Came back here after watching Bud Of The White Rose! I’ve watched this version about three times now, and really enjoyed it for what it is. The White Rose version was amazing as well, following the anime by every detail but adding in their own things as well. So did 90’s version though, with their own lines and small tweaks to the story. Really love both versions, can’t wait to finish with the Black Rose Arc <3 (I stayed up way too late watching White Rose) I gotta say though, with no shade to the White Rose actor, I really love this version’s Touga--just her getting a whole flashy single number, dancing in heels the whole time, while wearing bright red lipstick. 90’s Touga was just so flamboyant, while White Rose Touga felt more stoic. Still, the guy did a good job as well. I also especially liked White Rose’s Nanami, Utena, Saionji, Juri and Wakaba. They’re all amazing singers!

it's the gear shift for me

While I do really enjoy this show for what it is--the singing and acting is brilliant, and the cast & crew did all they could with the resources they had to capture the spirit and story of the first arc--it really is lacking in some respects. In fairness, you'd probably need a full opera cycle to tell the story well with the requisite scope, scale, allusion and art direction; one 2.5D myu simply isn't enough to convey how sweepingly grand and tragic RGU is.

This is the first Utena media I ever encountered, years before I saw the anime or read the manga. Imagine my shock and confusion learning the full depth and dark context of the whole story. This stage show--understandably, for reasons of time, format, and real world constraints--leaves a lot out.

This is Claudio Moneta, one of the most well-known Italian voice actors! He ended up voicing, among other characters, Barney Stinson, Goku, Kakashi Hatake and Spongebob in their respective Italian dubs. At first I couldn't believe it was actually him 😮

Interestingly, the original bells are in the dubbed version even now. The dub never has had sound mix updated for the remastered version, so it still has the same sound effects that were in the original 1997 airing to my knowledge. Including the bells.
