I must go down to the seas again, the fever takes a hold,
Too long ashore, and the fear of getting old,
Aweigh again, the anchor stowed and the course is set,
The sea roving life is not over yet.

Here's my first sail in my Jeanneau Sun Fast 37. A sea trial really but could have taken me to Scotland had I not discovered two leaks that needed fixing. I will be back for round 2. Some music on three clips which are only clips themselves and I hope are considered fair use. Why A Yacht Sinks With Rudder Or Stern Damage

I look at two designs and see the consequences of hull damage at the stern caused by rudder or collision. I think of what can be done to reduce water flow to the boat interior so a bilge pump could manage. Comparing a Benetau and Jeanneau. I see how to strengthen the rudder tube fixing to minimise the chance of failure and water ingress.

Westerly Fulmar 500 mile solo round trip (Scilly Islands) for Oceanis 411 rig
Hi Mike, just came across your page and been watching your videos. I’m new to sailing, and have just completed my day skipper course. Next move for me is to buy a sail boat ready for next season. I presume from your videos that you buy and sell boats? Any recommendations for my first sail boat? Preferably something around 28ft. Enough room for 4 really, with wife and teenage boys. I’ve been looking at Sadlers and Westerleys due to their reputation for safety and seaworthiness, but happy for any advice you can give. Billy
Hello Billy, Go back over 10 years now with my videos and you will find quite a variety but was happy sailing all of them, 22ft Hurley to Jeanneau 37. I liked the Cobra 850, that's a 28footer, fin or bilge keel options and would accommodate you all at a pinch, headroom around 6ft. I am not a trader but have changed every year for some years now. I also liked the Westerly Fulmar, its 31ft but called 32. Mine was a twin keel and sailed very well. I'd say go for as big as budget allows so the family are not cramped. They all get you afloat and get you places.
Hi Mike Another great adventure up to Scotland. Enjoyed it very much. I didn’t realise Andrew had sailed in company with you heading north. He has been posting pictures and text on our North Wales Westerly Owners WhatsApp group this season since early in the year when he bought Narnia from down south. I liked the ‘me filming him filming me’ bit! I’ll watch your return home next! Thanks
I got a nudge from him as I was waiting for favourable wind that just wasn't happening, he'd set a date to go and I lwent along! We sailed in company till I went to Melfort and he Cuan Sound. His footage added something to the video, better than a drone!
Good luck with the sale Mike, nice boat and fast too.
Thanks Joe, As fast as the Sigma I had for sure.
Great video Mike, looks like you had a good trip back. Remind me to bring my Ukulele next time ! We have been avoiding 3 gales in the last week, at Tarbert, Gairloch and now Portree but hopefully the weather will improve next week for the small isles.
Good to hear you are still sailing around there. I hope the weather obliges. I saw a feature on Mullagrach, an island next to Tanera Mor, Summer Isles. If you want an island to yourselves, half a million and it's yours. I'd like to take my banjo and keyboard next time, make more effort.
Nice month away sailing Mike, thanks for sharing.
Thanks James, it's back to doing boat jobs now!
I had July on this boat but I have her for sale as I have another boat for next year's sailing. Anyone who liked 'Mad World', there's a nice cover by Chiara on RUclips. If you liked, please tap the thumbs up to bump up the video, and also encourages me to keep making them. Comments always welcome too.
Great video Mike. Wow! What a man of many talents! The musical out tro was something to behold!😂 Please keep your videos coming, I really enjoy seeing my old boating stomping ground of Anglesey at its best! Dave, of Prestatyn (currently land locked ☹️)
Thank you, I'll never be a good musician but don't mind having a go, it's good for when stuck on the boat with half a gale blowing and too rough to dinghy ashore. If you want a good boat... this one for sale now.
Cooper coat looks great. Did you use 2 times the cooper than your last boat? Thank you
I used the Coppercoat branded standard rather than my own. It's 2kg copper to 1litre epoxy if I remember correctly. They supply the maximum copper allowed by environmental regulations. I didn't abrade the surface as they recommend apart from the bits I did after where the cradle supports were. It will be interesting to see the difference after haul out.
