    Wow! Glad you made it through. The low visibility, the disappearing car, the closeness to the damage track, this is some of the most underrated tornado footage I've seen in awhile. On a related note, do you allow this footage (or portions thereof) to be used, and if so, under what terms?

    • @chrisnovy3448
      @chrisnovy3448 2 месяца назад

      If the footage is being used for training or educational purposes you are free to use it. If it is going to be used for a TV show I generally license its use on a per-show basis/per-series basis. In other words, if you are doing "Dumbest Places to Park Your Car" you could use the footage for a single episode or multiple episodes. If later, you decided it use it for a completely different production I would want to relicense it. I also have a clip that shows multiple angles and has audio from the cabin recorder. It gives a better idea of when I reached my "Oh sh*t, I screwed up" moment. ruclips.net/video/nl8WEJwXdDM/видео.html

      @@chrisnovy3448 Hi, thanks for responding so quickly. I foresee one, possibly two usages of the footage (i.e. usage in two videos). My first choice would be to monetize it, but given that you're already offering permission for non-commercial educational/training use, along with the fact that most of my videos are non-monetized and also based on the typical views I get, I don't imagine likely making back enough money to license for commercial purposes, so I would be happy to use it even once for non-profit use. It's a great piece of footage regardless and I'm grateful for your openness. Let me know if I've understood your terms properly :) I'd be interested to know what they are for the additional footage or what that footage looks like!

      Thanks. It was a whole lot of fun that day --until it suddenly wasn't. The biggest lesson learned --besides just stay home and watch it on radar-- is if you lose site of a tornado (which I had a good track on moments before) exercise your escape plan immediately. Don't wait around hoping you'll regain sight of it again. In my case by the time I realized what was happening my visibility had dropped to zero and I was effectively pinned down.

      The vehicle was totaled but fortunately it didn't roll over since I was on the periphery of the intense circulation. It's amazing how little distance there is between survivable winds and the killer, winds. I lost situational awareness here because I was concentrating on too many other things and I missed the radar cues that the storm had changed direction. By the time I knew I was in trouble visibility had dropped to zero and I was forced to ride it out where I had parked. Since my mental picture of this situation was incorrect --I thought the tornado was well west of me moving NE when it fact it had made a hard right turn and was headed straight to me-- I wasn't afraid but rather I was confused about what was happening. Had I known what was actually going on I probably would have required a change of pants! My lesson learned from this event was if you lose sight of the tornado --in this case it became rain-wrapped, huge, and changed direction-- immediately exercise your escape option(s) and get out of there. If you stay put and keep hoping to eventually see the tornado you might find yourself 5000 feet up in the air heading quickly back toward the ground or trapped inside a vehicle that's rolled over and over until it's the size of a mini fridge.

      After the windows blew out I guess it was just like being in a car wash --only with the windows rolled down while driving 120 MPH! Unfortunately this car wash didn't cost $3 but instead it totaled the vehicle and sucked some expensive night vision equipment out of the back seat --never to be seen again. Still, I got off lucky. The folks you see at about 0:27 were killed seconds later. They were attempting to check on the family horses ahead of the well-warned tornado. Unfortunately the tornado was rain-wrapped so they never perceived the "wall of water" ahead as being a violent EF-5 tornado and they drove directly into it. Their vehicle ended up looking like something that pops out of a car crusher at a salvage yard. :-(

    I don't see a tornado in your video, just straight-line wind and heavy rain. It looks like you were in RFD, not a tornado.

    • @skiptalbot
      @skiptalbot 5 лет назад

      You can't see the forest for the trees, like you can't see the Earth is a sphere while standing on it. From inside a large tornado, the tornado's winds are indistinguishable from RFD. Indeed the RFD at some point *becomes the tornado*. The wind direction clearly shifts through the course of the video. He's no doubt inside circulating winds of tornado intensity, not inside a simple blast of straight line outflow.

    • @davidsul7052
      @davidsul7052 5 лет назад

      @@skiptalbot I can see he's in the side winds it first, but that gives way to RFD afterward Either way you can see that he's briefly in hurricane-force winds but the tornado itself missed him

    • @davidsul7052
      @davidsul7052 5 лет назад

      @@skiptalbot I might add too, that the video isn't very good or clear. Looks like Go-PRO video. The video itself doesn't show anything that you could say is a tornado. It's only a few-minute burst of very heavy rain and hurricane-force wind. That's all you see. What you can see is a very low cloud base in front of a blinding rain shaft with hurricane-force winds and blowing spray from the ground which briefly obscures visibility. The wind is blowing toward the camera and changes angle a little from the left to right. This occurs with microbursts and RFD. The event looks like a very heavy rain shaft with a hurricane-force microburst. That's all the video shows. Since I wasn't there at that event, I can't say there wasn't a rain-wrapped tornado involved in that event. And microbursts, RFD and tornadoes often occur in conjunction with each other.

    • @skiptalbot
      @skiptalbot 5 лет назад

      @@davidsul7052 Just to put this to bed, the NWS conducted damage survey shows this location within the tornado's track. Please see: www.weather.gov/oun/events-20110524-tornado-b2 He's not in the most intense core flow of the EF5, and straight line RFD does indeed follow a tornado's passage. The winds depicted in this video are pretty obviously tornadic though. I can tell you that just from experience, but I don't have to if tornado damage is being surveyed at the same spot.
