It is not advisable to merge the pumice pieces because they will be needed to craft the Tin Armor, to get an extra pumice piece and a pumice just defeat the most difficult boss in the game Ozma, he is found in Chocobo's Air Garden. I hope I helped!

More interestingly, hades was the original final boss. You can even see it in some concept art for the final arena. It was changed to necron fairly late in development, which is why necron is just shows up abruptly. But they decided to keep hades as a secret boss, which is why he doesn't even have an overworld character

To be honest the two pumice piece are more valuable as equippable items than getting the Ark summon. He also has "Save the queen" sword. But no one in the party can use it as it's the weapon that Beatrix uses.

It's too bad this logic does not carry over to every RPG Games. I tried to do that in another game, and it healed the undead 😂
