Grampa Plays Drums
Добавлен 18 июл 2009
Hello! Thanks for stopping by for a look and a listen.
I've been retired for almost a decade, and my 9yr old told me I should be 'RUclipsr' now. As a bonus, it will give my grandkids some entertaining moments, until our next visit.
No pre-listens, rehearsals, multiple takes, or edits, .. I just put on a playlist and go whether I've heard the tune or not.
My childhood was 60/70's music - MoTown to Classic Rock. My teen years were Metal. And today, I struggle to see what it is about new music that my daughter and grandkids love so much - so there will be a lot of content aimed at them: a series called "Grampa Plays: Imagine Dragons" etc.
I hope my grandkids enjoy it, and I hope you do too.

Going Home - 2022 reunion
Просмотров 104Год назад
What a wonderful night .. after 22 years apart, these urban hillbillies reunited again - and fell right into our special porch music we first created summer evenings on Mt.Helix. Steve Peavey (guitar) is currently on tour with the legendary Dwight Yoakam, and still performs with Johnny Mathis and the Grand Ol' Opry. The mighty Eduardo Estrada (bass) is production manager for the San Diego Symph...

Now that my health has stabilized a bit, I'm back behind the kit .. only this time it's configured as a tribute to the Professor, Neil Peart! While I was recovering late last year, I started prowling the web looking for pieces to be able to configure my drums into a 'phantom' set - the unphotographed Yamaha he tested for several days before ultimately deciding to leave Tama for Ludwig. My origi...

