Chinook Salmon Fall Migration HD 1080p
Thanks to Covid and more recently make-up travel it has been a few years since I've been down to photograph the salmon run in Toronto. This time I was equipped with new cameras capable of filming in slow motion and maintaining focus while doing it. Gotta love Canon.
These are Chinook Salmon and they are an introduced species to the Great Lakes. They are here to stay. The annual migration of adult salmon up our rivers is both magnificent and tragic. The thrill of watching them leap up waterfalls and dams draws oohs and cheers from watching people (especially kids). But this joy should also be tempered with the reality that each of these salmon have but a few more weeks to live. Migrate, bre...

Moose at the Beaver Pond Part 3 HD 1080p
Просмотров 28Год назад
Compare moose and elk rutting behaviour and it is evident there are major differences in their behaviour, physical features and habitats. Both species rely on visual. olfactory (sense of smell) and auditory (sound) cues. Bull elk are far more vocal than bull moose are. It is the cow moose that is the most vocal of the species and the reason has to do with each animal's preferred habitat. Elk li...
White tailed Prairie Dogs HD 1080p
Просмотров 129Год назад
Most people likely don't know there is more than one type of prairie dog. In fact there are four species and none, not one, is a dog. They are ground squirrels of a type. Some like the black-tailed prairie dog (featured in other videos on this channel) are very gregarious and live in large colonies. They out-numbered the bison until ranchers and farmers declared war on them. They were very near...
Moose at the Beaver Pond Part 2 HD 1080p
Просмотров 172Год назад
By the end of the summer a moose calf begins to look a lot like a smaller version of an adult cow moose. food it plentiful and even the beaver pond is worth a visit. It has grown a lot since its birth a few months before. The cow may have given birth to twins but in a habitat where wolves, grizzlies, black bears and cougars are around raising two small calves is a rare feat. She can't be two pl...
Spawning Sockeye HD 1080p

Each summer (depending on the latitude) Sockeye salmon return to the rivers where they first hatched. This little stream is located just outside Juneau, Alaska, by the Mendenhall Glacier. It is my hope that the videos I produce will be of help for educators. To that end I thought it would be interesting to suggest some questions that mught come out of viewing this video. Habitat The opening sho...
Moose Beaver Pond Part 1 HD 1080p
Просмотров 194Год назад
Seeing a bull moose, or any a moose, feeding in a beaver pond in the Fall is not as common as you might think. Moose are far more likely to visit a beaver pond in the Spring when there are fresh, young, nutritionally rich water plants growing. Such plants in the Fall are not nearly as nourishing as those at the beginning of the growing season. But as you will see in Parts Two and Three there ar...
Elk Riding Herd HD 1080p
Просмотров 322Год назад
Spend a few minutes of your day watching elk rut and you cannot help but be impressed by these magnificent animals. This video was filmed in and around Estes Park, Colorado. One exceptionally large bull elk tried to ride herd on a large number of cows. His constant bugling alerted other bulls and he had to keep them from breeding with his cows. None dared challenge him but like sharks circling ...
Black Bear and Cub Salmon Fishing HD 1080p
Просмотров 345Год назад
This particular black bear, a sow, would come to the stream, grab a fish and return to the forest with it. she was very much aware of the large male bear (see Black Bear Chum Salmon) that seem to dominate the vest fishing spot. she was about half his size. In all likelihood the boar could probably of cared less that she was there. Fishing was far from challenging. When the boar left she reappea...
The Nest in the Marsh HD 1080p

In early summer I had the great pleasure of spending the day with Rob on a lake in Southern Ontario. He worked his magic to get us into to the heart of a marsh where to our surprise we came across several pairs of loons and one pair had a nest close by the channel. The call of the loon is one of the iconic sounds of the natural world. The birds are always a treat to encounter whether in South C...
Gone Fishin' Osprey HD 1080p
Просмотров 365Год назад
Osprey rely mainly of fish for food whether you find them in the wilds of the Rocky Mountains, in Ontario's Kawartha Lakes or along the South Carolina Coast. This particular osprey developed a technique that involved hunting from a well-trafficked bridge. People would stroll past, cars would slow to look at it and all the time the osprey kept a keen eye on the waters below. Dolphin, pelicans an...
Orca Hunt HD 1080p

Bigg's Orcas are also known as Transient Orcas. These are the killer whales most tours view on trips from Victoria (BC) and Washington State. Resident orcas are also found in the same area but by agreement are pretty much left alone. Residents feed mainly on salmon while Bigg's are mammal hunters feeding on sea lions, porpoises and in this case seals. While the sequence is not bloody it shows t...

Alaska, August. The Chum salmon are spawning in a shallow creek. Thousands of them. Chum salmon are second in size only to Chinook (King) salmon. If you watch this video you will see several behaviours common to most animals that rut. (The term "rut"...
The World of the Beaver

New research on beaver have provided new insights on the beaver's role in the ecology of their habitat. As result a better understanding of the relationship between beavers and the aboriginal peoples of the plains historically has emerged. Its role in helping to mitigate the effects of climate change are also better understood. Much of this video was shot during the Covid lockdown when we were ...
Baltimore oriole nest

Each spring they arrive in our neighborhood. Their calls among the louder ones that greet the day mixing with the songs of cardinals and robins. The Baltimore oriole stands out in the forest. The male's bright orange body contrasts nicely with its black wings. The attraction is my neighbor's feeders. In addition to seeds and nuts they put out slices of fruit and this is what draws the orioles i...

A hawk was sitting on my 4’ chain link fence where I have a feeding station in the winter. Squirrel inched its way until it was sitting right underneath him. Squirrels are fearless. And I have so many that I would like to see a hawk grab a few. This looks like a young hawk so maybe not too much experience.

Juvenile Female Coopers Hawk "playing with" a squirrel, not hunting. If you've ever seen a Coopers in action you'll know what a hunting scene looks like. This was nothing more than practice.

This Cooper's Hawk has a totally different hunting strategy compared to other Cooper's Hawks, or even other Accipaters by that matter! Typically these birds follow a flight-approach. What they'll do is strike at a unexpected bird and chase it in flight! Its tough for any hawk to just run up to a squirrel, he's gotta swoop down from high on a tree and pounce on him. That's what a Red Tailed Hawk would do...but I know that's a completely different hawk! Juvenile hawks are curious about all types of prey. So when they learn what their strengths and weaknesses are, that makes them adaptable hunters!