@@mjcooke2sailingmostly Is the product cuprous oxide or copper oxide. Not sure if i can purchase in the USA. Thank you
@@redwood1957 I know Coppercoat have suppliers in USA as I recently watched Sailing Artha doing a boat in DR supplied from USA. Doing the Westerly Fulmar, I bought copper separately from a GRP supplier and added to Gelshield. It would be pure copper (Cu), not oxide. Don't confuse with products advertised on ebay for decorative use.
Nice to see your sailing journey onwards from Bangor.
Thank you, it was good to meet up again after quite some time since last meeting at Port Ellen.
Another enjoyable video from the MJCooke stable. You make sailing up to Scotland look like a stroll in the park Mike, for me it would be a major event.
I was sat on the boat on a mooring off Felinheli and waiting for a favourable wind to head north. I got a nudge from another north bound sailor who said he was going and we set off regardless of a NW wind which persisted so long. Life made easier by a very good autopilot and a capable boat. Glad you enjoyed it, more to come in the return trip out soon.
I have Havoc for sale now as the Bavaria is on her cradle at the boatyard. She sails as well as my old Sigma 36 and has great accommodation.
What is the price?
@@Krzysztof-h6z Take a look at the advert on Apollo Duck, lots of photos and information.
After all of your trials and tribulations, (what's a tribulation by the way), it's truly magnificent to see you finally have her in the water and making such a scenic journey. Well done! Look forward to more videos soon.
She's back outside the boatyard at the moment and up for sale as there's no space for her there. Good seein you recently and hearing your stories of a past life.
Really enjoy your videos mr Cooke. Please keep them coming. Loving the new boat 👍⛵️
Thank you, another one of the return trip soon and the ukulele gets a chance to 'entertain'. I have her for sale as the Bavaria has taken her cradle..
It was great fun sailing with you in company on Narnia up to Scotland. Looking forward to seeing the return video 👍
Your video viewsof my boat certainly improve my video, much better than a drone! I hope you get to the places you said and look forward to seeing some video.
Hi Mike, were you single handed on this trip? I'm wondering what a sunfast 37 is like to single hand ..
Yes, just me and myself. It's been said that 37ft is the optimun size of yacht, this one is over 11m so marina pricing may affect people's choices these days. Handling at sea is fine, I always find docking the most challenging, single handed. Setting things up in advance helps a lot. This boat sails very well for me with reefed main, and putting in the reef in anticipation while still anchored or on a mooring helps. I've done 9kn with reefed main on the approach to Ardfern in sheltered water. The Evolution 200 autopilot does the sailing at sea.
@@mjcooke2sailingmostly thank you for the quick response, very helpful.
I do hope you that don't mind me messaging you on your channel regarding an 'off topic' matte outside of your . My question is do you know someone who might skipper a boat from the South coast to Conwy with me. I don't know anyone personally or how much they would charge. Obviously a factor that I need to consider before deciding if I can buy the boat and get her to my home port. She is a Hunter Legend 38, well equipped and appears, subject to inspection and survey) ready for the trip. Myself and one other would be available to crew. I am asking because you seem trustworthy and more into the sailing fraternity than me ! Best regards, Simon.
Hi Simon, That sounds a good boat. I don't know of any boatless sailor who may help you. I'm away in the Western Isles sailing the Jeanneau (she's advertised for sale at the moment). I have to get back and work on other boats. I have the Bavaria 37 too and will have to sell that if I can't sell the Sun Fast.37, (I have only one cradle for two boats!).Respond to the Sun Fast ad on 'A Duck' website and contact me that way if I can help in any way.
@@mjcooke2sailingmostly Busy man, thank you for replying to my message x
@@mjcooke2sailingmostly Just to clarify, I wasn't been cheeky, I was just enquiring if you know of any paid 'delivery skippers' who might be looking for a job. Enjoy the Western Isles, hope you have a fab time xx
Hi Mike. The Sun Fast is looking great! What a shame though that you had the leaks and a pity you had to return and be hauled-out again to fix. Fair winds and better luck for the next passage. All the best
All sorted now Mark, new exhaust hose and prop shaft seal. Up around Oban now, been good but the rainy weather catching up now. Seen the Clipper race yachts. Hope you get some good sailing.
She is looking good, a few things to fix but lovely. Fair winds!
