bulb is a T5
MudderMayhem not sure what the problem is, I tried the original bulbs after the led attempt and they don’t work either now
there is a panel under the steering wheel and there is a box that say illumination on the panel. that could have shorted out. I had to replace it on my car
Hi Mudder, so I'm giving the switch to LED's a shot, and I have to tell you one of my favorite parts of this video is sequence where you say something to the affect "...you can easily get it out" (referring to the dash cluster), and then pause and say "...Well, that wasn't so easy, but I got it out." Yes, that's the way working on cars is for backyard mechanics. Makes me laugh every time. All the best!
Charles Carlson yeah haha I'm still young and still learning. but thanks for watching my video. I may post a better one in the future
Hey Mudder thanks for the video. So you've got T10's for the main gauges, what are the smaller black ones? They didn't 't look like T3's.
Charles Carlson there are the 4 main t10's for the gauges but there are also 2 t5's for the guages as well. The blue LEDs I put in have lasted well but are really starting to bother my eyes. I am soon putting red in for the guages all the other bulbs are also t5's by the way.
I'll give it a shot! Thanks
Hey Mudder, i suspected it's not the light problem for my car, but the green colour sheet of electric wiring things thats not working properly, as i can see some corrosion (not sure how to call it) that is blocking some of the eletric pathway, unlike yours. can you please tell me if i can replace it? i am not sure how to call the sheets
Ng Shyue Chynn you could but I think its easier to replace the whole cluster. just replace the speedo if you do so the miles are correct. i wish you the best of luck with your car.
Hey Mudder, i heard you saying in the video, all the bottom lights are using T5 74 bulbs, is it the same for the fuel pump light too? that one seems bigger size, and the twist socket is bigger too. My car is 1995 subaru legacy, i am missing out the fuel lights atm, wanna change, do you know what size is the socket fot the fuel lights? I am not sure if its the light bulb problem or the socket is not connecting properly.
The fuel light is really a T6.5 but I used a T5 bulb in it just fine. For the fuel light I'd recommend staying with the halogen bulb cause the LED will come on and stay on all the time. The leds pull very little power at all. The T6.5 is the same for the two center bulbs for the speedo and tach but I put T5 bulbs in them as well. All Works fine.
thank you very much! it is realy helpful info! i am ordering from ebay
Mudder, Thanks for the video. That was most helpful for sorting out my 1999 Legacy.
You save my life, and the HVAC light of my OBK! thx from Brazil!!
Hey Mudder, thanks for the videos about swapping dash and instrument panel bulbs in the Subaru. Do you remember if the bulb in the shifter was also a T10 194? I want to order colored LEDs for my 97 Legacy Outback, and want to make sure I get enough to do them all.
LOL, kept watching and got the answer. Sorry!
I tried to mention all the bulb sizes in the video. I'm still not use to making videos. Here soon I'm going to be putting up some videos about the recent changes to my car. People tell me its not worth it to fix it up but it's my first car and I plan to keep it as long as I can.
straight up ruined the dash pulling it out... take the 2 screws that are on top and remove the 2 metal bars... slides right out without ripping the dash up.
not talking shit cuz i did the same thing the first time. just looking out for everybody else
I understand. Mine was already ruined so I didn't care about doing that. I should have mentioned that but forgot. I'm still new at all this.
That’s a useful tip, aaron09090. Thanks!
Nice video, I just got a 1999 Subaru Legacy 2.5. Nice car! That cat just loves you haha
Yikes! Thanks for posting this, it was exactly what I was looking for. I had the dash apart on my son's '98 Legacy last night trying to figure out where the bulbs were for this. After watching how much disassembly you had to do to that HVAC module, I'm thinking he can just live with a dark panel!
Thanks!
Should make a video on Changing the lights in the Climate Control. I need to know how to do that.
Yeah sure. Its very simple but takes time cause the bored is very fragile.
Earned yourself a sub! Cant wait for the video!
Video is being uploaded. I hope it helps.
Just ordered the two small ones in the center of cluster I had some 194 blues at my house. Looks awesome but will look better with the other 2 in.
+matt pompi The smaller ones was T5 74 bulbs
@@cargeekscott1871 most helpful reply ... thanks bro
What's the bulb size for the cluster? The main 4
+matt pompi T10 194 bulbs. I got mine from amazon.
+MudderMayhem awesome thank you. Can you get different colored or just led white
+matt pompi I've seen many different colers. If you get them from Amazon looks for the highest stars and highest reviews