Diana Ross - Aint No Mountain High Enough Drum Cover
Chincha (Strunz & Farah)
Просмотров 3,8 тыс.15 лет назад
Chincha by Strunz &Farah. First attempt after five year hiatus from the drums. The song is in 9/8. If I ever get my chops back, I'll upload a better version!
TY! Very fun to watch.
Thank you very much, Daniel :)
Beautifully played!
Thanks Steve - means a lot coming from you :)
Thank you so much for your videos. Anyone who sees your videos is going to want to play the drums. The more symbols the better.
Thanks, I appreciate that. Just trying to give my Grandchildren something to remember me by :)
Excellent!
Glad you liked it Andy!
This phukkin guy did a great job on this iconic song! Liked.
Thank you kindly!
Excellent job!!
Thank you very much!
This video is wonderful.
Thank you so much!
Great cover! Thank you for posting!
Glad you liked it!
Well done- bravo!
Thank you kindly!
Nice! Staying in the pocket is ALWAYS harder than it looks.... even for me. After 40 seconds, I'd want to be "all over the place."
Thank you. Such a great song, first time playing it - and the pocket on that tune is fun to stay in ;)
Nice taste in cars you have - I had a '64 Sport Fury and a '70 Duster drag racer .. Mopar or No car! :D (and before my enlightenment, '68 Cougar and '75 Camaro (BB, NOS fogger, built to the hilt)).
Excellent!
Thank you! Cheers!
Absolutely love this song,! Glad I found your channel🎉
Awesome! Thank you!
Nice
Thank you kindly :)
That is a lot of drums.
Point taken! I'll listen when not behind the kit, and do it again for you (honestly, I'm just happy to be alive and playing again, so I tend to over-do things out of pure exuberance lately). For really faithful playthroughs, there's a fine young man named Colin Williams here on RUclips (he even uses nice vintage kits). Thanks for the comment, and thank you for not hitting the thumbs-down.
@@GrampaPlaysDrums What I said wasn't very nice. I'm more of a small kit viewer. I shouldn't have been so critical. Enjoy your hobby.
I actually have two 4 piece kits on each side of this one - different tools for different jobs. One is for my low volume 'porch music' band (watch the "Going Home - Reunion 2022" video my wife snuck of us) .. the other is my new fave I put together for latin fusion/nuevo flamenco that's 10", 14", 16"kick and a 12" Remo Mondo snare. If you check back in a while, I'll have some videos up of it. Do you play professionally? Love to see your work if I can :)
Wow these two guys are in perect sync!!!
And the old dude in the mirror is a lefty!
Great song, haven't heard it in a while. Enjoyed it.
Thank you! I remember seeing the live video for the song on MTV, and just being floored by how exuberant Simon Phillips was behind the kit - and what an amazing player he was.
You checked all the options boxes on that kit... Nicely done. Word up.
Thank you kindly :)
Somebody got themselves a Christmas
A Merry one at that Richard!
I'm impressed by your song choices , Once upon a time I chose to try and win a contest by counting how many times KGB played "Maggie May" by the end of month I couldn't stand the song. I can listen to it , but I'll tell you what , I didn't win ..............
Why don't you come over, and I'll record you ripping through some faves sometime? PM me your phone number on FaceBook and I'll give you the address :)
@@GrampaPlaysDrums I'm not sure I trust messenger , but we'll figure something out !
I Really like this song , play it all the time !
Yes! The Mighty Gary Novak on drums! "Uninvited" is a powerhouse performance of his too.
They aren't cheap either , nice job .
Averaged out over the 45 years I've played without them, and they were nearly free! :D
Very nice playing, buddy . I like your setup. Your cymbals look and sound great. That drummer who was playing across from you did a much better job. He had more control and better technique, and his drums sounded amazing, especially that cool snare drum, lol.😊 Best wishes, and Merry Christmas.
Thank you .. and yes, the opposing drummer is much better - probably because he's old as the hills (as you can see in the "Word Up" video).
@GrampaPlaysDrums , HI Gramps, lol. That's hilarious. I think the older we get, the more we learn. Just when I think my drums are finally tuned to my liking, I remember the little things that i once heard about, learned, or even firgured out on my own, and I suddenly have a new tone, or pitch that I prefer and want to experiment with. I guess perfection doesn't like to hang around for too long, lol. Hey, tell that drummer who plays across from you that he is just an old copycat. Lol. Keep Rockin', Glen
And a very Merry Christmas to you too!
I'm sure the mics help, still the pre-amps are nice and quiet!
The CQ18T unit has exceeded every hope I had in a mixer :)
Well done Robert! You made it look easy.
Thanks Joe! I've added a lot more content this week - and the sound quality is near perfect now ;)
Good on ya, brother. Love it!
Thank you kindly!
Well delivered, and really like covering the 'original arrangement build' to this great classic Motown song. How to reflect the feeling, man!
Thank you!
Nice cover!
@emmauspraise The Paiste Sound Discs I use are available mainly through special order (Guitar Center, Sam Ash, etc). I've had them for decades now, and love what they bring to the music from Motown especially. Also listen for their use in all the big Springsteen hits (Born to Run). Good luck in finding them!
@jyambor Thanks, and the sweet sounding bells are Paiste Sound Discs
good job bro! hey, where can I find those bells? who makes them?
Paiste Sound Disks #1-5 Not sure if they're still made, but any brand crotales would sound similar.
I just saw your video and I so want a pair of those belss you use in this song have been searching the internet all day but cant find any can you or will you tell me where you got them.
Paiste Sound Disks - no longer made, so look for any crotale brand you like :)
Great cover please keep up the good work. I like to see people playing the song how it was done and not making up things and saying well i put my own twist on it. If your going to do that don't call it a cover. But you did great. Sorry about going off on a rant.
Totally agree with the original full version Drum Cover. This arrangement has creative build to it,- all the way up to a real 'Ain't N0 Mountain High Enough'
I know, I did it just like your videos ... it was simply recorded with the built in mic on the video camera, and the stereo behind me cranked to a measured 95 decibels. I have earplugs in, and Howard Leight shotgun ear muffs on the plugs. No in-ear or headphones - I have severe tinnitus, so I'm reducing the drums and backing music by 55db. When I'm playing, the stereo and the drums sound very far away to say the least.
Poor audio though...
15 years late, but audio finally fixed, lol.
