Hi John, Hope you are doing well. I've got an old house in the suburbs of Philly, it is still very similarly constructed. I watched your videos before I did work on my winder stairs. Would love to see more of your videos! Take Care.

I notice it was coming off in pieces. Is there a way to take it apart to restore it & place it back together? Or would the wood be too old & broken down? The wood on what im working on isn't in rough shape like that, But it was all nailed together i kind of want to take it apart sand it all down & add screws instead of nails. Especially for the railing. But the old wood is way more seasoned & hardy than what we got today, so i'd to keep it as long as i can rather than replace it with some cheap baby wood.

Yes, in England, most people would repair this rather than ripping it all out wastefully, meaning you lose the historic character.

Came across this video as I’m looking at my 100 year old Philly row home stairs separating from the wall-only difference is-my wall has a buddy to lean on-the house next to me is still standing and my steps have the same if not worse gaps..why would it separate so much!?

I don’t think those are chisel marks on the back of that riser. I think they would have use an axe - seen them in my Victorian house on floorboards

Hi mate. Good stuff. Regarding the risers, can you use pine timber? Is it strong enough? And some companies selling treads and risers are selling Oak engineered with MDF. What do you think about MDF for risers? Cheers mate.

Love your skillset and appreciation for old carpentry. Doing a similar project to a south philly row home in removing carpet from stairs and second floor stairway landing. Looks just like this 3rd floor effort but I have banister and balusters in place. What I'm not clear about is what is best way to handle the stairway landing where you show in video of removed balusters edge. I'm installing red oak over the subfloor pine and not sure should I notch back the spots for the balusters or take flooring to edge with a nose and then drill circle hole as you did treads to install balusters back. May I ask how did you do this 3rd floor section flooring, balusters and railing ? Thanks.