Thank you, You know how it is, fix things on a list then start a new list. I got away again and will put another video on here soon. Am keeping watch on yours too. All the best
Yes, I know how it is! I was meant to be heading towards the Atlantic by now, but hit by a storm, metal supports for the tiller cracked and Genoa destroyed! I have had to go back to a marina to fix things again!! Fair winds my friend.
I hope you get everything sorted and get to do what you plan.
Good to see you back out sailing and filming Mike 👍
Thanks James, I'm back in the boatyard trying to take the shaft coupling off so I can fit a new seal, struggling a bit. I bought a new exhaust pipe too. Will be off again soon and another video of course!
I sold my boat 2 weeks ago, she’s gone down to Pwllheli. Looking to buy something this winter. Roll on next season for me.
I will be advertising this one after my holiday.
Great video, Mike! She looks great on the water, too. Cychod, de? Trafferthion!
I've already got the hose and seal and a shaft anode I forgot to get. Soon be off again.
Great to see you back on the water, the SunFast looks similar to the yacht we were tacking across back up the Straits last Sunday afternoon ? Narnia is heading off to Scotland end of June for 8 weeks so hopefully see you up there 👍
I had no idea that was you. I saw a Westerly with a keen sailor tacking up against that wind and I thought he was thinking he was a lazy sod for motoring! Nearly two hours from Puffin to Menai Bridge near the islands. Well done to you. I got a shot of your boat at the beginning.
I'll be off again north asap. Hope I recognize your boat next time. If wind suits, will do a long leg to make up for lost time
@@mjcooke2sailingmostlyMy wife is a bit of sadist and loves tacking up the Straits with me doing all the rope work ! We had fun trying to keep ahead of you although Manda was worried she was going to hit you a couple of times !
I was doing around 1800 revs. I sped up eventually to get out of your way but concern over the seal and exhaust pipe kept me slowish. That distance should only take an hour motoring. You know the Straits better than me, I've done it in my old Invicta years ago with little choice and alternative being a Fare Gota petrol engine maybe 10hp. Draft on that one 4ft, the Jeanneau 2m 7cm. Circa 7ft.
Good to see your back in the water Mike, wel done super job, at least, ps i sold my boat now campering with my van, cheers happy sails keep looking for your storys best regards Reinier
Thanks, I shouldn't have expected everything to be 100 percent, I'll sort things and be away again soon. Hope you have some good van time.
Hi Mike, you got to have a little sail in her, she's looking good. It'll be all right on the night.
Just have to dig into the bank account and some work and will have another go. I was pleased over all, something like the Sigma 36.
Interesting channel, I was speaking to you a couple of weeks ago in Dinas boat yard, you certainly have your work cut out with the Bennetau and the Bavaria. Enjoyed the Sigma 36 videos aswell. Will keep watching
Thank you for finding the channel interesting, a good compliment that one! There is a lot to do with the 411, I'll be at it August September time after some more sailing. The Bavaria is not a project, just some overdue maintenance to do and bottom paint etc. I won't take big probjects any more, the 411 the last.
@@mjcooke2sailingmostly Might see you at Dinas then. Really envious of your trips, I sold my Bavaria a couple of years ago but really miss sailing. I did Costal Skipper in 2014 around the Menai Straits and Puffin Island, really beautifull area.
Nice to hear from you, great trip/video xx
Thank you Simon.
Diolch Mike! A superb video. It brought back a lot of happy memories of the Solent. Well done on a fine passage.
I like landing in a place and calling it home even for a few days. Just a brief stay of near a week I can now say I exported a VW Golf to IOW. That's the advantage of a yacht in that it will provide a home, as mobile as the crew want to make it. Glad you found it bringing back memories.
Sailing my Sun Fast 37 soon, there will be a video. Please stick with me, subscription is free, I don't ask anyone for money only their time to watch. This channel is not about me but the boats I sail and places I visit so I am behind the camera most of the time. Please come back and watch later if you don't find time now. The video gives an overall impression of a complete voyage, good and worse conditions.
Hi Mike, I enjoyed that! Wishing I was out doing some sailing. Eirwen is up for sale, so looks like we’ll miss this season, fingers crossed for something bigger next season. Keep the videos coming!
Thanks James, Westerlys are popular and ought to find a new owner easily enough, maybe you might find a new boat towards end of season and get some sailing in bringing it back from somewhere.
