    put a wine or beer bottle in the top and it will 1) water your plants for longer 2) give you a visual water level, letting you know when to refill from far away, and 3) go longer in between waterings making it lower maintenance :)

    Looks great Sam. They’re so pretty. Perfect time for planting. I wouldn’t be able to help myself though, I’d be painting the palings in a dark grey and while I had the paintbrush out I’d be painting the side of your neighbours cream block shed in grey too.😅❤

    This is exactly what I hope to do with my aging and very crooked concrete porch. I noticed that you had the lowest weatherboards removed. I was going to simply butt the edge of the decking against the weatherboard. would you recommend that I take off the lowest boards? I have recently had the house restumped after probably 100 years (!) and so the sides of the house are lower than the middle. I was thinking that i could manage the variance with the height of the joists - making them slightly taller than the middle. Any thoughts on the approach?

    • @TheEberharts
      @TheEberharts 15 дней назад

      Hi 😊 that approach seems fairly reasonable! You can certainly adjust the overall heights to suit a particular low point, so long as it's very gradual. Taking the lower board off makes it easier to install the joist and last board to the home, much neater! I hope it works out well!

    I've really come to despise using acrylic paints on exterior timber, they just can not cope with seasonal expansion and will crack within a few years. And when they do, you're in for a right pain to strip it back and make a good job of it again. Microporous paints like Bedec MSP get a lot of love in the trades, or if you have the climate for it to cure you could even consider traditional linseed oil paints which are easily overcoatable for maintenance.

    The wood is so much better looking than concrete so good decision to go with that. And that is beautiful wood. For the step down transition until you get the lights like you mentioned (although they might not help in the daylight) is to add a door mat there. Would trigger the eye that there's something different there. My sister has that problem inside her house where a porch addition was enclosed. I saw someone almost fall because he didn't realize it was a step down. She did add a small rug so now it's obvious.

    Hi what did you use to replace the rotted out bearer? What timber size

    • @ArmstrongSons
      @ArmstrongSons 3 месяца назад

      It all depends on the size of the bearers in your home, avoid using any pine timber for the subfloor, ideally the best timber for strength and pest prevention is LVL, if your bearers look about the same size as the ones in this video, the closest size timber you’ll find is 90x45

    • @TheEberharts
      @TheEberharts 2 месяца назад

      It's best to use a similar species and size to the rest of the home, makes it easier to level out when replacing. Otherwise always consult a timber span table for loads and spaces between stumps. Typically you'll find old hardwood bearers on the 90x60mm mark, or laminate 2x90x35 kdhw together to make 90x70's.
