How to recognize an instructor: Low Forehead and Mean Little Eyes. Don’t worry, I’m one myself. And I did train in a Link Trainer myself in the beginning of the eighties. About 20 hrs toward my IFR rating. Was the end of an era: never saw one of them in actual use again, Only in museums How flightsimulators have evolved in the intervening years!!,
Thank you so much for placing that elegant memorial for posterity. I placed a small plaque and planted a tree for, Pilot Officer, Jean Noizet and also a plaque at the Farm for, Sgt Pilot, Stanley Paul Lister.. . So important not to forget all the sacrifices and our heritage.
I was there last wednesday , nothing much to be seen , i missed the memorial , spitfires regularly fly nearby , they take a passenger and fly from biggin hill and along the seven sisters and past beachy head.
I was at Hornchurch Airfield today for our Men's Mental Health Walk. A fitting day, being the 84th Anniversary of Operation Dynamo, which 54 Squadron Hornchurch was involved with. I am ex RAF and my weekly bus trip in for the walks, transport me to all the RAF camps I served at in my 14 years, when entering the Married Quarters patches off Wood Lane and Dowding Road. So wonderful to have this time loop of a place for this old veteran.
Thank you. I have only just discovered Matching Green and it’s former RAF station , RAF Matching.
I've just realised our house in Kingaby Gardens was originally on RAF land, and close to a runway. I remember the 123 bus used to terminate near the entrance, and recall the barrage balloons going up in the late 50s/early 60s, and that great concrete dome.. My dad occasionally would mention the Good Intent pub, although I was too young to go there..
I was stationed at RAF Hornchurch, There were Spitfires and Mosketoes flying from there.
I’ve been there.
My son and I were in the area and walked about the edge of the airfield near the Shenly side . We tried to get around to the other side but the new housing development on the old Hangers hospital site did not really provide access to the field. Very happy to see this airfield recognized. The Brits do right by their history.
Fantastic work to all involved. Thank you for caring about these RAF airfields that played such a crucial role in WWII and to all who served on them.
Try spelling Coltishall correctly in the video titling! (x 2)
Now corrected. It was right on the video.
Sad day when Colt closed, the people were amazing. Best camp I served at.
I was stationed at lossie on 202 SAR choppers in the 70's and went gliding with the Fulmar RAFGSA. The Air Training Corps were gliding on the other side of the runway from us. I was there when Prince Andrew did his gliding solo's and where you are standing was where an ambulance was parked while he was flying. I did my Bronze and Silver 'C' gliding certificated from Milltown and I remember the move to Kinloss very well. We had to tow an old yellow Bedford bus over there in the middle of the night to Kinloss. We used the air traffic control tower at Milltown as our club house and bar. The hangar housed RAFGSA and ATC gliders plus winches and an odd ball assortment of vehicles. It was also home to a yellow Auster, G-ARLO used as a glider tug. When Milltown ceased flying the RAF lads went to Kinloss and the civvys of the Highland Gliding Club went to Dalachy. I remember a few 'longest day' BBQs at Milltown where we flew from dawn to dusk at midsummer. Happy days.
Where are the marker stones made?
A fabulous memory of this incredible day .
An excellent video of our opening ceremony, many thanks for posting Kenneth..
As the grand nephew of an airman who trained and died at RAF Ossington, thank you for the marker. Would appreciate if there was more coverage and recognition of airmen who died in training accidents as many of them have been swept under the rug.
Hi, great video I’m doing some research on RAF wing is there many buildings still there? Such a shame they’re just knocked down.
There are some, see the pictures by Richard Flagg and try and make contact with Nick Ellins
I live and work on the farm around the airfield and there are still many buildings hidden away. little gems of history
We're the air raid shelter located
Great info! I taught my sister to drive there in the early 1970's. Is the airfield open for visiting or does it now revert back to private land? Last time I was there (about 10 years back) it had an illegal camp thereon. As a matter of interest, the old control tower then had a brand new electricity board- any idea why?
Cool video. Just found out my uncle was there in WW2 in a Lancaster. NF909 PM-J. I will be building his aircraft. RAF 103 SQN. Thank you for making this video.
SUPERB , Was on the airfield this very day , didn't know of this plinths existence otherwise I would have visited. as I wandered past the remaining structures I pondered on what stories they would tell if they could...……..Lest We Forget
My father, George Cross, flew from Little Snoring with 23 Squadron as a Navigator. On the 30th September, 1944 at the end of his and Jock's 'Intruder' mission they were shot down. You can listen to him recounting what happened next: vimeo.com/90426843

Great video. Thanks! Just like to say though that our group is AVIATION RESEARCH Group Orkney & Shetland Not `AIRFIELD RECOVERY` Group.
Hottest day since the Great Summer of 1976, and the first time the RAFA Standard Bearer had ever paraded in shirt sleeve order!
It was a lovely dedication and service.