It was a long trip but it was great to see 👍If you pass our way let us know Mike and we will put the kettle on.
It may be next year for the Bavaria but I plan to come north soon in the Sun Fast, after owning two and a half years, it's time to spread her black wings.
Very good, she looks tidy! Similar layout to your Oceanis? You could really hear the authelm squeaking and complaining from the first day, hope it is an easy fix! She looks good overall though, a tidy up and scrape of the growth and a new bimini and that's about sll she needs? Oh and a wash of the sails!
It's already had a bottom clean and looks tidy now. I took the headsail off, it had started deteriorating where the uv strip ends up the leach, probably better for me to find another sail. Maybe someone out there has a spare to sell, suit a Furlex 4 (or 5?)mm luff tape. Interior not much different to the 411 saloon. Good beam.
Thanks Mike, that was brilliant. I brought my Malo 38 from Lymington to Plymouth and it was lovely to see you do it. All the best. James
Glad you found it good viewing. That sounds a good boat to sail in. Plenty of good harbours down west. I like Plymouth, Fowey. Some others I've not been to yet.
Nice trip 👍 better weather than mine ! I set off from Poole on the 20th March and it took me 4 weeks dodging the gales. Every day was a strong wind warning but we went to similar places. Narnia is now back in the Straits, hopefully see you about or up in the Western Isles. I’m setting off in July for a leisurely 5 week cruise up to Orkney. Fair winds.
Fair enough weather, four day wait in Newlyn. I commented on your comment on another channel but it didn't get to you. A few weeks made a big difference then. It was still cold at night for me. There was a heater but I never used. I hope you got some video footage. It would be good to find you up north, I would like to get off soon in the Sun Fast.
Indefatigable ! 😄
Thank you J. I just saw your aerial Red Wharf 'Prisoner' scene.
Bonjour Mike. Sut mae. Another season - another boat - or so it seems!! As always thanks for filming your adventures & taking us along with you. And thanks for catching sight of a yacht I have always lusted after - the Oysterman 22 sailing out of St.Maws. I chartered one years ago. Had everything you needed in 22 feet of bullet-proof GRP &, of course, just looked right sat comfortably in a Cornish landscape. It's also lovely to see Porthdinllaen from the sea & the magic of Pen LLyn in the distance. My mother was a native of Abersoch but she wouldn't recognise it today, more's the pity. Thanks again for the adventure, old memories a dipyn bach o hiraeth!! Hwyl a flag. Rej
Yes, it always feels good to get back north, too many boats in the Solent although not so many April time. Falmouth certainly has a collection of gaff sailed boats. I seemed to have anchored close to a string of pots, that fishing boat came so close, they must find good fishing in the mooring area. They were fishing cuttle just off Newlyn, maybe these the same. Diolch am rhoi y geiriau.
Hello Mike so your at again! no keeping a good sailor down. Good to watch a local sailing the high seas - nice one.
Off soon in the Sun Fast, can't wait. Hope you liked the video.
I enjoyed that. Thanks for posting
Met Sadler 34 owner in Newlyn, 3rd boat down in the video waiting for weather to carry on up north. Hope you get a good sailing season.
I don’t like the traveller there ever thought of the German mainsheet?, and as you’ve sailed everything what do you think of Rivals🦑
I have a stalled Rival 32 project, It's nearly 30 years now. I did so much work on it I had to get other boats so I could sail. I did sail it engineless from the boatyard around to my little harbour about 15ml but that's all in all that time. I think they are a good bet if you have one in mind. They also have the mainsheet track across the main companion. I made a fibreglass sprayhood and when running, the mainsheet would foul the side of the hood so I will have some arrangement of transferring to the coamings on a run. All the best.
If you liked the video, you may like to see the return trip titled 'December delivery 180 miles solo Wales to Scotland Sadler 32'. I have lots of videos made sailing many different boats, just click on 'videos' on my channel. I like to get comments.
Hi Mike - it was a crazy time of year to be making that journey, but well done. You must have been freezing though...
Hello, Beverley and Gaynor, it was a rare bit of settled weather and I waited a month for it, it wasn't cold on the way, the day after got cold with a cold NE wind. Some good sailing for the middle bit. I found video work this time of year limiting with all the dark hours. Happy New Year and happy sailing 2024.
