Whenever this song starts playing when I listen to unknown pleasures my world just shifts. I can’t stop listening to joy division lately as a musician I feel continuous inspiration and life feels like it has meaning again because I understand the the music and why it’s being made. I think as a musician we go through phases of what inspires us or what we see meaning in. I’ll listen to one artist for months weeks or years and nothing else. First it was John frusciante, and beefheart, Bowie, syd barrett, Beatles aphex twin whatever. It’s always shifting and I’m always finding something inside of music. creating music that I enjoy as much as I do listening to records. Right now Joy division is where it’s at. When I listen to unknown pleasures it takes me to a specific place in my mind, like another dimension where I can walk around, or be vicariously seeing through the individual band members imagination or visual world of the instruments being played as a player. I see the story of the words like movies in my mind that are relatable. Some music is made as a money making machine for a radio hit. Other music is made from a passion and from a love for music and starts from a place within the artist completely regardless of an expectation of the outside world or an audience. The moment you stop caring about that then that’s what real music is.
