Buying a Boat at a Boat Show? Don't

We know this may sound counter-intuitive, but buying a boat at a boat show is not a good idea. Boat shows are a great place to view and get to know the different boat builders, but they don't give a sense of the real-world experience and are more akin to a home and garden show. So instead, we encourage you to visit the boat yard before making such an important purchase. Having said that, we loo...

    If you look at the AWA on the B&G gauges in the video, the best is 60 degrees. To weather is a traditional weak area for cats. What the ARC data shows is that if wind is consistently a beam and aft, you should buy a Lagoon, a cruising Trimaran (Neel 47) is possibly a better choice than a moderate Performance catamaran (Outremer 51), and it will take approx. 6-8 days on average. The other take away is LWL is, as always the best indicator of speed. After that it's likely crew experience, and after that comfort. None of those boats are hard core performance boats like a Gunboat or ORC, and the comfort will be relative. The real decision on comfort is, can you reduce the number of days at sea, without compromising your comfort and safety? And that would take a test to weather. The ARC rally is within all catamarans 'easy' zone. To weather would sort the data better. With respect to light weight, all things being equal, light doesn't mean weak. Does more wood cabinetry make the boat stronger? Point taken on seaworthy boats you have confidence in. Being able to sail in light airs should also be comfortable, but the boat must be sturdy enough to take on heavy weather, and that's where weight will be a determining factor in comfort.

    Excellent build quality! -- QUESTION --- We just watched this weeks episode of Parlay Revival and saw the horrible deck joint failure on that Lagoon. A factory installed line block connected to the bow deck, pulled apart the deck from the hull and lifted a three foot section clean back. This happened in only 12 knots of wind and exposed the front hull to the ocean. Turns out it was lightly glued to the hull and in several sections they had failed to apply any glue at all. Total nightmare. How does Privilege connect the deck to the hull and are they aware of the importance of keeping that joint completely attached and water proof? Parlay could have sunk had they been in an Ocean crossing. This Lagoon Cat needs to have the entire deck completely removed and reattached properly (if that is even possible).

    • @PrivilegeCatamaransAmerica
      @PrivilegeCatamaransAmerica 5 месяцев назад

      Hi Coleen, if you've watched any of our production videos you'll see that we don't glue and screw bulkheads, they are fully glassed. This is also true for the deck and hull joint - they are glassed in and become a 'holistic' structure. It would be virtually impossible to take the deck off a Privilege in any wind conditions,

    • @Coleen_West
      @Coleen_West 5 месяцев назад

      @@PrivilegeCatamaransAmerica ..I thought so but wanted to check after watching this weeks Parlay Revival video. Their Lagoon actually had the deck peel back, at least three feet, only to discover it was glued (very poorly glued) and a few rusty screws . Such a sad builder I must say. Really sad actually. They clearly don't care.

    Really nice looking I must say! -- QUESTION -- I know that buildinrs have it down to a science, but how many layers of fiberglass is on each side of that foam? Is it one? On the carbon structures, is it one layer of carbon fiber per side of foam? For the paranoid among us, can we order it with more layers??

    • @PrivilegeCatamaransAmerica
      @PrivilegeCatamaransAmerica 6 месяцев назад

      Great question and your paranoia is born out. The very thing that differentiates one yacht builder from another is rarely the thing people take any notice of at a boat show. The FRP layup methodology is critical to a well built vessel and is much more complicated than how many layers of fabric are used. We have included discussions on this subject in some of our earlier videos. Again great question.

    • @Coleen_West
      @Coleen_West 6 месяцев назад

      @@PrivilegeCatamaransAmerica ...must say that the bulkheads look so nice compared to Lagoon's. Maybe I shouldn't admit this, but in my experience things that look good tend to be good. We are all taught not to think that way but rarely are neat, good looking construction methods actually bad construction methods. It is possible but I have yet to find such an example. When I saw how Lagoon put their boats together, with all that ugly adhesive gunk and very little fiberglass tabbing, I knew that it was a bad job. Your Catamaran construction looks amazing. Still not sure how many layers are on it but I am confident that there are enough.

    I hope to see more solar and even hybrid engines on your new models. I am seeing that 1 diesel hybrid and 1 electric motor with enough battery can save you a lot on fuel and costs of upkeep. It will be nice when solar and batteries progress more. New technology has LFP tech at 350 watts per kilo now. Old LI tech gets 300 but is fire hazard and most LI out their only gets 250 per kilo. Over the next 2 years we will see 400 watts per kilo with LFP batteries. being able to put 100kw of batteries on a 50 foot catamaran is huge. right now that is 80kw for same weight. Have you looked into solar on main boom bags. could add 1kw per side maybe even 2kw.

    Just some thoughts....We like both models but don't understand why you'd have a flybridge, without decent roof and weather protection. Similarly for the 750, its halfway there, where is the rest? Besides that both models are small (not wide) in comparison with the competition, taking away from the living space and making the boat less stable. Those large aft cockpits seem really nice in e.g. Frence Riviera weather, but in the tropics, one wants space in the saloon with air-conditioned, sitting outside is the exception, why not make the saloon live able instead?

      Can't think of a big cat meant to sail off-shore that has a full hardtop flybridge. Which maker(s) were you thinking of ? I love that Privilege are built different, especially the pontoon galley & central primary cabin/suite. Sleeping in a pontoon sucks, noise-wise. That saloon is appropriate for the number of cabins/beds, ie an owner & guests, not a party boat. I'd probably shrink or lose that bar altogether, though, so the lounging area could be bigger, I'll give you that for sure. Plenty of top-heavy multi-storey beach chalet on extra wide pontoons type cats that creak and rattle in the slightest of conditions on the water & sail like drunk whales because of all the high weight & extra beam. I've been on them as a charter guest. There are plenty of makers, catering to charter, who build their boats for short term guests who want constant A/C & protection from the sun.If you live somewhere that swampy, sure, get more chilled space & deal with the fuel cost. Bet you could spec that boat with a canvas bimini or sail shade on the flybridge, though, if it's just sun protection you need.

Privilege are legit bluewater live-aboards & rock solid because they put their weight into structure & keep it low. I think Sunreef are highly over-rated, anyway.