@@mjcooke2sailingmostly- it was a great passage 👍 And Happy New Year to you too
Great video of the Bay. Are Halmatics as strong as they look?
Thanks for your support and I'm glad you like the video. The Halmatic is an ideal small ocean/offshore cruiser with it's long keel and in the case of the one in this video, a rudder hung trim tab self steering, an Autosteer. They cut through the waves when beating into the seas you saw around Finnisterre. A modern design would have had a hard time there. Crossing outside the Bay in Fitzroy area mostly, she only had a handful of breaking wave tops thudding against the coachroof and rode the big swells and waves very well. They measure 29ft 6in, so will not break the bank with marina charges. They would suit single or double handed cruising.
A very peaceful adventure. Even though a DNA test show Scotland and Wales I am more at home in the San Diego Bay. Howard
It's a bonus to get out there this time of year, it's not ideal for video work with the long hours of darkness but I hope this gave an impression of that. I see lots of similarities in the two nations, some words in the languages are similar, (also to the old Cornish language and Breton). I like it when I sail around the British coast and find accent changing by the next port of call. Thanks for showing support, It's always nice to get a comment.
Hi Mike. Great to see you sailing instead of covered in Dust. That looks like a great trip although I would have been tempted to have a little sleep at IOM. Tarbert is a nice place isn't it.
Hello Stefan, The way the weather has been, the opportunities between all those named storms meant if I stopped, I could have been stuck somewhere. In the summer, on a cruise, that's all part of the holiday but I was being an opportunist and making a dash for it. I'm at Dinas this pm to pressure wash the boats, the green stuff is growing. All the best for Christmzs and peace for 2024.
@@mjcooke2sailingmostly Of course Mike. It was a comment on my energy levels rather than your passage planning. Have a good Christmas. I may see you at PD!
Thanks for posting. I made that trip on a friends boat in F6 and was as sick as a parrot. We stopped at IoM in the end. I'll never forget sea-sick pills again!
Thank you Alistair, I gave up a previous planned Scottish cruise at Port Erin in the Sigma 36 I had previously. (Sigma 36 Gone Sailing). I was relying on a forecasted SW wind which never materialised and didn't want to beat up through the north channel against a north westerly.
Great video and nice to hear from you x
Thank you Simon, hope you have a Happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year.
Good to see you sailing again Mike. Looking forward to seeing again next year.
Thank you Joe, it was a bonus trip for me, turned out well after waiting for the right weather. A nice place to visit. Yes, may be a while till the next unless the boat shopaholic in me spots something, ha ha. Have a great Happy Christmas and peace for the New Year.
@@mjcooke2sailingmostly same to you Mike.
What a cracking trip, good weather for it too. Just shows there is still plenty of good sailing even at this time of year!
Hello Robin, I waited a month for a long enough break in weather, the middle of the trip was 'green' on Windy, the rest 'blue' so meant a lot of motorsailing. I got over 12hours of sailing though. Going to a new harbour for me a pleasure too. Doing video of the trip very limiting though with 16hrs darkness.
@@mjcooke2sailingmostly better that Windy turns out a bit too "blue" than a bit too "red"! Should be up at Dinas soon, bought a new ladder and some Lithium batteries! Planning on a lot of re-wiring this winter. There is a LOT of bizarre extra wiring on our boat. I'm planning on losing a lot of it. Need to fix the Webasto too!
@@itsverygreen532 It's bad here at the moment, Storm something. The Webasto will be handy!
Hi Mike. Really enjoyed your journey. One reason I don't sail in the winter is poor circulation in my hands and feet which get too cold, so I'm envious that you did this in December. We absolutely love going to Tarbert and were lucky enough to be there during the annual seafood festival last year. Looks like you had better weather than us though as the wind and rain never stopped for days! Looking forward to your next adventure in the new year. All the best! Mark
I was impressed with Tarbert and the harbour and marina. I'm sure it gets very busy in the season. It's so sheltered. I wonder if I'll get to have another visit, there's so many places to discover. I suppose it will be some months now before more sailing. I'd done a clip of inside the boat with the heater, it was comfortably warm, seems I missed including it in editing.
Thank you skipper! All the best
Thanks for your support, glad you liked it.
